Established in 1981, the National Council for Therapeutic RecreationCertification (NCTRC) is a non-profit, international organization dedicatedto professional excellence for the protection of consumers through thecertification of recreational therapists.
Professional recognition is granted by NCTRC to individuals who applyand meet established standards for certification, including education,experience, and continuing professional development. The CertifiedTherapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential is offered to qualifiedindividuals based on these stringent requirements.
NCTRC supports quality human service and healthcare standards andmaintains recognition by the Joint Commission, the Commission forAccreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and AccreditationCanada. NCTRC provides credential verification services to employersand healthcare agencies. These services are strongly encouraged byNCTRC to monitor personnel adherence to the standards of the CertifiedTherapeutic Recreation Specialist.
NCTRC is a charter member organization of the Institute for CredentialingExcellence (ICE). NCTRC is accredited by the National Commission forCertifying Agencies (NCCA).

Recreational therapy, also known as therapeutic recreation, is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individualswith illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being.
The purpose of the RT process is to improve or maintain physical,cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual functioning in order tofacilitate full participation in life.
What is Recreational Therapy?
A Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist® (CTRS) is the mostqualified professional to provide recreational therapy services.Highly skilled and professionally trained, the CTRS often servesas a member of the healthcare treatment team in concert withother healthcare professionals. The CTRS has acquired a specificbody of knowledge that includes theoretical constructs, appliedmethodology, and practice that spans a wide range of disablingconditions and illnesses.
The CTRS is professionally trained to apply a critical set ofcompetencies and skills to address the total person and the life factors that may be associated with a specific disability orillness – significantly contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of patient care and service outcomes.
