Dear Friends, This year we begin the celebration of Genesee Valley Conservancy’s 25th anniversary! For some, the Conservancy may still seem like a new organization. For others, the Conservancy has been around for quite some time. No matter how long you’ve been involved with Genesee Valley Conservancy, there is no doubt you have benefitted from the conservation the organization has completed. And our work - the protection of habitat, open space, and farmland - will continue to have a positive impact on our community, in perpetuity. Whether you have hiked on one of our nature preserves, attended an event on a privately conserved property, or driven past the farms that will remain forever open, these experiences will be shared for years to come thanks to the community’s creation of, and continued support of, the

Genesee Valley Conservancy. The Conservancy has grown significantly since it was incorporated in 1990. In that first year we raised $13,000. This was enough funding to cover the legal and startup expenses of the organization and carry funding over into the following year. In 1991, that funding jump-started the organizations first two conservation projects, protecting 1,100 acres of land. Over the past 25 years we have grown in size, staff, and acres conserved (now more than 14,400 acres!). In December, we were saddened to say goodbye to Katy Festa (Development and Communications Coordinator) who worked for the Genesee Valley Conservancy for five years. Katy played a variety of key roles with development, communications, and our original accreditation through the Land Trust Accreditation Commission.

She has taken a development position with the University of Rochester’s library system and we know they will benefit from what she learned from and gave to the Genesee Valley Conservancy. Thanks Katy! We are now in the process of developing a new Strategic Plan to take us into the next 25 years. We already have a large number of important, high-impact projects in the pipeline. With your continued support we will be able to better preserve and protect our natural heritage in and around the Genesee Valley. All of us with the Conservancy thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Gregg Hartvigsen, President

The mission of the Genesee Valley Conservancy is to protect the habitat, open space and farmland of the Genesee Valley region.

Two farms in Livingston County were selected for permanent protection through the New York State Farmland Protection Implementation Program. This is an extremely competitive program. The farms, Pleasant Hill Farm and Moore Farms, were two of just three chosen west of Syracuse for protection. Before applying to the State program, Pleasant Hill and Moore Farms were identified by the Livingston County Farmland Protection Board as priority projects through a pre-selection process. Genesee Valley Conservancy then worked with the farm families to complete the applications for the State. Both farms play an important role in the regions conservation picture, adding to the existing farmland conserved by landowners and the Genesee Valley Conservancy in Livingston County. Moore Farms, a 475 acre cash crop

operation, has consistently incorporated conservation practices including extensive drain tiling, runoff diversions, crop rotations, and conservation tillage into their every day practices. The permanent conservation of this farm will also create a buffer for Beards Creek and Little Beards Creek, protecting the water and wildlife habitat. Pleasant Hill Farm, a 221 acre dairy operation located at the northern entrance to the Town of Geneseo, has been a Dairy of Distinction since 1996. The protection of this family owned and operated farm will add to the more than 5,600 acres already permanently protected by Genesee Valley Conservancy in

the Town of Geneseo. To date, Genesee Valley Conservancy has protected more than 4,400 acres of important agricultural land through this program. Farmers interested in this conservation program should contact the office to learn about the details and the timeline for the County’s pre-selection process. GVC

This story begins with the Indian Fort Nature Preserve and the abundance of buckthorn, a non-native invasive species, which is prevalent in many locations on the preserve. Over the years, the property has regenerated from grassland into a mature forest with many oak, maple, hickory, ash, cedar and other native trees. Yet some areas have become dominated by buckthorn, a large shrub with a wide spreading canopy which prevents native species from establishing themselves. Genesee Valley Conservancy staff with the expert assistance of Jim Engel of White Oak Nursery have been physically removing the buckthorn and planting species such as oak, dogwood, nannyberry and goldenrod to regenerate native species in these areas.

Typically only one out of a hundred planted acorns will succeed to tree stage. Where and how do we collect the thousands of acorns needed to successfully regenerate oak trees for a project like this?

That is where the many hands of the Geneseo Daisy Troop provided terrific assistance to the project. The girls searched for oak trees that were producing a fruit of acorns this year and began collecting, and collect they did! The girls of the Daisy Troop collected over 5,000 acorns for planting at the preserve. Not only did the girls do a fantastic service in collecting the acorns, they even tested them for germination by performing a floating trial. If the acorns float in water they are not viable for germination. If they sink, they are good. The fascination the girls learned, and one that we all value, is how one little acorn can grow into a magnificent oak tree. Thanks to community minded troop leaders like Kate Capel and Meghan Bucci, little girls can also grow. GVC

In 1993 the Genesee Valley Conservancy had not been established very long when Ted and I decided to look into what would be involved in granting an easement on our property. We liked what we heard and felt that a conservation easement would be a good thing for us. Preservation of the open space in the Genesee Valley was important to us. We had lived in the valley since the 1960’s and watched a great deal of development swallow up acres and acres of farmland. In the early days of the Conservancy the advisor urged keeping as many options open as possible. When deciding what conditions we wanted in place we tried to allow for future opportunities. At that time our son was a teenager. His future interest in our property could not be predicted. So we reserved one house lot, besides our homestead parcel. We allowed for this one other dwelling so our farm

could be split into two properties. Each would be sufficient for pasturing horses with enough additional land for hay or other uses. Our son could have his own place if he wanted, while we still lived in our home. Or later, if he inherited the farm, he could sell half if the whole farm was more than he wanted to manage.

Today, 20 years later, the situation has evolved in a very different direction from what

we originally were thinking. Our son has his own home elsewhere, is no longer fox hunting or riding horses, and will not want to live on our 100+ acre farm or even half of it. The reserved house lot is no longer desirable and eliminating it will mean one less house on Huston Road, preserving a little more open space in the community, forever. I asked the Conservancy to extinguish the reserved lot and add the land into the conservation area of the property. In my opinion that’s a very good thing. GVC

Ted & Sue Kinsey protected their farm in 1993, just the fourth

Conservancy project.

In 2014, Sue amended their easement to add 8 acres to

conservation, eliminating a reserved house site. This means

one less encroachment on the open spaces of the Genesee Valley.

The Oak Tree Half Marathon & 5k The 10th anniversary Oak Tree Race did not disappoint. A record 708 individuals crossed the finish line and helped raise a record $21,000 for Genesee Valley Conservancy’s conservation work! Thanks to the many sponsors that cover event expenses, entry fees for runners go straight toward funding future projects in the Genesee Valley. In addition to the record finishers and fund raising, a new course record was set for the half marathon by Kip Tisia (1:08:27). His blazing

time averaged to just 5:13 minutes per mile! Among the many other personal achievements and records that were accomplished, three individuals stood out. Bill Lofquist, Jeff Matthews, and Annette Brenner each finished their 10th Oak Tree Half Marathon in 2014 and are the only three runners to finish every Oak Tree Half Marathon since its inception. “It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world,” remarked Brenner. Lofquist shared her sentiment, adding “It’s a great course and a great

local event.” In addition to the sponsors recognized on page 7, there is a large number of volunteers that make this race possible. From registration and course setup, to water stations and road marshals, Genesee Valley Conservancy thanks everyone that has played a role in pulling this race off each of the past 10 years! We’re not done yet, the next Oak Tree will run September 6th, 2015. GVC
