Dear Church Friends,

Dr. Karl Menninger, the famous American psychiatrist, once gave a lecture on mental health and was answering questions from the audience. One man asked, “What would you advise a person to do if that person felt a nervous breakdown coming on?” Everyone there expected him to answer, “Consult a psychiatrist.” To their astonishment he replied, “Leave your house, go across the railroad tracks, find someone who is in need, and do something to help that person.”

People often ask me how they can grow in their Christian faith. My answer is simply, “Get out of the church pew, go find someone who is in need, and do something to help that person.” Galatians 5:6 reminds us, “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.”

I pray you and I will be generous to others during the month of October. I pray the Holy Spirit will empower us to be kind and compassionate with one another. I pray God will help us overlook differences and mistakes as we are generous people serving God in an imperfect world.

Pastor Dennis

TAKE A NAPSwiss scientists conducted an observational study of more than 3,400 people for over five years. They collected data on nap habits and cardiovascular complications of middle-aged individuals. Those who reported taking a nap once or twice a week, for periods ranging from five minutes to an hour, were 48 percent less likely to have a heart attack, stroke or heart failure. More frequent nappers did not appear to be protected from such events. In their own words the Swiss scientists concluded, “Subjects napping once or twice weekly had a lower risk of developing any cardiovascular disease event compared with non-nappers.” Speaking of sleep – these are the guidelines from American Academy of Pediatrics: Infants: 12-16 hours Children ages 1-2 years: 11-14 hours Children ages 3-5 years: 10-13 hours Children ages 6-12 years: 9-12 hours Teens: 8-10 hours Adults: 7-9 hours

WELLNESS NEWS

HEARING LOSSOlder adults who get a hearing aid for a newly diagnosed hearing loss have a lower risk of being diagnosed with dementia, depression or anxiety for the first time over the next three years, and a lower risk of suffering fall-related injuries, than those who leave their hearing loss uncorrected. Yet only 12 percent of those who have a formal diagnosis of hearing loss actually get the devices – even when they have insurance coverage for at least part of the cost, the study shows. Men are more likely to get a hearing aid and use it. Nearly 37 percent of people with hearing loss who lived in the north-central part of the country, used a hearing aid, compared with just 5.9 percent of people in the mountain states.

Wellness Awarenessby CHERYL HOWARD, parish nurse

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8

SUBSTANCE ABUSEA major part of recovery from substance abuse of any kind is learning a new way to be in relationships. People in recovery are encouraged to be honest about their struggles, take ownership of their actions and make amends to those they have harmed. Support groups can help promote healthy attachments and restore confidence – people tend to forgive and help because they also have been on that road of addiction.

“When life puts you in tough situations, don’t say ‘Why me?’ say

PRAYER and STEPHEN MINISTRY

To Know HIM betterby CATHY MOSIER

That’s what the Ghost of Christmas Present charged Ebenezer Scrooge to do as the final scenes of “A Christmas Carol” begin. But how on earth does Ebenezer “know Him better?” How do we?The Spirit of Christmas “Yet to Come” showed Ebenezer Scrooge his future if he did not change his life. Have you looked at the 33rd chapter of the book of Ezekiel lately?? It’s an unsettling chapter in the midst of several. And the verses near the beginning are especially chilling. “If the watchman sees the sword coming, and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people, and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.” The Lord charged Ezekiel with the responsibility of warning those around him of the coming dangers when the WORD of the LORD was continually ignored. Just as the Spirit warned Ebenezer of the consequences of allowing material acquisition to rule his life. And now that we have been warned of the dangers…what are we to do?? The Spirit was quite clear – go forth and know HIM better. So what are you doing?? How are you carrying out this direction to “know HIM better?” In her book, “Discerning the Voice of GOD,” Priscilla Shirer gives some “simple” instructions on how to break the enemy’s hold on your life. “We must rely completely on the truths of Scripture.” We must actively wield “the Sword of the Spirit, which is the WORD of GOD.” [Ephesians 6:10-20] The way to do this, “Scripture memorization…intense Scripture immersion.” There is even a sheet you can pick up at the Welcome Center that gives you a month’s worth of prayer and scripture. Choose a verse, write it down – on several pieces of paper – plant them around your house where you will consistently see AND READ THEM. Next week choose another verse…the following week another verse. Repeat until 2 Corinthians 10:1-5 has become true for you. Especially verse five,

“…and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.“Are you ready to intentionally turn to Jesus in daily prayer for guidance? Are you preparing a place for the Christ child? I guarantee He’s coming. I guarantee He’s waiting for you to know Him better. I guarantee December 25 will arrive faster than you can imagine. So…what will you do??REMEMBER the Ghost of Christmas Present challenged Scrooge at the coming of the Ghost of Christmas Future, “Go forth and know him better!” And in the going forth, Scrooge became a better friend, a better master, a better man. And he knew how to keep Christmas well. May that be truly said of each of us. SSSOOO, how are YOU going to know HIM better. This babe that was born, will be born, has been born unto you in the City of David? This babe was, will be and IS OUR SAVIOR! How will we “know HIM better?”As always if either the Prayer Team or Stephen Ministry Team may aid you on your journey to know HIM better we are as close as an email, a phone call, or a visit in the hall.

