.Calvary Church Council August Meeting Highlights
Upcoming Fall 40 Days Under Construction
Since we will be "under construction" this fall and in celebration of the 500
th anniversary of
Reformation (an ongoing "renovation" project of the church), our annual fall 40 Days Spiritual Growth Journey this year will be called 40 Days Under Construction. Materials are currently being developed by Pastor Jonathan and Debbie Heierman.
Council Book Study
Council is reading and studying for the remainder of 2017 the book Missional Renaissance by Reggie McNeal. Beginning in 2018, council will be reading and discussing Growing Young by Powell, Mulder & Griffin.
Council celebrated the eight Baptisms from the previous Sunday.
July 17th council minutes were reviewed and affirmed with update to date.
Diane Biggs reviewed July 2017 Treasurer’s Report. July was a strong giving month with $14,000 more income than July 2016, both months with 5 Sundays. Council affirmed the current spending plan and approved moving forward as planned.
2017-2018 Goals and Priorities were reviewed
Rise Up Synod Campaign to grow resources, leaders and healthy congregations for our Southeast Michigan Synod.
Council affirmed a motion to participate in the Rise Up Campaign as part of our next congregational capital campaign. We affirmed committing from the funds raised, $50,000 to Rise Up and $25,000 for global partners (likely the Mbulu Diocese in Tanzania).
ELCA Hurricane Relief Lutheran Disaster Response is helping
victims from recent hurricanes in Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, Texas,
Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, & Cuba
This season has seen some of the worst hurricanes on record, and there may be more to come.
As a church, we’re standing by our neighbors who have been affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria and Hurricane Harvey, and we are ready to assist in additional locations as disaster strikes. The road to recovery is long, and Lutheran Disaster Response will be there to accompany those affected in every phase.
Your gifts will be used entirely (100 percent) for direct response. Together, we can help provide immediate and long-lasting support for those whose homes have been devastated or who have been otherwise affected by hurricanes. Give now to support survivors of disasters in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other locations impacted by powerful hurricanes.
Other ways to give:
By mail - make checks payable to Lutheran Disaster Response. Write “Hurricane Response” on your check’s memo line and send to Evangelical Lutheran Church in America PO Box 1809, Merrifield, VA 22116-8009
By phone - call 800.638.3522 to make a donation with a credit card. Operators are ready to assist you Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm Central Time.

I want to share with you this month an article I wrote for the Clarkston News in early October. Being "Under Construction" is such a good time to share with others the great things God is up to at Calvary and to invite others into the construction process.
(Clarkston News, Oct 4, 2017)
If you have driven by our Clarkston Campus on Bluegrass Drive recently, you have probably noticed that our church is under construction. We are delighted to be expanding our family ministry space for children and youth ministry, as well as our fellowship space to accommodate even more community, fitness and recovery events. This is certainly an exciting time for us at Calvary Lutheran!
However, in a recent message I shared these words: "The facility, the building, is the least important thing under construction this fall. The expanded facility is only a tool for the real construction project - you and me - us together, as God's people - people of LOVE who are always growing and sharing and seeking new ways to serve our community and our world."
I know that I sure am "under construction," always seeking to grow and become more and more the person God has made and called me to be. I am a work in progress and still have a long ways to grow to fully live out the characteristics of a Christian (the fruit of the Spirit) as noted in Galatians 5: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."
As the old bumper sticker says: "Be patient, God isn't through with me yet." Of course, this is not an excuse to be a jerk or not try, but it is a reminder that we are all, by God's grace and this side of heaven, works in progress. God invites us daily to "come as we really are...and become more."
I believe all of us are "under construction" in one way or another. A walk of faith involves trusting God and opening ourselves to be transformed more and more into the likeness of Jesus living in
and through us. This is a construction project that will take a lifetime.
The construction process, of course, does not just happen by itself. It involves having a vision for the project, developing resources and blueprints, preparing the foundation, the actual construction, and then living in the new space with a new way of doing things. We would be foolish to enter into a construction project expecting things to stay the same or that it will be painless.
And construction can be a messy process that seldom goes exactly as planned. There are always some surprises and difficult decisions along the way. It can be hard in the midst of things to see how the finished project could possibly emerge from the seeming chaos - unless, of course, you are the architect or builder.
That's Good News for us as God's people. God is the architect and the builder of our lives and our church. This means that even when things don't go as planned or our lives fall apart or we make some big mistakes along the way, God looks past the chaos and sees a child of God "under construction." God will use even our pain and hurts to help us grow into the person he has designed us to be.
I read recently, that Ruth Graham, the wife of evangelist Billy Graham, has on her tombstone a Chinese character, because she came from a family of missionaries, that means "righteousness," and these words, "End of construction - thank you for your patience" That sure sums up a life well lived.
Paul writes in Philippians 4: "I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ."
May you be blessed and faithful on the lifetime journey of becoming all that God has made you to be!

