Dear Geauga County Friends and Neighbors,

Summer is here and the beautiful Geauga County Parks continue to provide great opportunities to enjoy the long-awaited warmer weather among the natural wonders of Geauga County, while protecting, conserving, and preserving our natural resources for future generations.Spend an afternoon birdwatching at Frohring Meadows in Bainbridge Township, where a 100 acre prairie and up to 3.5 miles of walking trails through the woodlands await your visit. At Claridon Woodlands Park, active residents of all ages can enjoy the challenges of the Ropes Course, Climbing Wall, and BMX bicycle course, which are easily accessible from the current bike trail; and kayaking is available at Headwaters Park in Middlefi eld.You know my opinion about our amazing Geauga County Parks, but take a look at what just a few of the many Geauga County residents who visit the Parks are saying:“The Wildfl ower Tea and Walk program was excellent! The park presenter was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, funny, and very patient with all the participants questions. Five stars to all the park personnel involved with the program! One of the very best that I have attended.” - Tea & Wildfl owers“I'm very grateful to the park staff who patiently answered my questions many times over. I had never been to Aff elder House and was nervous about holding a family party there given that we have some special needs and the weather forecast was for rain and cold. The staff could not have been more courteous and more accommodating. Everyone was delighted with our day.” - The West Woods, Aff elder House“John and Linda did a fantastic job of helping us identify birds. Their enthusiasm and thoughtfulness for our well being is greatly appreciated. I also want to point out that John is a very careful and safe driver. Because of John and Linda, everyone enjoyed themselves the entire day. I can’t thank them enough!” - Magee Marsh Birding Van TripJoin the fun – come and enjoy your Geauga Parks this summer. Hope to see you there!

Respectfully,

Quite often while working in our parks, I ponder what these areas were like for the

Native Americans as they first roamed Ohio’s landscape. Very few of Ohio’s natural habitats are

what they once were long ago. Luckily though, Nature is resilient, and it is the goal of many

natural resource professionals to try to “restore” damaged habitats.

Ecological restoration is an attempt to jumpstart or accelerate the recovery of an ecosystem’s

health, integrity and sustainability. While change is always (and will forever be) a part of Nature,

the rate of change now occurring in our natural world is very concerning. Excessive human

development and our recent influences (pollution, invasive species introductions, etc.) have greatly

accelerated changes to Ohio’s landscape (as compared to much slower, more naturally

occurring changes). These hastened changes have long-lasting effects that dramatically alter our

native plants and wildlife. Thus, there is a huge need for parks to serve as both present and future

places of refuge and recovery.

It is nearly impossible to return our land to pre-settlement or pristine conditions, but it is possible to restore our parks to a more healthy relationship

between humans and the land. This means working on managing lands that can adapt to

future changes while sustaining important natural ecosystem functions for native wildlife.

A good way to start is by preserving and restoring large blocks of natural land, wetlands and streams

while looking for ways to “connect” them to one another. As future changes occur, it will be more

and more important to have large connected corridors of natural areas where plants and

animals can freely migrate and move, ensuring species have the option to adapt or cope.

Back in the summer of 2010, Orchard Hills Park in Chester Township was Geauga Park District’s first attempt (and the region’s, for that matter) at the large restoration of a former golf course. We planted trees, restored streams, enhanced wetlands and planted native meadows. Restoration is a long-term endeavor, though, and after more than 10 years, the work continues this fall with a $72,000 grant for more reforestation funded through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and the U.S. Forest Service. Be on the lookout for more native trees!

In recent years, Geauga Park District has also partnered with organizations such as the Chagrin River Watershed Partners, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and the Ohio EPA on habitat restoration work. Finished this spring, the Griswold Creek restoration project within Bessie Benner Metzenbaum Park (funded in part by a $260,765 Ohio EPA grant) improves the water quality of this watershed on a daily basis.

Exciting upcoming restoration projects include the restoration of Veteran’s Legacy Woods, formerly Wicked Woods Golf Course, and the restoration of critical wetlands along the Beaver Creek tributary to Bass Lake Preserve (utilizing $845,340 from the Ohio EPA’s Water Resource Restoration Sponsorship Program). Some others are in the works, as well.

What can you do to help restore wildlife habitat here in Geauga County and ensure that it remains here for our children to enjoy? It’s not as hard as you may think to make a difference. Mow your grass less or, better yet, convert some of that turf-grass, which is almost worthless to wildlife, into native meadow. Try to use less fertilizer and herbicide. Plant more native trees, shrubs and flowers. And let some of your own backyard become a home for wildlife.

Together we can build a more healthy relationship between humans, wildlife and the land. We are all connected to and sustained by Nature.

If you have never been to Observatory Park, make it a destination this summer! Our calendar is chock full of excuses to come out, including free movie nights under the stars, a Perseid Meteor Shower camp-out and regularly scheduled planetarium shows. Find details about how we're commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing on page 18. Or just come casually for a stroll or hike along six trails totaling nearly four miles, some with great interpretive features on the planets, weather, henge stones and Great Pyramid of Giza cornerstones.

These 1,100 acres also play an important role in the local ecosystem, protecting some headwaters of the Cuyahoga River. Rare and endangered species of plants and animals can be found here, making it an important Nature conservancy. Also, perhaps most famously, Observatory Park is a Silver Tier International Dark Sky Park, designated for its protection of the dark skies over Geauga County. Why are dark skies important for wildlife? Come to the park this season to find out!

Additional site features include the Oberle Observatory and its telescope, the Robert McCullough Science Center and its planetarium, and the Nassau Astronomical Station, opened in 2017. For these, building open hours are found on page 3.

