Introduction:
Pragjyotish College was established on 1st September 1954, seven years after independence. It is a symbol of aspirations for the common people of Assam, searing to build a new nation. Pandit Tirthanath Sarma, eminent scholar, took charge as the founder Principal of Pragjyotish College. From its modest inception as an Arts College, Pragjyotish College has now developed into a notable institution of higher education in this region.. It is a full premier fledged UG College in Arts, Science and Commerce. The College has three post graduate departments; Assamese, Tourism Management and Economics. It is situated on the bank of Bharalu, a rivulet. It is one kilometer from the mighty Brahmaputra. The presence of two beautiful ponds at the entrance of the college campus reflects a serene atmosphere of the college. The college always gives priority to student’s qualitative performance and overall development by providing various facilities and special attention to girl students. The authority tries to maintain and observe gender equality. The college has a Girls’ Hostel to accommodate girl students from different corners of the region. The Girls’ Hostel of the college takes all kind of safety measurements. The NCC unit for girls concentrates in developing their character and qualities like comradeship, discipline, leadership, secular outlook and spirit of adventure. Lectures by eminent personalities and workshops are held to develop their personalities. ‘Anti Ragging Committee’ and ‘Internal Complaints Committee’ and Women Study Centre organize lectures to make the girls aware of problems and solutions regarding their health, and talks on laws and by laws, so that they are informed of their privileges and duties. In the field of cultural activities and sports, girls of the college have achieved grand success. They have not only achieved names for themselves but also for the college.