I am putting this month’s HOPE CHALLENGE front and center. It was inspired and grows from a passage that was shared in our opening weekend of our Annual 40Days Spiritual Growth Journey: Under Construction. Hebrews 3:4 and 6 reads: “For every house
has a builder, but the one who built everything is God…[And] Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our HOPE in Christ” (NLT).
We are God’s house, good people. This is why we are centering our current growth focus on building. As things change around here from the outside in, we look forward to some sharing of how you’re building, changing, growing, and expanding from the INSIDE OUT. As things become more disrupted around here, I commit to you that I will be courageous and remain confident in our HOPE in Christ as I too grow from the inside out and continue to connect with each of you.
Twice a year, we focus on the church leaving the building through Community Impact Weekend. During our construction, know that your pastors will increasingly be leaving the building, engaging with you right where you are in mind, body and spirit. So if you don’t see me around, take courage, be confident and remain in hope. I’m probably right around the corner constructing what God has called and gifted me to do: build relationships.
Want to join me in building HOPE? This is a great time to connect on Facebook Kate Kathy Penzien Zywicki, Instagram katezywicki, cell/text 248.318.9098, email kzywick [email protected], or good old fashioned snail mail at 6805 Bluegrass Drive, Clarkston 48346. There’s lots of ways to build but only ONE BUILDER!
Anchored in HOPE, Pastor Kate
October 14th 8am Breakfast
& Meeting
As I look outside, I notice a tree that has lost 80% of its leaves. If you’re like me, you’ve been anxiously awaiting the cooler weather and all the wonderful fall festivities. However, have you had to do a double take recently and come to grips with this odd weather we’ve been experiencing?
Some of us believe it really is fall. But something seems out of place in the world! Come to think of it, I’m feeling like quite a bit is out of place in the world. Sure people are on many sides of all the issues facing the world. Everyone seems to be in a rush to compartmentalize one another into a constantly changing landscape of human existence along race, gender, culture, economic, political, entertainment, religion, and so much more.
Why do we try to do this to one another? It seems to me that this type of societal separatism leaves love on the sidelines. Really, what group claims love as the very focus of their identity?
Recently, as part of my seminary approval process, I’ve had to review one of my sermons, one which I have actually delivered. The one I chose was one I shared out of love to and for the Calvary community, one group I feel claims love as a major component of their identity.
“Relationship and community grow by attraction more than promotion. In communion, community with one another and God we are completely attracted to each other in the love of Jesus Christ. We support one another because of the hope found in God’s gift of grace in the promise of our own resurrection. There are no tombs in heaven only rooms. And you and I have one waiting for us and it is filled with all good. A holy life is a life lived in love of Christ and loving one another. A life given completely to this kind of love and community helps us get through any fear. A life lived loving God, loving one another, and loving ourselves enough to become UnAfraid…”
It is through relationships explored in Scripture that help us live with more hope, courage and faith. John wrote…Jesus says to each of us…“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Thank you for sharing your love with me.

