1. Exaggeration

• For this question you have to explain why a person’s view is exaggerated

• In other words you have to prove why what they are saying is not true

• To prove that the person is exaggerating, you have to use evidence from sources

“The Child Support Agency has not reduced the number of single parent families receiving benefits. Families are no better off under the Child Support Agency than they were before”

Fiona Anderson says two things.

Your task is to use the sources to explain why each of the sentences is exaggerated.

• Fiona Anderson is exaggerating when she says “The Child Support Agency has not reduced the number of single parent families receiving benefits”.

• This is because in Source 1 it says that since the agency has been set up more than 15,000 families have stopped receiving income support.

• Fiona Anderson is exaggerating when she says “Families are no better off under the Child Support Agency than they were before”.

• This is because in Source 2 is says that families received an average of £26.81 a week before the agency was set up but this changed to £43.86 after the agency was set up.

• You have to identify which ones are exaggerated

Model Answer

The main cause of industrial disputes in 2006

My conclusion is that the main cause of industrial disputes in 2006 was pay.

I can conclude this because in source 2 it shows that 73% of disputes were about pay which is more than for any other reason.

Model Answer

The year which was the furthest from the average for working days lost

My conclusion is that 2002 was the furthest from the average days lost.

I can conclude this because in source 2 it shows that the average is about 0.6 million days but in 2002 it was around 1.2 million.

3. Support and Oppose

• For this type of question, you must find evidence which supports and evidence that opposes someone’s view.


• You are given two sources and someone’s view.

• You must find one piece of evidence which supports and one which opposes the view of the person from the sources.

• Question is worth 4 marks.


Edinburgh and Glasgow have the highest percentage of spoilt ballot papers. The number of spoilt ballot papers did not affect the result in any of the selected constituencies.
