THE SABBATH DAY Gen 2:2on the seventh day he [God]rested from all his work. 8. THE SABBATH DAY Genesis 2:1 Israels sabbath was notcelebrated on certain days of the month andwas not linked to the cycles of the moon or toany other cycle of nature; it was simplyobserved every seventh day. IVP Bible Background Commentary: Old Testament 9. THE SABBATH DAY Ex 20:8-11 "Remember the Sabbath day bykeeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor anddo all your work, 10 but the seventh day is aSabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shallnot do any work, neither you, nor your son ordaughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within yourgates. 11 For in six days the Lord made theheavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is inthem, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath dayand made it holy. 10. THE SABBATH DAY Ex 20:8 "Remember the Sabbath day[?] Dont forget what Im about to tell you aboutthe 7th. Day Or remember something you already knowabout from Gen. 2:2, &; Gen 4:3 In the course of time[Sabbath?]Cain brought [to a specifiedplace & time?] some of the fruits of the soilas an offering to the Lord. 11. THE SABBATH DAY Ex 20:8 "Remember the Sabbath day This word is only used 134 Xs in the NIV First used in Ex. 16:23 12. THE SABBATH DAY, A FEW IMPORTANT VERSES Matt 12:11."If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a piton the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? Matt 24:20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winteror on the Sabbath. Mark 2:27 Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was madefor man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man isLord even of the Sabbath." Acts 1:12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hillcalled the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath days walk from thecity. Col 2:16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by whatyou eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a NewMoon celebration or a Sabbath day. 13. THE SABBATH DAY Rom 14:5-10 One man considers one day moresacred than another; another man considers everyday alike. Each one should be fully convinced in hisown mind. 6 He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to theLord, for he gives thanks to God; and he whoabstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks toGod. 7 For none of us lives to himself alone and noneof us dies to himself alone. 8 If we live, we live to theLord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whetherwe live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 For this veryreason, Christ died and returned to life so that hemight be the Lord of both the dead and the living. 14. THE SABBATH DAY Rom 14:5-10 This would have been an ideal place for Pauland God to lay down all the rules andregulations for the New Covenant Sabbath ifthere was one. 15. THE SABBATH,F. W. ROBERTSON The Sabbath, originally instituted for man at his creation, is ofpermanent and universal obligation. The physical necessities of manrequire a Sabbath of rest. He is so constituted that his bodily welfareneeds at least one day in seven for rest from ordinary labour.Experience also proves that the moral and spiritual necessities ofmen also demand a Sabbath of rest. "I am more and more sure byexperience that the reason for the observance of the Sabbath liesdeep in the everlasting necessities of human nature, and that as longas man is man the blessedness of keeping it, not as a day of restonly, but as a day of spiritual rest, will never be annulled. I certainlydo feel by experience the eternal obligation, because of the eternalnecessity, of the Sabbath. The soul withers without it. It thrives inproportion to its observance. The Sabbath was made for man. Godmade it for men in a certain spiritual state because they needed it.The need, therefore, is deeply hidden in human nature. He who candispense with it must be holy and spiritual indeed. And he who, stillunholy and unspiritual, would yet dispense with it is a man that wouldfain be wiser than his Maker" (F. W. Robertson). 16. SABBATH IN ARCHEOLOGY The ancient Babylonian calendar, as seen fromrecently recovered inscriptions on the bricks amongthe ruins of the royal palace, was based on thedivision of time into weeks of seven days. TheSabbath is in these inscriptions designated Sabattu, and defined as "a day of rest for the heart" and "a dayof completion of labour. Eastons Bible Dictionary A day of completion of labour Do you feel a sense of accomplishment on Saturdaynight & look forward to Sunday? 17. SABBATH IN ARCHEOLOGY Archeology shows a 7 day week with theSabbath as "a day of rest . 18. IS THE SABBATH SUNDAY? The change of the day. Originally at creation the seventh day of theweek was set apart and consecrated as the Sabbath. The first day of theweek is now observed as the Sabbath. Has God authorized thischange? There is an obvious distinction between the Sabbath as aninstitution and the particular day set apart for its observance. Thequestion, therefore, as to the change of the day in no way affects theperpetual obligation of the Sabbath as an institution. Change of the dayor no change, the Sabbath remains as a sacred institution the same. Itcannot be abrogated. If any change of the day has been made, it must have been by Christ orby his authority. Christ has a right to make such a change (Mark 2:23-28). As Creator, Christ was the original Lord of the Sabbath (John 1:3;Heb 1:10). It was originally a memorial of creation. A work vastly greaterthan that of creation has now been accomplished by him, the work ofredemption. We would naturally expect just such a change as wouldmake the Sabbath a memorial of that greater work. Eastons Bible Dictionary 19. IS THE SABBATH SUNDAY?True, we can give no text authorizing the change in so many words. Wehave no express law declaring the change. But there are evidences ofanother kind. We know for a fact that the first day of the week has