kyle maclachlan — who plays Dr. OrsonHodge on Desperate Housewives — was rst introduced toGoldstein’s work at Sheryl Crow’s house. “I liked his atten-tion to detail and his aesthetic,” he says. It was tting that six

months later, Kyle, an avid gardener, ran into Jon at RollingGreens, a avorite local garden boutique. When Jon rstwalked through Kyle’s garden, the backyard was shrink-ing due to an invasive grove o bamboo, and there was anannoying pile o lava rock never used in the landscape. Kylementioned to Jon that the pool had been leaking or years, and upon urther investigation, Jon realized that the origi-nal installation was not done properly. Instead o completelyrebuilding, Jon resuraced the pool, incorporated the lavarock, and created a waterall spilling into it. Kyle next hiredJon to design a retaining wall to keep back the bamboo. Thewall was built using repurposed Topanga stone rom anotherpart o the garden. Jon’s next phase was to construct a guestapartment in the garden. Jon relocated climbing wisteria androses growing in the area where the apartment now sits tothe ront garden. These plant migrants t in perectly withKyle’s collection, which includes heirloom climbing rosesand David Austin English roses, such as Crown PrincessMargareta™, among others.

bryan cranston, Emmy award-winning staro Breaking Bad , has a house that’s a traditional Colonial,a bit o a departure rom what you’d expect to nd in thisupscale Los Angeles suburb. Bryan hired Jon because o his

design approach: Match the garden to the house. “I think thegarden should be an extension o the house as ar as designis concerned,” says Bryan. When Jon rst arrived at theCranston garden, there were drainage problems andimproper pairings o plants with conficting water needs. With water usage being a huge concern, Jon grouped plantsappropriately. Shady areas now contain hydrangeas and aza-leas, and the sunny beds hold Mexican marigold (Tageteslemmonii) and lavender. Jon regraded the entire ront gar-den to improve drainage.

In a tour o the garden, Cranston highlights its distinctareas, or rooms. A path through the entry gate leads to aormal English courtyard dened by Texas privet hedges.A passageway through the tall hedge leads to a tranquilroom with a hammock suspended beneath Chinese wis-teria as a custom stone ountain trickles nearby. The areabehind the house is or entertaining guests, and has a repit and dining area. On the other side o the house, anopen lawn is used or “goong o,” as Cranston puts it.see sOuRCeBOOK fOR MORe infORMaTiOn, paGe 76

Snapdragons, oxgloves and delphiniums line the path leading to the ront door, giving a pop o color.
