Coping With the AgingProcessSenior Adult Assessment Program CanEnhance the Lives of Older Adults

Helping an older adult with activities of daily livingcan be a difficult task, but identifying their specific needscan be equally challenging. When an older adultexperiences such safety concerns as medicationmanagement, frequent falls, difficulty driving, memory lossand decreased ability in managing activities of daily living, they become a candidate for a senior adult assessment

A comprehensive senior adult assessmentprogram can be found at University Hospitals GeaugaMedical Center. The multi-disciplinary evaluation can be avaluable assistance for an older adult and an indispensabletool for family members, physicians, and agencies workingwith the individual.

The Senior Adult Assessment multi-disciplinaryteam provides a physical examination that includes athorough history and physical examination, a geriatricpsychiatrist evaluates the patient for cognitive issuesincluding memory loss and depression, a frequent problemamong older adults. A pharmacist reviews medications andassesses for compliance, adverse reactions and cost. Aphysical therapist assesses the person‚s functional mobilityand balance. A social worker/coordinator facilitatesreferrals to the appropriate community agencies. Anoccupational therapist completes an

in-home assess to determine functional abilities and safetyin their own environment.

As the assessment concludes, the patient, theirfamily, their physician, and the referring agency areprovided with detailed recommendations.Recommendations often include preventive measures thatcan improve the person‚s quality of life. A follow up/familymeeting, at which time each recommendation is reviewedand discussed. The social work coordinator helps thepatient and family implement the recommendations. Thepatient continues to follow up with their primary carephysician.

Fortunately, there are many resources available toolder adults and their families through social serviceagencies, home care, assisted living facilities, and long-term care options. Legal assistance and other communityagencies can be utilized to allow the patient to remain asindependent and safe as possible.

Sally Bell, executive director of the Geauga CountyDepartment on Aging, is one of the program‚s advocates.“Geauga County senior citizens and their families needaccurate, comprehensive information about their health toassist them in making wise choices about their future,” Bellsaid. “The Senior Adult Assessment Program provides thesenior and their loved ones with just that type ofinformation.”

Most are covered under the older adult‚sinsurance plan, including Medicare, Medicaid, and privateinsurance companies. Some senior adult assessmentprograms have fees for their services.

Arthritis and AgingAs we age, we often find ourselves having greater difficulty performing certain tasks.Simple things such as buttoning a shirt, tying shoes, or typing may become more painfulthan before. Fortunately, there are plenty of steps seniors can take to diminish theeffects of joint pain.

Although there are multiple types of arthritis, they all have several symptoms incommon. Swelling, progressive joint stiffness, and pain are the main indicators on theonset of arthritis, while other symptoms include chills or a fever during normal activities. The types of arthritis are Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Infectious Arthritis.

The primary action that can be taken to lessen the severity of arthritis is exercise, or anactivity involving consistent movement, such as knitting or playing an instrument.Regular joint movement helps to prevent stiffness. If the arthritis has progressed beyondthe point of being able to be personally managed, rehabilitation and pain managementare also options. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle may also be effective, as a healthyweight will make for less work for stiff joints, particularly in the lower body.
