NOTE: Scholarly Activity is an additional required element of the curriculum. Students are introduced to Scholarly Activity and research opportunities during the preclinical years 1 and 2. Students enroll in a required 8-week Scholarly Activity experience typically during Year 3. This culminates in a �nal report that must be submitted in Year 4.

Co-enrolled electives are an optional component of the curriculum that may be available to one or more medical student classes. Co-enrolled electives are not available for students in the fall term of Year 1. Students must be Active in Good Standing and may only enoll in one co-enrolled elective at a time. A maximum of 4 weeks of co-enrolled electives (optional) may be used toward the elective requirement for graduation.

Introduction to Clinical Medicine 1 is a year-long longitudinal ICM course in the �rst year with Clinical Skills Scholars as small group mentors.

Longitudinal 4-Year Learning Communities (LC) Curriculum

Students in years 1-4 participate in a required Learning Communities educational experience, from matriculation to graduation, with Learning Community mentors. Students also have the opportunitiyto participate in various service learning and interprofessional educational experiences throughout their medical training.

** All 3rd year students on all four clinical campuses complete clinical clerkships in the same disciplines: Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and OB-Gyn represent 8-week clerkships; Psychiatry, Neurology, and Family Medicine represent 4-week clerkships. Students in the Primary Care Track (TLC 2 ) parallel curriculum on the Tuscaloosa Regional Campus complete clerkships over a 12-month longitudinal integrated clerkship (https://cchs.ua.edu/msa/longitudinal/). Clerkships may be taken in any order in accordance with educational program requirements and scheduling across clinical sites. Introduction to Clinical Medicine 2 is a year-long longitudinal ICM course in the second year with Clinical Skills Scholars as small group mentors.

Evidence-Based Medicine is a one-week course in the spring of the second year -- followed by six weeks of USMLE Step 1 prep time plus one week for Introduction to Clinicals (This is transition-to-MS3-clerkships week; scheduling may vary by clinical campus site). Four weeks of Special Topics are required for graduation; there are several opportunities throughout the MS2-4 years for students to earnSpecial Topics credit. Additionally, a maximum of 4 weeks of co-enrolled electives (optional) may be used toward the elective requirement for graduation.