Intern Pastor Ken Awarded ELCA
Leadership Scholarship!
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Fund for Leaders helps ensure that those who are called to serve our congregations have the opportunity and resources needed to pursue a path that leads to passionate and effective leadership. The Fund supports more than 200 students at our eight ELCA seminaries. The realities and possibilities of the 21st-century demand astute and creative leaders who can effectively point the way for both individual congregations and for the church as a whole.
The ELCA Fund for Leaders, a merit-based scholarship program, is designed to attract and support women and men of tremendous promise to become pastors and rostered lay leaders in the ELCA.
Intern Pastor Ken Greble applied for this scholarship last spring. At the Awards Banquet in Chicago on September 26-27, he received a significant award. Over 250 church leaders gathered to celebrate with over 45 new recipients. Pastor Ken was awarded a scholarship for his last year of seminary studies as he focuses on becoming a Mission Developer/Redeveloper.
This is an excerpt from Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton’s award letter: “Kenneth your varied experiences and passions are well suited for you to be prepared to serve as a future mission developer or re-developer equipped to deepen and extend this church’s commitment to form and reform communities of faith. The ELCA needs bold and courageous leaders like you to proclaim the gospel and God’s mission…may you experience God’s extravagant love in Jesus and may that experience inspire you to share that abundant love promised by Jesus with others.”
Ken shared: “This is very exciting and may not have happened if I hadn’t been at Calvary and able to experience the outreach and vision of mission that
our congregation holds as one of its top focuses of the Spiritual Growth Pathway. I am thankful to all the people at Calvary that have ‘made room’ for me at the ministry table over a year ago. What God creates, we have the gift of being able to care for and this is my desire for the rest of my life. There will always be a need to speak of Jesus Christ to people and I pray that you and I never shy away from going into the world with confidence and doing just that! God is good-all the time!”
White Lake Community Garden
Put down that skinny, no whip pumpkin skinny latte and pick up your trowel! The calendar may say “Fall” but a number of plants in the garden have clearly NOT read the memo. The eggplants, beans, cabbage, kale, and squash are in their own, very productive world and seem intent on helping move way past the 5,000 pound mark this season.
Why not join them (and their keepers, Ben, Bruce and the Micah 6 team) for one hour and help them work toward their goal?
Harvest and maintenance times are: Monday and Wednesday at 5pm and Saturday at 9am at our White Lake Campus.

Pontiac Community Orchards
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. We agree and have given you just a snapshot because it would take much more than a thousand words to express the joy and sense of the Holy Spirit at work through Calvary and its mission outreach in Pontiac. It will continue to grow and there will be many more photos and chances for you to be involved in the album God is creating in this place.
Please join us on October 21st from 1-3 pm and
become a part of the neighborhood’s story. There will be music, crafts, food and you which should make for lot’s of fun! We will be giving neighborhood children recorders and music books! How awesome is that?
Take steps with us alongside our family and friends to facilitate and encourage our neighbors in Pontiac through fruit, books, laughter, and even some tears.

Pastor Jonathan & the people of Calvary:
I would like to sincerely thank you for supporting our work in the community. Your support makes it possible for us to offer even more help to many elderly and disabled people who turn to us for help. Many of our neighbors live on very small incomes, thus we offer our services at no charge. Because we do not charge for our services, kind gifts such as yours are absolutely crucial if we are to continue our work.
In our 25 years, IVC has been able to serve over 3,300 people in need through a committed corps of over 4,500 volunteers! You have helped to make it possible for others in need to remain in their own homes - the place where they are the happiest, where they can feel independent and maintain their self-esteem. Most Sincerely, Karyn Dombrowski Curro, Executive Director, Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers
Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers - IVC In 1992, IVC began as a small initiative to bring together congregations and community groups with the objective of helping our older and disabled neighbors remain safely in their own homes for as long as possible. Direct services to clients began in Deecember of 1992, with our first group of eight trained and caring volunteers. Within a few years, we had grown so rapidly that we began to work beyond our original borders in the southernmost part of Macomb County. And by 2000, we had expanded our service area to cover all of Macomb. Hundreds of volunteers kept coming to us each year, allowins us to serve hundreds of frail, isolated and struggling neighbors.
In 2010, after a few years of getting more and more calls for help from Oakland County residents, our Board made the deliberate decision to expand service provision into Oakland County. We called together an Advisory Group of many community and congregation leaders and within a year had launched service provision into limited parts of Oakland. Today we are still reaching into new areas of Oakland County, as well as providing services to a handful of residents of St. Clair County. Pastor Jonathan serves on IVC’s Board of Directors.
IVC’s Mission Drawing from religious, business, civic and individual resources, the IVC team works to meet 2 mutually entwined and equally important purposes:
to respond to the ever-growing needs of older and physically challenged adults living in our communities who struggle daily to maintain their independence at home.
while providing meaningful opportunities for volunteers of all ages and abilities to enrich their lives and live out their faith by helping others.
To achieve this mission, the program matches volunteers of all ages, faiths, backgrounds, and talents with older and physically challenged adults who need assistance with basic support services such as: friendly visits and supportive telephone calls, transportation for appointments and errands, housekeeping and meal preparation, home repairs and maintenance, indoor and outdoor chores, respite for family caregivers, and a variety of other services that help older adults remain safely and securely in their own homes.
Quick Facts about IVC
Each year our corps of over 700 volunteers assist over 600 older and disabled adults.
Last year alone, over 225 volunteer drivers logged over 115,000 miles transporting people to essential appointments and errands.
It costs IVC less than $500 per year to help a person stay in their home, compared to $5,000 per month for nursing home care.
Less than 12% of our total budget is spent on administration and fundraising.
With the average cost of nursing home care running over $90,000 per year, it could cost our community $54,000,000 in Medicaid costs every year if the 600 people we serve annually could no longer stay in their homes.
Calvary partners with IVC for training and organization of our Caring Companion Ministry.

