What is Geek Pride?

Introduction

• Collective of geeks from across the region

• Unite as a walking entry to partake in the Manchester Pride Parade

• Founded in 2012 to honour Alan Turing and celebrate his achievements

• Now act as an annual legacy event to recognise both his LGBT and “geek” identity

What is a “geek”?

• Anyone who simply has a passion for something, probably quite niche

• You could be a classic sci-fi geek or maybe a bike geek or a sports geek. Perhaps you just love technology or participating in cosplay

• Anything goes! !

• Usually, we're a bit outside the mainstream but that's what makes us interesting

What is Manchester Pride?

• Manchester Pride is the largest event in Manchester city’s calendar

• Continually attracts a crowd of over 200,000 people throughout the City Centre

• Since 2003, Manchester Pride has raised over £1million for charity

• Has been distributed to hundreds of LGBT and HIV groups and charities and benefited a wide range of diverse projects

What is the Parade?

• The Pride Parade is a free event that goes through the centre of Manchester

• Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate in Geek Pride

• You don’t need a ticket for Manchester Pride to partake in the Parade

Theme

How will our entry look?

• However we want it to look!

• Important to create a visual identity and tell people who we are

!

• Co-ordinated costumes – they may be simply the same colour T-shirts !

• Establish a theme or identity !

• Evenly spaced walking !

• Use of banner, props or routines

What can’t we do?

• No confetti cannons / hand out literature !

• No alcohol to be consumed before or during !

• Flags, props or banners must NOT be waved over the Metrolink crossover points !

• Young children in the Parade must be supervised at all times !

• Once the Parade is moving, NO ONE must leave until the end of the parade !

• No nudity, simulated sex or demonstrating lewd behaviour !

• No fire, fireworks and animals !

• No racist, sexist, ageist or homophobia material
