EXTENSION OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE

LABORATORY OF BIOINDICATORS OF WATER QUALITY –

ACVAPUR POTOCI, IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE

POLLUOSENSITIVITY OF AQUATIC

ORGANISMS

The main aim of this project consists in extending the capacity of the Laboratory of the

bioindicators of the water quality - ACVAPUR, in order to demonstrate the particularities of

some aquatic taxa of being polluosensitive, to make them new water quality bioindicators.

As it stands now, the ACVAPUR Laboratory is specialized on monitoring the water

quality by biological methods based on bioindicator taxa (phytoplankton, zooplankton,

macrozoobenthos and ichthyofauna), as a means of analyzing the impact of the intensive salmon

farming in floating cages on the aquatic communities and on the water quality of Bicaz

Reservoir. By this project, we intend to extend the capacity of this laboratory by implementing new

biological technologies for the detection of the pollutants and their impact on the morphology

and the structure of the aquatic polluosensitive taxa, as well as on polluosensitivity mechanisms.

The biological methods for assessing the water quality have multiple advantages over

the classical physico – chemical methods. These are less expensive and are based on the some

taxa to be sensitive or tolerant to the different types of pollution.

Also, by their bioaccumulation capacity, aquatic organisms can deposit the pollutants in

their organs and tissues, realizing a great concentration of pollutants in “target structures” and

this can allow us to detect the low levels of aquatic pollutants, even after the pollution wave

disappeared. The bioaccumulation mechanisms are studied in large number of countries, and

they form the basis of some new methods for assessing and monitoring the water quality.

Our project answers the requirements of 60/2000 Water Framework Directive, that

recommends the classification of the water in 5 quality categories, taking into account living

organisms, which is reflected by the structure and functioning of the organism communities

living in. By the specific activities of this type of project, we intend: to make the working space

adequate, according to the national and European standards; making the existent infrastructure

more useful; supplying modern new research equipment necessary for the objectives of the

project; supplying materials and services necessary for the scientific research. The ACVAPUR

Laboratory develops research activities in the Environmental Protection domain and promotes

young researches in their activities. By extending the present infrastructure for research, we aim

to study the eco-morphological and structural characteristic of some new groups of bioindicator

organisms which should form the basis of new biological methods for assessing the lake water

quality.

Being part of the university, this lab permits the young researches the use of highly

technical equipments, and at the same time increasing the degree of the utility of the present

infrastructure. All these may contribute to improving our research capacity for facilitating the

participation in international research projects.
