SPORTS INFORMATION

Matt Threatt is in his first year as an assistant in the sports information office. Threatt will assist in PC’s day-to-day sports information operations for the 2007-2008 school year. Threatt, a recent graduate of North Greenville University with a B.S. in Sports Management, most recently served as a Student Assistant in the sports information department at North Greenville for four

years under the direction of North Greenville Athletic Director Jan McDonald. A native of Fort Mill, S.C., Threatt is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as well as the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

Brian HandDirector of Sports Information and Game Operations Brian Hand is in his second year as Presbyterian College’s Sports Information Director, heading the publicity efforts for the �6-sport Blue Hose athletic program. His duties will also include oversee-ing game operations for PC home athletic events. Prior to accepting the position with

PC, Hand worked as a public affairs assistant with the Southern Conference in Spartanburg, S.C. Hand also worked as an intern with the Greenville Lions professional soccer team and as a sports clerk with The Greenville News before moving to Nashville, Tenn., in 2004 to serve as a media relations assistant with the Pacific Coast League’s Nashville Sounds, then the Class AAA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He returned to the Upstate in 2005 to assist with media relations and game management for the SoCon. A native of Greer, S.C., Hand completed his undergraduate studies at North Greenville College in Tigerville, S.C. in 2003. He also holds a master’s degree in sport management from Middle Tennessee State University. Hand was a standout soccer player at North Greenville twice earning defensive player of the year honors. In 200�, Hand was named to the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association honorable mention All-America team. Hand, 27, is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He is engaged to Amy Prater and the couple will wed on Nov. 23, 2007 in Greenville, S.C.

Matt ThreattSports Information Assistant

Jon Cole is in his first year as the As-sistant Director of Sports Information at Presbyterian College. Cole joins the Blue Hose after eight years with Greensboro College where he served as an assistant in the Sports Infor-mation office with The Pride. While at GC, Cole was the main contact for baseball, while also helping to

compile statistics for a multitude of sports. Cole served as the official scorekeeper for the 2006 and 2007 USA South women’s lacrosse conference tournament as well as the 2005 men’s basketball conference tournament. Cole’s career experience also includes serving as a Training Camp intern with the Carolina Panthers in 2003 and serving as a member of the gameday staff for the Panthers for the past four years. During that span, Cole worked with members of the on-hand media at Panthers’ games, performing in-game tasks for CBS, Fox and various team radio networks as well as working with the opponents sidelines in 2004 and with Carolina’s media guides in 2004 and 2005. A 2006 graduate of UNC Greensboro, Cole served as the Media Relations Director and Website Manager for the Greensboro Gen-erals (ECHL) from 2002-04 and Greensboro Prowlers (af2) from 2000-03. A native of Asheboro, N.C., Cole will be the primary contact for volleyball, women’s basketball and baseball, but will also help with all �6 varsity sports at PC.

2007-08 PROSPECTUS The fourth year of head coach Jessica Vanco’s tenure as Pres-byterian College women’s bas-ketball coach will mark a sig-nificant change as the team heads into its first year againstNCAA Division I competition. PC has reason to be ex-cited for the upcoming 2007-08 season, not only because of the potential this particular team has, but also because their schedulewill featurefive teamsthat competed in a postseason tournament last season. Four of those teams: Georgia, West Virginia, UNC Asheville, and East Carolina, competed in the NCAA Women’s Tournament and future Big South Conference rival High Point was selected to the NIT. The 2007-08 schedule will also feature teams from two particular conferences, West Virginia from the Big East and Georgia from the SEC, that have rich traditions of making sub-stantial runs at the national title. Coach Vanco sees the schedule as “a very excit-ing way to represent Presby-terian College at the NCAA Division I level. “Our schedule is very com-petitive and will challenge us every time we step on the court. This will be an awesome experi-ence, especially for our three seniors as they make their mark on the first NCAA Division I women’s basketball team at PC.” Home games against Mid-American Conference team, Buf-falo and Conference USA tourna-ment champion, East Carolina, will give fans an opportunity to see quality Division I competi-tion in the opening months of the season. The team will also face a challenging stretch of seven consecutive games on the road in the latter half of the season. Vanco has lined up the opportunity to coach twice in her home state of Ohio with PC facing off against Ohio Univer-sity and the University of Cincin-nati over Thanksgiving break. Despite all the challenges that lay ahead, PC returns much-