In Christ’s service, Cathy

Mission Committeeby DAVE NANCE

BANQUET OPPORTUNITYThe Committee wishes to grow awareness in our congregation of the missions supported by the mission budget of our Church. One way of assisting in this awareness and connection is, to encourage attendance for banquets and other activities associated with the funded missions.

This month we are a table sponsor at the Peace Restored Banquet. The event will be held on Oct. 25 at 6 pm. More information can be found at https://peacerestored.net. Please contact Dave Nance, [email protected], for more information about joining us at the FUMC table. The regular cost for tickets is $40, but that cost is just $20 if you sign up with us at an FUMC table.

MEIJER SIMPLY GIVE PROGRAMWhat a blessing. The donations came in with contributions from the Henderson Mission Team and the Mission Committee. We were able to learn more about the program and how to maximize the leverage of the corporate donation match. Churches in Mission is very pleased with the efforts. We should see final numbers from this campaign soon. We are also well positioned to move the next time this opportunity arises.

NEEDS OF THE KIDSElementary School students are receiving regular food support with the supplementary efforts provided by your donations. Thank you! Through your giving and the efforts of many others, the needs of the kids are being met. God is providing through the actions of many people working together.

Operation Christmas Child BEGIN COLLECTING ITEMS FOR SHOE BOXESSince 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 150 countries and territories have experienced God’s love through the power of simple shoe box gifts from Operation Christmas Child (OCC). The boxes are filled with a “wow” item and other fun toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement.

Boxes are available near the Welcome Center. Helpful information on how to fill the box is also available. Packed boxes will be due early in November.

Henderson Mission Teamby DAVE NANCE

MISSION TRIP, OCTOBER 14-18, MONDAY TO FRIDAY. Plans are in the final stages for the upcoming trip to Henderson Settlement in Frakes, Kentucky, during a beautiful period of fall. We need to hear from anyone interested in this trip. Please contact Dave Nance at [email protected]. Serving, fellowship, fun, and relaxation will be the goals for the trip.

This year we will be doing the same type project as last fall, building greenhouse tables. (The image is from last fall, but this project should be identical – a continuation from last year.) We have several people from last year going, so we have experience. Our group made the template for the tables. Monday will be a travel and setup day, Tuesday and Thursday will be table building days. Wednesday will be a ‘see the Missions day’ for both Henderson Settlement and Red Bird Mission along with a trip to Pine Mountain State Park. Friday will be a cleanup and travel home day. Just four nights and five days. We will have fellowship time in the evenings with each other and with other churches that are on campus.

We hope to see the recently retired, former Mission Outreach Director, Frankie Blackburn. Frankie is a dear friend to our group. Hopefully we will have an opportunity to fellowship with her, take her to dinner on Wednesday, or help her in some little way.

CHRISTMAS FOR HENDERSON SETTLEMENT CHILDRENThis month we will finalize details for our annual Henderson Settlement toy drive. Look for more information near the end of the month and in the November Sonburst. Our church has a history of strong support for this mission event.

Christmas ProgramChildren’s Ministry is working with children, 6th grade and younger, for a short Christmas skit that will be performed on Dec. 15 during the 9:45 service. There will be singing and short speaking parts for the children to perform. Speaking parts, music and singing practice will be done during the 9:45 Sunday school time. Children will go to a dedicated classroom after being dismissed from the Sanctuary. Once practice is complete, the children will be escorted to their Sunday school classes. We hope you encourage your child to be part of this awesome program. Please contact Ms. Lydia 317.834.1787 with any questions.

Kiosks Coming Our WayThe check-in kiosks will be up and running any day now. We are currently working on getting them programmed to make it easy for you to get signed in. We will begin with our nursery through high school groups. Later, this will be expanded to include all Sunday morning adult classes and eventually the check-in will include worship.

New Pictorial Directory

We are very excited to produce a new 2020 directory. Mark your calendar for December 4-7 to make an appointment to have your picture taken. Watch for the link included in your e-bulletin to easily sign-up. There are special offers and new features including a partnership between Lifetouch and Shutterfly. Just in time for Christmas gifts! Watch for more information on how you can schedule your photography session.

Children’s Ministries is looking for Sunday School teachers for pre-k/K and 1st/2nd grade classes. This is a rotating position with two weeks on, four weeks off. If you like kids and like to teach, please give Lydia Rychtarczyk a call at 317-834-1787. It’s a great way to be involved with the children of our church.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

OCTOBER 2019

Get ready for the annual “Trunk or Treat” hosted by Family Ministries. What is a “Trunk or Treat” event? Children go from trunk to trunk collecting candy or trinkets from volunteers who have decorated their vehicles to serve as a backdrop for this spooktacular event! Candy and trinkets will be provided by Family Ministries. It will be held around the bell tower. If the weather is challenging, we will have it in the Fellowship Hall. We encourage trunk or treat

participants to dress up too! Please keep in mind that this event is for children, so we ask that all costumes be “kid” friendly and just friendly in general. We don’t want to scare the little ones. If you are interested in participating in this fun event, please complete the form below and return it to the church. If you can’t participate, you can donate individually wrapped candy that will be used at this event. You can contact Shelly Duncan at 317.437.9344 or Lydia Rychtarczyk at 317.834.1787 with questions.
