Introduction
● The Internet is often referred to as a “thing”: it is often treated as existing in the real world.
● Cyberspace –where is it? It is a place that resides essentially in our own minds but when connected and communicating through networks of computers we assume people are thinking the same thing –cyberspace!
● Who or what is on the other end? A man? A women? An artificial intelligence designed to entertain us? Technically, we don't really know.

Literature Review
● Using a questionnaire in Malaysia, Sam, Othman, and Nordan (2005) investigated anxiety levels, attitudes and self-efficacy of the Internet for 81 female and 67 male undergraduate respondents – the researchers found no significant differences.
● In Taiwan, Tsai and Lin (2004) studied responses of 636 high school students using a questionnaire and found differences between males and females perception and attitudes toward the Internet.

Literature Review Continued
● Punyanut-Carter and Hemby (2006) studied male and female differences in their e-mail behavior –their findings included noting specific differences in female behavior that included higher use of emoticons and email preferences. The researchers used a questionnaire to gather data. Also, in a related study (2006), the same researchers also uncovered differences in regard to self-disclosure that indicated females had a higher sense of disclosure awareness and honesty. Females were also found to communicate more personal information than males.

Literature Review Continued
● Ross (2003) utilized an online survey format to gather data on Internet sexuality (survey was in Swedish and therefore limited to a specific language group). 3,614 respondents comprised of 53% males and 47% females supported a significant difference between dropout rates prior to completion of the survey. The data offers insight into the differences in behavior for men and women who interact with the Internet in regard to disclosing personal information.

Research Questions
● This study is meant to deal with the differences among men and women in regard to their Internet activities of communication and perceived social interactions
● To a lesser extent to determine their participation in symbolic communication (use of emoticons)
● Thirdly, to explore the level of disclosure that men and women embark personally using the computer as a communication device and how gender can influence such behavior
![Page 7: Gender Differences of Internet Activities Among College and University Students](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56812c77550346895d9118fb/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Methods
● Surveys (n=70) were randomly distributed to male and female students at CSUB during the 2004-05 school year
● Participants completed a survey consisting of 56 questions (most dichotomous—yes or no responses) with 4 qualitative questions and 6 non-dichotomous items to complete
● Participants were from Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology courses ranging from daytime to evening classes
![Page 8: Gender Differences of Internet Activities Among College and University Students](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56812c77550346895d9118fb/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Findings
● The issue of whether or not activities on the Internet were different for men and women was partially supported.
● Survey data suggested that men and women use the Internet similarly but may have different levels of expectation.
● Men and women had differences in terms of Internet usage and opinions about relationships.
● Data also suggested that a small segment of men and women in the sample engaged in risky activities.

Can you fall in love or have relationships online?
![Page 23: Gender Differences of Internet Activities Among College and University Students](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56812c77550346895d9118fb/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Limitations
● Unequal proportion of male and female participants (a stratified random sample may be more appropriate)
● Sampling was amongst the Behavioral Sciences students only (spreading randomness to include other courses might reveal new data)
● Data is subject to the honor system (typical flaw of survey design – opportunity for observing actual computer behavior is totally absent)
![Page 24: Gender Differences of Internet Activities Among College and University Students](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062407/56812c77550346895d9118fb/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Conclusion
● Men and women in the survey agreed or disagreed rather equally on many of the same survey questions about their communication activities.
● There were two interactions noted in Internet usage as well as a marked difference in peak Internet usage among men and women.
● Men who indicated positive choices to survey items indicated a greater potential for optimism in regard to love and relationships with other users. Self-disclosure policies for men and women seemed equivalent.

Future Research Opportunities
● Simply, there is not enough qualitative data on the issues that the research questions explore
● Observational studies of Internet use are needed to provide another view of understanding
● Other variables within gendered groups such as age, income, marital status, occupation, etc. need to be studied with the same research questions
● New and combined methodologies may need to be instituted to provide a comprehensive summation of answers to research questions
