Gearing Up Gearing Up Agricultural Safety Training for Youth Making a Difference

Your role as an instructor for the

Gearing Up For Safety program

is a serious one that will bring with it

significant responsibilities. What you

teach, or don’t teach, can have a big

impact on future skills, behaviors,

and attitudes of the youth you are

teaching. At the completion of the

“Gearing Up” training, some of the

youth in your class, those ages 14

and 15, will be eligible to be certified

for employment operating tractors

and some hazardous machinery. Your valuable instruction will

contribute towards reducing the

potential for injury as these young

people begin work.

This CD-ROM is designed to provide an instructor with the necessary tools for organiz-ing and conducting a production agriculture safety training program for youth to meet the current training requirements under the law. The material covers both tractor and machinery opera-tion, as well as safety information on ATVs and skid-steer load-ers.

This program, adminis-tered through the Coop-erative Extension Service (4-H) and agricultural edu-cation training programs na-tionwide, meets the current safety training regulations pre-scribed under the Agricultural Hazardous Occupations Order (AgHOs). A glossary, containing hundreds of technical terms each with a color image and brief description, allows quick access to definitions of new or unfamiliar terms. Also included on the CD are all of the necessary evaluation tools to assess each stu-dent’s: knowledge of the curriculum materials, ability to perform a pre-operational safety in-spection, and ability to safely operate a tractor through a standardized obstacle course.

The 11 Units

1. General Safety Overview 2. Tractor Basics 3. Pre-Operational Procedures 4. Basic Tractor Operation 5. Tractor-Powered Implements 6. Other Self-Propelled Equipment 7. Operating on Public Roads 8. General Maintenance & Repair 9. ATV/Utility Vehicle Safety