needed consistency to the lineup. Three of the top four scorers from the 2006-07 squad, senior captain Amy Jones (17.6 ppg), senior captain Bridget Takach (10.2 ppg), and junior Sharie Hopkins (11.6), are returning this season and they are expected to bring even more to the hardcourt this season. These three are expected to give PC a trifecta of scoring within a fast moving offense that will pose very tough defensive match-ups for oppos-ing teams. Additionally, PC will be led on the defensive end by the third senior captain, Tishe Sand-ers, who brings a tremendous amount of quickness and energy to the court within a very aggres-sive defensive set. Through the leadership of the three senior captains, PC is poised to excel and grow as a team in the face of some very skilled competition. As the transition is gradually made into a Big South Confer-ence schedule the Lady Blue Hose will meet UNC Asheville and Radford in back-to-back home games in January. Then they will return back to the road facingfiveBigSouthteamswithgames at High Point, Charleston Southern, Winthrop, Liberty and Elon. Presbyterian completes its home competition for the season with senior night against Converse College on Feb. 16. Backcourt The proven combination of Jones, Takach and Sanders will provide a solid backcourt for the high-octane offense. Takach comes off a season in which she finished with some very well-rounded statistics, including 286 points, grabbing 114 rebounds and dishing out 101 assists. Her assist total put her into some elite company as one of only 10 play-ers in program history to reach the 100 assist plateau during a single season. Although she had a terrific season last year,with all she has worked on in the off-season and her leadership, de-termination, and experience, she is expected to have even more


success during her senior year. Jones, who missed the second part of the season due to a foot injury, looks to turn her off-season workouts into a strong senior year. She started in all 13 games in which she was healthy last sea-son and she led the team from the free-throw line with an 85% aver-age. She is a smart player and a prolificscorerthatisexpectedtopose a constant threat on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Sanders appearedin 20 games for PC last season and is expected to have an even bigger impact both offensively and defensively during her senior season. As an energetic leader in the backcourt, she will undoubt-edly bring additional quickness, toughness and heart to the court. Another important contributor in the backcourt is Kristin Kidd (5-11, Valdese, N.C.), a transfer from Appalachian State, who will return this year from a foot injury suffered last season. Her versatility to play four positions on the court, along with her work ethic and love of the game, will make her key in the PC offensive and defensive strategies. A host of freshmen, including Katlin Moore (5-7, Fort Mill, S.C.), Erica Deahl (5-10, Lexington, S.C.) and Erin Doherty (5-7, Den-ver, Colo.) will compete for time in the backcourt and add much needed depth. In particular, the quick and athletic Moore will have an immediate impact on the game with her incredible basketball sense which allows her to see the floorwell and create shotsoff the dribble. Fellow freshman Deahl brings a physical style of play to the backcourt and when combined with her dedication to working hard on the court she will see considerable playing time. Doherty is expected to battle for time at the two-spot and bring her winning attitude and three-point shooting accuracy to the court.

Frontcourt The young but promising frontcourt is expected to be led by three returners in Sharie Hopkins, Taylor Price, and Lea

Smith. The lone junior of the squad, Hopkins looks to be a stong force in the middle. Con-tinuing to progress throughout preseason workouts, Hopkins is an excellent rebounder that was responsible for more than 100 boards last season. Ad-ditionally, she was a prominent scorer with 11.6 ppg. and also was very successful on the de-fensive end with 10 blocks and 14 steals. Sophomore Price, a 6-foot-2 center, will give the Lady Blue Hose a physical pres-ence in the paint. Price, along with her frontcourt teammates, willlooktofillthevoidleftopenby Morgan Johnson, whom she shared a season-high blocks (22) with last season. As her game continues to progress, Price will give the backcourt a valuable scoring option to ac-company her defensive pres-ence. Smith, one of only fiveplayers to appear in every game last season as a sophomore, will provide a huge lift for the squad as well. Smith shot very wellfromthefield(46%),tohelp

out the Lady Blue Hose with 162 points during the 2006-07 season. Her rebounding prowess, which included 50 offensive rebounds last season, along with her quick moves with her back to the bas-ket,willmakeSmith difficult foropponents to defend against. A pair of freshman will battle for playing time at the forward position. Chelsea Wright, one of the most athletic players on the team, will give PC some much needed versatility and depth in that position.A fluid playerwithquick moves to the basket, Wright has unlimited potential. Liz Blue, a 6-foot-1 freshman forward from Marietta, Ga., will also get her share of playing time for PC. She has the speed and capability to convert shots from both inside the paint and beyond the perimeter.

Jessica Vanco, a 1999 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, enters her fourth season as head coach of the women’s basketball program at Presbyterian College. Vanco is the fifth head coach in program history. Vanco guided a 2006-07 Presbyterian College offense that generated four double-digit scorers. Without the services of Amy Jones, Sharie Hopkins and Morgan Johnson for a complete season, her squad managed to find balance and offensive consistency by using a variety of offensive sources. In the 2005-06 season, Vanco and the Blue Hose flip-flopped their 2004-05 record and concluded the season at 21-7. The team advanced to the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference tournament. In her first season at the helm, Vanco led the Lady Blue Hose to a record of seven wins against 21 losses and finished seventh in the

South Atlantic Conference regular season with a 4-10 mark. The team lost in the first round of the 2005 Food Lion/SAC Tournament to Carson-Newman, 70-52. Prior to PC, Vanco, a native of Medina, Ohio, spent her previous two seasons as an assistant coach with the women’s basketball program at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. During the 2003-04 season, she helped lead the Lady Paladins to an 18-11 overall record and a 14-6 mark in the Southern Conference regular season, good for a second place finish. In addition, the team advanced to their fifth straight semifinal appearance in the Southern Conference Tournament before falling to Western Carolina University. Prior to her tenure at Furman, Vanco served as an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., during the 2001-02 season. Vanco was the recruiting coordinator and assisted with scouting, practice preparation, budget organization, and as an academic coordinator. Prior to her stint at West Point, she served as an assistant coach at Salem International University in Salem, WVa., during the 2000-2001 season. Vanco graduated from St. Bonaventure University in Saint Bonaventure, N.Y., with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1999. She earned her Masters in Education with specialization in Counseling and Sport Psychology in 2000 from Boston University in Boston, Mass. During her playing career, she was a four-year letterwinner at St. Bonaventure. She was the team’s most improved player as a junior and was a captain during her senior season.

Presbyterian College women’s basketball head coach, Jessica Vanco, announced the hiring of Dionna McPhatter as an assistant coach during the summer of 2007. McPhatter’s main on-court responsibilities with the Lady Blue Hose will be guard play and the offensive scheme. “I am very excited about Dionna joining our staff, “ said Vanco. “She brings a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and energy to our program. As a graduate of West Point, she also brings with her a strong academic background and NCAA Division I playing experience.” In 2004, McPhatter graduated with honors from the United States Military Academy with a B.S. in General Management and a minor in Systems Engineering. A National Merit Scholarship winner, McPhatter was a four-year letterwinner as a point guard

on the women’s basketball team at Army. Vanco coached McPhatter during her sophomore season when she was an assistant coach at Army. She is a two-time Ohio High School Division I state champion (’98, ’99) with Pickerington High School in Ohio. During her junior season in 1999, her high school team was also awarded the Associated Press National Championship. Prior to taking the job at PC and after graduating from West Point, she worked for three years as a Market Research Man-ager with Procter & Gamble in Fayetteville, AR and Boston, MA. While working for Procter & Gamble, she also helped coach a 10-and-under team to two state championships.

Holly Brooks is in her second season with the Lady Blue Hose after joining the Women’s Basketball staff last year after serving as an assistant coach at Concord University during the 2005-2006 season. During Coach Brooks’ first year at PC, she was in charge of guard play and offense. For the 2007-2008 season her role has changed. Brooks will be working with the post players, the defensive side of the game and guard/forward rebounding. During her time at Concord, Brooks led the Lady Lions preseason and postseason, which included their strength and conditioning program along with basketball skill sessions. Addition-ally, she assisted in game preparation, scouting opposing teams and recruitment of student-

athletes. “I am excited for Coach Brooks to work with the post players this year. It comes natural to her because she played post in college,” remarked Vanco. “Defense fits with her personality – high energy and intensity.” Off the court, Coach Brooks continues as the staff’s recruiting coordinator. “Coach Brooks has been here for a year now, and understands what type of kid we are looking for at PC. She is very good at building and keeping relationships with coaches and players.” After graduating from high school in northern Iowa, Brooks played basketball at Grand View College for one season prior to sustaining a career ending knee injury. Although she transferred to Iowa State after her injury, she was still very involved in the Grand View College program as Head Junior Varsity Coach. In 2004, she graduated from Iowa State University with a B.A. in Elementary Education.

Dr. John V. GriffithPresident

Dr. John V. Griffith, a �969 graduate of Dickinson College, is in his ninth year as President of Presbyterian College. Griffith became the �6th president of PC on Jan. �, �998, replacing Dr. Kenneth B. Orr who retired after guiding the college for �8 years. Griffith was inaugurated on Oct. �0, �998, as part of Homecoming festivities.

Griffith continues to guide Presbyterian College through the new strategic plan which will take PC through the first decade of the 2�st century. Griffith came to PC after spending 20 years of service at several colleges in different capacities. He began his work at the college level in �977, when he was hired as a lecturer at Syracuse Uni-versity. Prior to his time at Syracuse, Griffith served as a chaplain at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Mass., from �972-76 and as a minister at the Village Baptist Church in Sherbune, N.Y., from �976-78. He served as a lecturer at Syracuse University for one year before accepting a job at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he was an associate director for Project Choice, a $�50,000 project on student consumer protection. He moved on to Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., in �979, where he was hired as Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid and as a member of the faculty. He served in this capacity for the next six years before being named Vice President for Institutional Advancement in �985. During the next four years, Griffith helped develop Project MATCH, a $�50,000 project directed at intellectual development and college admissions. While at Davidson, he was also instrumental in the development of Love of Learning, an intervention program directed at African-American youth. Griffith continued his work at Davidson College until �989, when he was named president of Arkansas College, a private liberal arts college in Batesville, Ark., which later changed its name to Lyon College. He served as president of Lyon, a PCUSA-related school, for eight years before coming to Presbyterian College. Throughout his career, Griffith has served on numerous com-mittees and councils, including the executive committee of the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities and the Governor’s Advisory Board of Technology and Telecommunica-tions for the State of Arkansas. He is an active board member of the Laurens County Economic Development Corporation and was honored as its 2003 Man of the Year. He is an honorary board member of the Upstate Alliance, and a gubernatorial appointment to the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. He also serves on the board of directors for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. Griffith graduated cum laude from Dickinson College in �969 with a bachelor’s degree in religion, receiving the Hoffstatder Award as the most outstanding senior. He later graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in �972 with a Master of Divinity degree, being named valedictorian and baccalaureate speaker of his class. Griffith received his Ph.D. degree in intel-lectual development from the Syracuse University in �980. He and his wife, the former Nancy Shell, are the parents of two sons: Matthew, a graduate of Davidson College, and Chris, a graduate of Dickinson College.

