“Electricity in the Arab World- Current Status and Future Aspirations”

Introduction

In light of the technical, technological, economic, environmental and operational challenges facing the electricity sector in the Arab World which are being compounded due to the geopolitical situation in the region how can decision makers and specialists in this vital sector develop power systems in their countries in order to meet the future demand of the population and economic sectors.

The conference discusses during two days the current status and future aspirations of electricity in the Arab World with emphasis on common concerns and constraints of electricity entities as well as general outlines of plans that are needed to deal with such difficulties and future challenges. This is considered a good opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas and experiences, local and worldwide, that can be used to formulate activities and plans for the future.

The presentation of technical and economic problems facing the electricity companies, during the conference, common grounds can be identified. This fortified with successful experiences in dealing with such problems will constitute some solutions which in turn will enhance the levels of system reliability, continuity of supply and reduction in production and delivery costs to consumers.

Renewable energy is one of the important issues to be discussed in the conference. RE is one of the economic and ecological solutions for the future of electricity in the Arab World as this region is blessed with excellent solar and wind regimes. Moreover, the cost of producing electricity from Re has become economically favorable to other conventional sources.

Electric network interconnections among the Arab Countries is a major item of discussion in the conference which will hopefully establish and improve commercial dealings between countries similar to what is happening in Europe and the USA. Interconnection is considered a necessity to reduce the huge financial burden of expanding the electricity networks of countries. Furthermore, it increases the reliability and continuity of supply of the interconnected systems.

Nuclear energy, with all negative connotations and unfortunate accidents, remains one of the available solutions for the future of electricity supply on the

long term. Countries getting ready to employ nuclear energy must work hard for developing the technical and engineering personnel capable of dealing with the nuclear power technologies especially the operational and safety issues during emergencies and severe weather and natural conditions. The integration of nuclear energy and sea water desalination forms one advantage for a region that suffers from water shortage problems.

The conference addresses the vital issue of Inter -Arab energy integration with the aim of establishing a common Arab energy market. This idea builds on the European experience in establishing the common market where it started with a market for coal and steel and then developed to a full market.

The conference sessions are a mixture of lectures presenting the experience of the members of the Arab Union of Electricity and panel discussions involving experts from the Arab World to present and discuss ideas and concepts based on practical experiences and lessons learned.

1. Enhancing the cooperation and experience between electric and energy sectors in the planning, operating and controlling power systems.

2. Encouraging research and studies in the fields of power generation, transmission and distribution.

3. Enabling energy and electric engineers to demonstrate their practical problems associated with maintaining stability and continuity of supply at affordable costs.

4. Enhancing cooperation and exchanging experiences and expertise among Arab engineers within the Arab Union of Electricity.

5. Encouraging university students to make joint research with engineers in electric utilities in the fields of power systems.

6. Establishing networks and collaborations among persons and entities within the Arab Union of Electricity and counterparts in the world.

1. Status of electricity supply industry in the Arab World- technical problems and energy economics.

2. Renewable energy in the Arab World and its integration within the Arab electric systems- technical and operational challenges.

3. Arab interconnections- a technical and economic necessity.4. The Common Arab Market for electricity is a corner stone for Arab

energy integration- market structure, legal and tariff systems, common projects.

5. Nuclear energy for electricity generation and water desalination- the need to master the technology and reach a critical mass in skilled engineers and technicians.

6. Panel discussion on “financing electric projects in the Arab World”- models of participative financing schemes.

7. Panel discussion on “interconnecting systems in the Arab World together and with European, Asian and African systems as well”- with participation from DGs and CEOs of the Arab Union of Electricity.

Arabic and English with simultaneous translation.

The conference will be held in Le Royal Hotel which is one of the most luxurious Hotels in Amman located at the 3rd Circle .

Paper format

The following should be taken in consideration when the paper is prepared:

-Paper title: Font: Times New Roman, bold size 16

-Author/Authors name and address: Font: Times New Roman, normal size 14

-Paper abstract: Font: Times New Roman, italic bold, size 12, maximum 300 words.

-Text: maximum 12-15 pages long, the titles and paragraphs should be arranged in proper way as possible, font: Times New Roman, normal, size 12.

-Figures and diagrams: figures and diagrams including pictures should be numbered and titled in a proper way. They should be sequentially ordered.

-Conclusions and recommendations: should reflect the importance of paper including the significance, challenges and applications.

-Acknowledgment: if included to be placed before references.

-References: adequate and sequential references, according to their places in paragraphs, should be used in the paper.

-MS Word Office: should be preferably used for the paper.

- Power Point: should be preferably used for the presentation.

Important dates:

- Deadline for receiving paper abstracts(one page) 1/6/2018- Informing paper authors of acceptance 1/8/2018- Receiving full paper 1/10/2018- Modifying paper in final form 1/11/2018- Sending presentation one week before conference.

Authors privileges:

The Arab Union of Electricity was established in 1987 , with the following aims:1- Improving and developing the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy in the Arab World.2- Developing, improving and coordinating the areas of interest of its members and strengthening the relationship among them.Almost all Arab Ministries and Utilities of Electricity are active members in the AUE. Many of the manufacturing companies in the electrical field are associate members. The active members are currently 32 while the associate members are 20 and the observing members are 2. They all form the General Assembly of AUE. The Board of Directors includes 10 members- Headed by Eng. Essa Ben Hilal Al Kuwari, Chairman of Kahramaa-Qatar . The Board of Directors is appointed every three years from the active members.The AUE Secretariat is based in Amman- Jordan hosted by the National Electric Power Company.

National Electric Power Company

The National Electric Power Company is located in Amman . It is the legal ancestor of the Jordan Electricity Authority established in 1967 . The Company carry out the mission of purchasing and transmission of Electricity power from the generating Companies ( Governmental and Independent companies who are the source of generating all types of Traditional and Renewable Energy. And then performs selling it to the Distribution Companies and to the Principal Consumers. Since it is considered the Single Buyer Model by owning the transmission network consisting of overhead lines , underground cables and substations of 400 KV and 132 KV. In addition NEPCO also operates the Electricity System by ensuring safety Standards and the security of Supply of Energy and the stability of Electrical system through the National Control Centre. NEPCO has main aims as follows:
