Types of Security Duty Door security Roaming security Facility security Door Security **Door security involves monitoring the different exits (other than the front entrance) to check on people entering and exiting from doors other than the front entry by the ticket sales. **Some people may just want to step outside to have a smoke or traders may be required to go out to their vehicles for things. Most others should enter through front. People may try to sneak objects out through exits (shoplifted materials, for example) or in (alcohol, for example). **Requires cooperating with traders in immediate area. **Smokers need to stay at least 30 feet from the building. Roaming Security **Roaming security involves patrolling certain areas by walking around within that particular area. People assigned to roaming security are also responsible for communications. It is important to work in pairs, be flexible and communicate clearly. **The exchange of phone numbers is encouraged – the numbers will be provided at sign-in. (We’re getting rid of walkie-talkies, so this is a trial for us – feed back is appreciated). The use of cell phones will help all security keep in touch. **While on the floor, help by keeping an eye on shoppers at the vendors. Help by answering questions when possible. **You may be required to assess situations in order to report them accurately. Roaming teams will often be responsible for bringing in newly arrived volunteers to their assigned areas, and informing door facility security volunteers of break times, end of shift times, or reassignments. Three areas require roaming teams: the bleachers, pow-wow floor and the facility. **Bleacher security primarily involves keeping people from throwing things, keeping people from climbing ladders and scaffolds and restricting smoking. Watch out for kids climbing, on hanging over or through bleachers, and alcohol drinkers.

-Floor roaming security teams floor provide assistance with communications and crisis intervention. Roaming team members should be particularly watchful of possible shoplifting, lost parents/kids, people taking pictures at inappropriate times and be ready to prevent arguments or conflicts from turning into fights. Work in teams as much as possible. It’s particularly important to use the “buddy system” of reporting. Oftentimes, the pow-wow MC will request that no pictures be taken during certain times. Some people will not hear the announcement, others will ignore it. Please remind them of the MC’s request in a polite way. Some people will ignore you or defy you. In this case, you will have to use your own judgment in how to handle this possibility. Involves patience and tact as well as extensive walking and standing. An example would be to say something about being respectful of the request. Facilities Security Security involves patrolling the halls and locker rooms immediately outside the pow-wow arena itself. The main responsibilities of this job involve protecting university and personal property as well as preventing unauthorized people from access to restricted areas of the building. Be particularly aware of possible theft in the locker rooms. Immediately report any signs of forced entry or attempted forced entry. Observe and/or question people (nicely) in locker rooms who may appear to have no plausible explanation for being there. Keep an eye on restrooms to report any janitorial needs. Requires both male and female.

EVERYONE DO NOT intervene in something if your own personal safety is at risk. One person should “hold and observe,” that is, contain the situation so that it does not worsen, observe the situation so that an accurate report can be made later. If your team does not have communication devices, one of you should proceed immediately to the nearest person that is a Crew Leader or NMU Staff. At this point, the decision should be made whether or not Public Safety will be called in.