Dr. William B. “Bee” Carlton is in the midst of his fifth year as Director of Athletics at Presbyterian College. Carlton accepted the position in July of 2003.

He is responsible for the overall operation of the ath-letic department including the budget, hiring, evaluation, and

supervision of the staff; facility and staff development; and fund raising activities. During his tenure, Carlton has made an immediate im-pact on his alma mater’s athletic department. He has been instrumental in the department’s continued advancement, including the starting of men’s and women’s lacrosse as well as women’s golf. In addition, he has been very active upon his return to the Clinton community, including serving on the executive board of the Laurens County Division of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Carlton came to PC from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where for six years, he gained extensive athletic and academic administration experience. He is formerly the director of systems engineering and operations research academic programs, managing a staff of more than 30. He also served as the primary liaison between coaches and the athletic and academic administration for the execution of athletic programs. His duties included competition coordi-nation and ensuring that the academy’s student-athletes met university and NCAA eligibility standards. From �997-2002, Carlton served as the head officer repre-sentative to the Army Sprint football team and is the former assistant officer representative to the NCAA Division I Army football team. He maintained close contact with student-athletes as the officer-in-charge of the U.S. Military Academy Fellowship of Christian Athletes, coordinating, supervising, and leading weekly devotionals, small group Bible studies, and Christian activities. As the chairman of the West Point Golf Course Advisory Council, Carlton assisted the Army golf coach in ensuring the facility met standards to support recruiting and competition for the program. A �976 graduate of Presbyterian College, Carlton was cap-tain of the Blue Hose football team during his senior season. A three-year letterwinner, he was the first All-South Atlantic Conference player from PC. In addition to his military credentials and PC degree, Carlton holds a master’s degree in operations research from Georgia Tech and a Ph.D. in operations research from the University of Texas at Austin. Carlton’s duties include overall management of the athletic department and NCAA compliance issues. He also represents PC at Big South Conference functions and through such col-lege organizations as the Scotsman Club. Carlton and his wife, the former Laura Sholar, have three daughters: Leigh, Lindsay and Claire.

PC ATHLETIC FACILITIES The Presbyterian College Athletic Department is recognized as having some of the finest athletic facilities in the Southeast. The �6-sport athletic department’s athletic facilities include the 2,500-seat Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center, Callaway Ten-nis Courts, Edens Field at Martin Soccer Stadium, the PC Baseball Complex, and the PC Softball Complex.

Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center The facility bears the name of the late Ross E. Templeton ’24, distin-guished alumnus and business leader of Charlotte and Clinton, who was a life-long devotee of PC sports. Completed in �975, the facility serves as both a sports and academic center. The Furman Pinson Arena seats more than 2,000 spectators for men’s and women’s basketball as well as volley-ball. In 2000, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Staton provided a new floor for the fa-cility. Ample classrooms, multi-purpose space, and equipment serve the physical education instruction program. Adjoining Templeton Center on the right is the new Johnson-Callaway Center, an ��,500-square-foot

addition con-taining men’s and women’s locker rooms and �0 coaches’ offices. Located directly behind this facility is the Kemper D. Lake, M.D. Sports Medicine Center which houses PC’s Sports Medicine staff who maintain the health of all Blue Hose athletes. The Mabry-Smith-Yonce Center is the 6,000-square-foot facility adjoining to the left of the Templeton Center that was built in �994. This facility provides meeting space for student organizations, alumni groups, athletic teams, and special events. It also includes a kitchen, restrooms, and a storage area.