November 4-5, 2017, Calvary will again serve all over Oakland County as part of the Clarkston/Davisburg Community Impact Weekend. We will be extending God’s love by serving our seniors, low income families, the homeless, the hungry, and other non-profit organizations. Our planning team is busy putting projects together, but if you know of a good project (that, hopefully, also comes with a great leader), please let us know.
Saturday, November 4, 10am-2pm
Sunday, November 5 – Clarkston worship times are 8:15 and 9:30 only and then we leave to serve. Childcare for small children will be provided at Calvary’s Clarkston Campus on Sunday only.
Current list of Confirmed Projects:
We are still accepting projects, so there’s definitely more to come! Staff Contact: Deborah Robitaille
Better Together! This is an amazing opportunity for each of us to reach people that may never walk through the doors of our church. There are plenty of ways to get involved: volunteer, join the planning team, include your community group, etc. We truly hope you will take part in this spirit building event.

Embracing the Work of Caregiving
Since my youth, O God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come. Psalm 71: 17-18
When it works properly, care giving can be a great blessing. It is a blessing, not only because it teaches us the humility necessary to look at ourselves honestly, but can also teach us about the grace of true, unconditional love. These spiritual lessons can be hard to learn in a materialistic, self-focused society that seeks to protect us from much of life’s messiness.
It may sound odd, but in order to get the full blessing of care giving, the caregiver must depend on the one receiving care. In a very real sense, we depend on those who depend on us. For if the older person is unwilling to receive our care, we get locked into a battle that can win no territory. Our lives can be changed by care giving, but it depends on an older person doing his or her part. That part, very simply, is being weak enough and willing enough to receive our care. This results in an inter-dependence which can bring personal and spiritual growth to both caregiver and care receiver.
This “power of the powerless” does not mean that the older person must become passive and weak in all areas. Part of the job of aging well is to recognize the difference between what one is able to do and what is needed from a caregiver. Successful aging doesn’t mean running a marathon at age eighty; it is refusing to give up and become helpless. Show me an older person who’s had a hip replacement and bad eyesight, but who still walks out to the mailbox every day and uses a magnifying glass to read, and I’ll show you a person who is aging successfully. An older person must be willing to do what he is still able to do, even with modifications to the task, but must also be willing to accept care when the task can no longer be performed independently.
Finally, the wisdom of his or her years should result in the older person singing the praises and truth of God:
An older parent may be weak and extremely needy, but when he or she sings the praises of God, family members and friends practically compete with one another to have the opportunity to be the caregiver! On the other hand, when the older person is mired in complaining, fault-finding and the “poor me” syndrome, family members will stay away in droves. This is a simple truth, but it’s one that has a huge impact on care giving.
We all treasure moments of rest, relaxation, and leisure pursuits, and certainly God wants us to find time to think, reflect, and be renewed. However, we sometimes see rest and relaxation as our right - signs of “the good life” that is owed to us. The Bible reveals just the opposite: life is not an end in itself, but a means by which we learn, most often through relationships and challenges. The Bible suggests it is in the angst of life that the real story will be told of who we are and who God is. In our time, the task of caring amid the vast busy-ness of our lives puts us on the anvil, where God sharpens us and reshapes us so we can become more and more like him. It also allows us to teach and model care giving to the next generation, with both its blessings and challenges.
