DEAR READER,What an honor it is to write to you in our second issue of GJ Magazine – a window into our world and

a valuable connect point to you, our community.

Locally yours for 44 years, Gene Juarez Salons & Spas has been a big part of the story of our region.

As they say, the deeper the roots, the taller the tree. Likewise, the more rich the heritage, the greater

the responsibility to grow. To be better. To evolve, with and for our clients and our community. On

behalf of our entire family, I am excited to share with you that we have indeed begun the next great

chapter of our mutual story.

From community events, to philanthropic endeavors, fashion shows and editorial work, we are

setting our beauty and wellness experts out into our communities to do what they do best. We are

kicking our activity level into high gear.

Launching as we speak, is an unprecedented amount of educational opportunities for service

providers to further elevate their craft. We are investing in digital communication tools - such as our

first GJ Mobile App for easy booking, special offers, and more – all to create the best client experience

possible. And you will see us in your favorite local magazines and on buses around the region with

our Spring/Summer 2015 campaign advertising launch – check out some behind the scenes snaps in

this issue.

The first thing Helo Matzelle said after the doctor told her about the

golf ball-sized tumor lying on the main artery of her brain was, “Please

make something beautiful out of this.”

Long time Gene Juarez client, Helo was 46 when she was diagnosed

with a brain tumor, and only had five days to come to the terms

before heading into surgery. One of the first people Helo called was

Redmond Gene Juarez stylist, Michael.

“I just had to let him know,” Helo said. “He always listens with

tenderness and compassion. I’ve been telling him everything for ten

years, so of course, he was on my list of people to call.”

Craving to feel normal in a chaotic time, Helo was moved when

Michael offered to come to her home to do her hair two days before

her head was to be shaved for surgery.

“There’s something about visiting Gene Juarez that makes me slow

down and enjoy necessary pampering,” said Helo. “So I asked Michael

if he could meet me at the salon when there weren’t a lot of people

around, but Michael said he would come to me. That meant the world

to me.

Helo cried most of the time Michael worked in her bathroom. After

washing her hair, Michael massaged her scalp just like he always did

at the salon. And for just a moment, Helo forgot about the brain tumor

located just under his fingers.

“Thank you for making me feel beautiful,” Helo said to Michael when

he left.

Now, recovered with a clean bill of health, Helo has a new definition of

beauty: relationships. “From the moment I enter Gene Juarez Salon to

the time I exit, there is a genuine atmosphere of amazing hospitality,”

said Helo. “With amazing people like Michael who care deeply about

their clients, Gene Juarez truly strives to make you feel beautiful on

the inside.”

HOW ONE TALENTED GENE JUAREZ STYLIST WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND TO MAKE HIS CLIENT FEEL BEAUTIFUL, IN A TIME WHEN SHE NEEDED IT MOST.

Our talented Geraldine, an artist at Gene Juarez in downtown Seattle, gave an inspirational presentation to 8th grade girls at Washington Middle School for the “Shades of Success” Girls Mentor Program. This program exposes the 8th graders to professional women in different careers to encourage them to pursue higher eduction.

Every year the Gene Juarez Northgate Salon delights in partnering

with Gilda’s Club, a part of the Cancer Support Community.

Our team of artists provide the hair styling and makeup for cancer

survivors, helping them put their “best face forward” for their walk

down the runway at this incredible fundraising event.

The Gene Juarez Southcenter team participated in the “VIPink Ladies Night Out”, hosting various “beauty bars”, including dry styling, cuticle cocktails and polish changes.

This private event was organized by the Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce benefiting Bright Pink, the only national non-profit organization focused on prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women.