Templeton Weight Facility Located in the Templeton Center, the new weight room which opened in October of 2004, replaced the facility’s racquetball court that was no longer in service. The 38’ x 70’ addition provides an additional 2,660 square feet of weightlifting area for the college’s �6 varsity athletic teams. The original weight room, located at the east end of the Fur-man B. Pinson Court, provides 2,400 square feet of workout space that will give the Blue Hose athletic teams the flexibility to work out in both weight room facilities while avoiding scheduling conflicts. The new weight room includes custom equipment designed and installed by Ar-rowHawk of Laurens, S.C.

Templeton Tennis Center Located next to the Ross E. Templeton Center, the Templeton Tennis Center is home for the nationally ranked Blue Hose men’s and women’s tennis programs. Templeton Courts has served as host for several regular season and postseason events, including hosting the SAC Tennis Cham-pionships from 2002-04.

Martin Stadium Martin Soccer Stadium, seating approximately 400, was constructed in 2000 by the Kenneth Martin Family, of Greenville, S.C. Dr. Robert M. Edens ’77, of Columbia, S.C. provided the soccer playing field. The facility is home for the Blue Hose men’s and women’s soccer programs which have received national recognition over the years. This facility has also served as host of several postseason events at the high school and

PC ATHLETIC FACILITIESPC Softball Complex The PC Softball Complex is located on the 3�-acre Young Intramural Park. This facility is home to the Blue Hose Softball program and was built in �997 when the sport was still at club level. The facility has a new scoreboard located behind the rightfield fence which was donated by Pepsi-Cola of Greenville, S.C., prior to the 2005 season. Behind the scoreboard are batting cages, while the complex also has three other soft-ball fields which can be used for practice or tournament competition. The complex has served host to many tournaments, including the Food Lion/ SAC Tournament from 200�-03 and in 2007.

Johnson Field at Old Bailey Stadium Johnson Field was named for Walter A. Johnson, who came to Presby-terian College in �9�5 when he was 22 and served as coach and athletic director for 43 years. President John McSween dedicated Bailey Stadium at the opening home football game of the �928 season. The 3,000 seat facility, which is now used as the home site by the Blue Hose men and women’s lacrosse teams, resulted mainly from a $�0,000 gift from W.J. Bailey, Clinton banker and industrialist, as a memorial to his son William Cyrus Bailey, �908. The Bailey Foundation provided for the renovation of the track and stadium in �986. The facility served as the home field for the Blue Hose football

program from its opening prior to the �928 season until the first two games of the 2002 season. During that time, the Blue Hose compiled a record of �85-�09-8, good for a .626 winning percentage.

PC Baseball Complex The Presbyterian College baseball team plays its home games at one of the most attractive facilities in South Carolina, the PC Baseball Complex. The Com-plex is located at the eastern end of the college campus and was built in the late �980’s. The facility has served as host to numerous postseason events at the collegiate and high school level over the years. The complex boasts a covered batting facility down the first base line and a �0-inning scoreboard located behind the leftfield fence.

Bailey Memorial Stadium During the 2002 season, Presbyterian College opened the new 6,500-seat Bai-ley Memorial Stadium. This state-of-the-art facility features a multi-level press box, a spacious field house, and concession stands for home and visiting fans. Guarding the entrance to Bailey Memorial Stadium is a �5-foot statue, which was graciously donated by Mr. Irwin Belk, of the Blue Hose mascot, nicknamed Cyrus Bailey. Scotsman Club members will have the opportunity to watch exciting Blue Hose foot-ball from the loggia level, which has open access to the home stands and a superb view of the playing field. The third story of the press box is the president’s level. Special guests will enjoy Blue Hose football from the plush surround-ings of the private president’s box. Also located on this level is the game operations box, home and visiting radio booths which are located on each end of this level, and the sports information box. The top level of the press box is the film level, which offers coaches’ boxes and a filming area for both teams. The playing surface, Claude Crocker Field, is made of bermuda grass. Located at the west end of Crocker Field is the Yonce Field House. The 9,000-square-foot facility houses both home and visiting football teams with locker room facilities. A doctor’s office and a sports medicine taping room are also located in the field house.