Thank You to All of Our

GenerousDonors

Donations to Geauga Park District

February through April 2019

Geauga Park District is thrilled to announce its involvement in the brand new Geauga Skywatchers Club, an astronomy club founded by a consortium of organizations interested in promoting scientific thinking to the young and young-at-heart through the study and practice of astronomy.

Through this club, telescopes will be available for check-out from local public libraries, and monthly meetings at local libraries and Observatory Park begin in September. Activities will be designed for grades 6 through 12, but interested adults are also

welcome to participate. Many local experts and their sophisticated equipment are on board to help teach the wonders of the universe while honing skills in mathematics, engineering, optics, observing, reason and critical thinking, to help bright minds shine with the light of new knowledge, and inspire the next generation of working scientists by “Looking Up!”

The Geauga Skywatchers will even recognize accomplishments with an optional system of advancement. Keep a look-out on our website under News & Updates for more details coming soon!

From the Desk of THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

www.geaugaparkdistrict.org • PARKEXPLORER 15

This year we celebrated another great accomplishment in opening our 25th park to the residents of Geauga County. This recent success was achieved with the addition of our newest park, Holbrook Hollows, which adds another unique lodge for you to reserve for family gatherings.

Much like the recent lodge built in Claridon Woodlands, Holbrook Hollows' lodge is unique in its design, creating a one-of-a-kind experience. This park also has a Nature-based/themed playground, a paved walking trail, and more than 2 ½ miles of trails, boardwalks and bridges for you to enjoy on a visit.

We also hope you can get out this season to our two newest offerings: Veterans Legacy Woods and Russell Uplands Preserve. We are proud to make these parks accessible to our residents, and both are already open for your walking exploration.

Our hope is to build upon this year’s successes in years to come, further improving access to Geauga County's natural wonders. As always, I hope you will often visit our website, www.geaugaparkdistrict.org, to learn about our plans for future park improvements.

This year we will also celebrate our accomplishments in another special way. Our staff recently helped me put together a presentation, entitled "Geauga Parks for You," that celebrates Geauga Park District's many

successes throughout the past 20 years. It celebrates our accomplishments, outlines our roles and responsibilities, and shares our vision for your Geauga parks.

Geauga County is a special place to live. You, our residents are special. It is an honor to serve you, and we are proud to celebrate the role Geauga Park District plays in making you and your county a great place to live.

Please join me in this celebration by attending one of these four Meet the Director presentations, all at 7 p.m. Thank you for your continued support. Enjoy your parks!

“When was the moon landing?” It might be the most common question I’m asked by Observatory Park visitors. And when asked, it’s always spoken of as if it were a single event: the one and only moon landing.

To many 21st century moon watchers, it’s a shock to hear that there was more than one landing. In fact, there were six manned moon landings, one unsuccessful attempt, and a slew of astounding practice missions

and dress rehearsals. It’s understandable. Roughly two-thirds of all Americans alive today weren’t alive when the first moon landing took place on July 20, 1969. In the ensuing half-century, our collective memory of the tremendous, decades-long and planet-spanning effort to send humans to our moon has collapsed to a one-off visit by three astronauts.

The truth, however, is far more fascinating. As returning astronaut Michael Collins remarked, “All you see is the three of us, but beneath the surface are thousands and thousands of others.” That’s why we’re devoting the month of July to commemorating the history of humanity’s first efforts to visit our moon.

Find out more about this magnificent undertaking at the Apollo to the Moon program Fridays, July 12 and 26, at 7 PM at Observatory Park. This summer will also be a great time to attend a full moon program, night sky viewing through park telescopes, planetarium show or night out with Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society. Look for purple astronomy program listings on pages 8 through 13 for details.

What makes an arthropod What makes an arthropod an insect?an insect? All insects All insects have three body parts (head, thorax and abdomen), six jointed legs and two antennae. Their exoskeletons contain

sense organs for light, sound, temperature, wind, pressure and smell. Insects are cold-blooded and do not have lungs,

but many can fly and have compound eyes. Did you know that there are almost a million different species of insect?

A cinquain (pronounced “sin-cane”) is a simple form of poetry that follows a formula and doesn't have to rhyme. It was created about 100 years ago by American poet Adelaide Crapsey. You can write one about any subject, but we know that Nature can be especially inspiring. Here's how you do it...

What's bugging you?What's bugging you?What's bugging you?

Many of us use the words bug and insect interchangably. But entomologistsentomologists (insect scientists) call a particular order, or grouping,

of insects “true bugs.” This order includes stink bugs, cicadas, aphids and leaf-hoppers. What sets “true bugs” apart from other insects are

their sucking mouth parts. There are about 30 different insect orders; each photo below represents a different one!

What about these? Are these insects?

Insect examples

Let’s start with the term ARTHROPOD!

An arthropod is any animal with a hard exoskeleton that has

joints and paired jointed legs. Arthropod examples include

insects, spiders, crustaceans and thousand-leggers.

Can you fi nd the “true bug”?

These critters are all arthropods, but none are insects. Spiders are arachnidsarachnids, which have two body parts and eight legs. Ticks and scorpions also fall into this category. Pill bugs (real name Armadillidium), with 14 legs, are neither bug nor insect! They are crustaceanscrustaceans, similar to crayfish and shrimp. Then there are millipedes and centipedes, which are myriapodsmyriapods. Millipedes have four legs per body segment (so a millipede with 20 body segments has 80 legs!), and centipedes have two legs per body segment.