beenobserved from apostolic times, and the necessary conclusion is, that itwas observed by the apostles and their immediate disciples. This, wemay be sure, they never would have done without the permission or theauthority of their Lord. After his resurrection, which took place on the first day of the week (Matt28:1; Mark 16:2; Luke 24:1; John 20:1), we never find Christ meetingwith his disciples on the seventh day. But he specially honoured the firstday by manifesting himself to them on four separate occasions (Matt28:9; Luke 24:34,18-33; John 20:19-23). Again, on the next first day ofthe week, Jesus appeared to his disciples (John 20:26). Eastons Bible Dictionary 20. IS THE SABBATH SUNDAY? Some have calculated that Christs ascension tookplace on the first day of the week. And there can be nodoubt that the descent of the Holy Ghost at Pentecostwas on that day (Acts 2:1). Thus Christ appears asinstituting a new day to be observed by his people asthe Sabbath, a day to be henceforth known amongstthem as the "Lords day." The observance of this"Lords day" as the Sabbath was the general custom ofthe primitive churches, and must have had apostolicsanction (comp. Acts 20:3-7; 1 Cor 16:1,2) andauthority, and so the sanction and authority of JesusChrist. Eastons Bible Dictionary 21. WHY SUNDAY?Thetomb was found empty on Sunday; 22. WHY SUNDAY? Matt 28:1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the firstday of the week, Mary Magdalene and the otherMary went to look at the tomb. Mark 16:2-3 Very early on the first day of theweek, just after sunrise, they were on their way tothe tomb Luke 24:1-2 On the first day of the week, veryearly in the morning, the women took the spicesthey had prepared and went to the tomb. 23. WHY SUNDAY?Jesus repeatedly met with the gathered disciples on Sunday; 24. WHY SUNDAY? Matt 28:9 Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. Luke 24:36 While they were still talking about this, Jesushimself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be withyou." Luke 24:13-16 Now that same day two of them were going toa village called EmmausJesus himself came up and walkedalong with them John 20:26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked,Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be withyou! Acts 2:1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were alltogether in one place. 25. WHY SUNDAY?Werepeatedly see the gathered disciples meeting on Sunday; 26. WHY SUNDAY? Acts 20:7 On the first day of the week we cametogether to break bread. Paul spoke to the peopleand, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. 1 Cor 16:1-2 Now about the collection for Godspeople: Do what I told the Galatian churches todo. 2 On the first day of every week, each one ofyou should set aside a sum of money in keepingwith his income, saving it up, so that when I comeno collections will have to be made. 27. ... THE IMPORTANCE OF SABBATH REST Everybody needs a little rest every so often. 28. GEN 2:2B, GOD RESTED? Gen 2:2on the seventh day he [God]rested from all his work. Was God tired? God had brought His creating work tocompletion. 29. GOD RESTED Gen 2:2he [God] rested from all his work. OT:7673 shabath (shaw-bath); a primitive root;to repose, i.e. desist from exertion; used inmany implied relations (causative, figurative orspecific): KJV - (cause to, let, make to) cease, celebrate, cause (make) to fail, keep (sabbath), suffer tobe lacking, leave, put away (down), (make to)rest, rid, still, take away. 30. A SABBATH REST FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD Heb 4:8-11 For if Joshua had given themrest, God would not have spoken later aboutanother day. 9 There remains, then, aSabbath rest for the people of God; 10 foranyone who enters Gods rest also rests fromhis own work, just as God did from his. 11 Letus, therefore, make every effort to enter thatrest, so that no one will fall by following theirexample of disobedience. 31. A SABBATH REST FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD Heb 4:8-11 This would be another ideal place for God tolay down all the rules and regulations for theNew Covenant Sabbath. We didnt find them in Rom 14:5-10, or here,so where will we find them? Not anywhere in the N.T., but you will find itin the teachings of many N.T. Bible teachers. 32. THE LORD BLESSED THE SABBATH DAY The Lord would not have blessed theSabbath day unless it was completed. Gen 2:3because on it he rested [pasttense, not present, He is resting, Hebrewperfect tense] from all the work of creatingthat he had done. 33. Syntax is all the money collectedat church from sinners.IN CONCLUSION 34. THE END Its not the ship in the water but the water inthe ship that sinks it. So its not the Christianin the world but the world in the Christian thatconstitutes the danger. John Wilbur Chapman 35. ACTS AND FACTS, DR. LARRY VARDIMAN Mitochondrial DNA and a Recent Human Origin. A team of scientists that includes Dr. Daniel Criswell of ICR hascompleted a study of mitochondrial DNA presentingInternationalConference on Creationism the mitochondrion has its own small DNAmolecule and this DNA is passed down from mother to child. The studyhas revealed an unexpected lack of diversity within worldwide humanmitochondrial lineages, despite high mutation rates, and this supportsthe idea that humanity is only a few thousand years old. it contains several interesting tenets: 1) there was a single dispersal ofmankind with three main mitochondrial lineages interspersed withinclans; 2) the dispersion was centered in the Middle East in the recentpast; 3) the dispersion was essentially tribal in nature, with small groupspushing into previously uninhabited territory; and 4) genetic evidenceindicates that male lineages are much more geographically specific thanfemale lineages, with female migration rates up to eight times greaterthan males. This latter tenet is an expression of the Babel account inGenesis, where the initial, well-mixed population split up and migrated 36.
