John Webster 1 came from Ipswich, Suffolk County, England, to Ipswich, Massachusettsfwhere he was made a freeman in1635.He died soon after coming here, leaving four sons and four daugh­ters. The family subsequently moved to Newbury. The namesof the children are given below, but not in the order of their birth,

Hannah Webster 9 married Michael Emerson and had, among other children :

Hannah, b. in Haverhill, Massachusetts,- December 28, 1657, and was married to Thomas Duston, December 3, 1677. This was the famous Hannah Duston, who, having been captured and car­ried away by the Indians, her infant child murdered before her eyes, rose in the night time, and by the assistance of her nurse,

Mary (Corliss) Neff,who had Vepi made captive at the same time, and a small captive boy, named* Samuel Leonardson, slew ten of her captors, and having scalped them, made her escape down the

)

Merrimac to her home in Haverhill. Her story is too well known to need farther elaboration here. Besides the infant killedby the Indians,^she had twelve children, five sons and seven daughters, and has a numerous posterity.

Nathan Webster 3 was one of the grantees of Chester, New Hampshire, and moved there about the year 1728. He owned two rights in the township and was a prominent citizen there for many years. Byhis wife Martha, he had the following children :

Nathan Webster 4 whose wife was Martha Blasdell, had eleven children, all but two of whom died young. Those who grew up and had families were :

Nathan Webster 5 resided on the old homestead in Chester. His wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Isaac Clifford of Candia, New Hampshire, and granddaughter of William Healy. Isaac Clifford was the son of Samuel Clifford of Kingston, New Hamp­shire, and Martha Healy, his wife, was the daughter of William and Mary (Sanborn) Healy, formerly of Hampton Falls. The children of Nathan and Elizabeth Webster were :

Moses Webster 5 moved to Hartland, Vermont, and took up two lots of wildland of whichhe made a farm that is stilloccupied by his descendants. He married inHartland, about 1780, Eliza­beth Woods, and died October 11, 1844, aged 90, and his wife died in1837 aged 87.

Children : 14. IJohn, 8 b. November 17, 1781. 15. ii Moses 8 b. March 4, 1783, m. Rhoda Stoddard. He died

about 1870, leaving three children, of whom hereafter, m Charles, 8 b. in.Rowena Sheridan. He went to Madi­

son, Ohio, and died there about the year 1850, and his children removed to Michigan.

Josiah Webster 6 graduated at Dartmouth College, in1798, and was a Congregational minister. He was pastor of the church in Essex, Mass., six years. In1808 he was settled at Hampton, New Hampshire, where he remained till his death, which took place March 27, 1837. He married December 2,1799, Elizabeth Knight, born June 11, 1771, daughter of Eliphalet and Martha (Webster) Knight, of Atkinson, New Hampshire, who died April9, 1849.

John Ordway Webster 6 went to Maine, and lived in Augusta, and other towns inits vicinity. He married, November 25, 1802, Rebecca Guild Sewall, b. September 4, 1780, daughter of Thomas and Priscilla (Cony) Sewall, of Augusta. He d. at Mobile, Ala­bama, February 3,1828. She d.at Washington, D.C, March 31, 1870. They had nine children :

Ebenezer Web­ster, ofHill,New Hampshire, and his wife Sarah /youngest sister of Hon. Daniel Webster. He died inPittsfield, New Hampshire, November 9, 1881, and she died there also, October 19, 1882.

John Calvin Webster 7 graduated at Dartmouth College in 1832 and at Andover Theological Seminary in 1835 ;preached a year in Maine ;in 1837 was chaplain to American and English seamen in Crondstadt, Russia ;was installed pastor at Hopkinton, Massachu­setts, December 19, 1833 ; in 1865 became Professor of Logic, Rhetoric and Belletters in Wheaton College, Illinois, and served inthat capacity for twelve years ; was acting pastor of Congre­gational church in Lisbon, Illinois, 1878 to 1881, and has since resided at Wheaton. D. D.,Dartmouth, 1882. January 1, 1839, married Rebecca Gair Runell, daughter of Captain WilliamRun­ell,Providence, Rhode Island. She died September 18, 1846, and he married, December 22, 1847, Elizabeth Ripley Bonton, daugh­ter^of Rev. Nathaniel Bouton, D.D., ofConcord, New Hampshire. He died Aug. 13, 1884. Nine children, and one adopted :

at New Fork Medical College, and began practice at Northwood, New Hampshire ; removed to Norwich, Connecticut, in1845, and carried on there a family school for young ladies until 1863, when he took the position ofSurgeon to the Sanitary Commission, in which he served until September 11, 1865. He was appointed, by President Grant, United States Consul, at Sheffield, England, where he has now been for over 12 years. He married, October 81, 1844, Mary Elizabeth, daughter of David Webster of Pem­broke, New Hampshire. No children.
