Electronic Intelligence (ELINT)

• Covert gathering of information from electronic signals that do not contain speech or text (COMINT)

• Main goal of ELINT is to facilitate actions which will preserve the use of the electromagnetic spectrum for allies,

while denying its use to the enemy

• In contrast to RW or ESM systems, ELINT is aimed at long-term strategic planning, even (especially) during

peacetime

• ELINT Systems typically have automated elements, but also involve operator-in-the-loop analysis

• Information collected through ELINT can contribute to:

• Targeting and mission planning

• Optimization of both defensive and offensive military actions

• Operational intelligence

• Construction and maintenance of threat libraries and databases

• Driving the design and operation of ED/EA systems (RW, ESM, etc)

• Processing of time-overlapping pulses in different bands

• Extraction of advanced parameters (inter-pulse and intra-pulse modulation, emitter-specific fingerprinting, etc)

• Facilitates post-processing and recording

• Flexibility and reconfigurability

Constraints:

• Demanding sampling and processing requirements

• High-speed networking and storage requirements

• Early data reduction is critical
