ON THE COVER: SI’s Chamber Singers sang at St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican over the summer, accompanied by musical director Chad Zullinger and SI President Robert T. Walsh, S.J. ’68.
September 21, 2010
Dear Friends of St. Ignatius,
It IS wIth prIde and joy that I preSent you wIth our annual report for 2009-2010. over the years, Genesis V magazine has had some fantastic and eye-catching covers. This issue has one of the most spectacular ever. on june 19th, our Chamber Singers joined loyola Marymount university Chorus to sing at the Sunday Vigil Mass at St. peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The cover photo of Genesis V shows the very part of the immense St. peter’s where our students sang, facing the holy Spirit window and Bernini’s magnificent sculpture of The Chair of St. Peter that honors the apostle peter. The west nave was packed for the Mass, and all of us gathered there were treated to a gift of exquisite music, lifting the heart and soul as we praised and thanked God. This rare honor for our singers, chosen to sing Mass in St. peter’s, showcased the talents of St. Ignatius students half a world away from where they usually sing.
This is part of SI’s story during this past year, and it is shared by so many other Ignatians who can’t carry a tune, sing a song or have never taken a step in ancient rome. In a variety of activities, athletics, academic pursuits, spiritual endeavors and community service work, the students of St. Ignatius are engaged in excellence and generously give of themselves to create a better world. They do it here on campus, around the City and throughout the Bay area. They go on to shine in colleges coast to coast not only because of what they do but also because of who they are. The audiences who heard our singers marveled that they were so young and their music so excellent. It is much the same for all our students and alumni. It is a marvel they are such good men and women—men and women for others.
Thank you for all that you have done in this past year to help our students develop their talents and receive a jesuit education. They would not be who they are today without your help, donations and support. on their behalf, I thank you with all my heart. when our Chamber Singers joined me for a visit to the jesuit mother church, La Chiesa del Gesu, we went to the rooms of St. Ignatius. In the room where Ignatius died, which is now a chapel, we prayed Ignatius’s prayer of Generosity for you, our benefactors. our guide, a Spanish jesuit, was wide-eyed that our students knew Ignatius’s prayer from memory. More than 460 years later and in a place that didn’t even exist when he was alive, the spirit of Ignatius of loyola is vibrant. I thank God for this animating spirit as I thank God for you. I especially thank you for helping the 310 students—one out of every five at SI—who received financial aid this past year. They would not have been at SI without you. May you have a sense of satisfaction and joy that you are making great things happen for the greater glory of God—a.M.d.G!
Gratefully yours in the lord,
robert t. walsh, S.j. ’68

We especially thank the following lifetime friends who have made provisions in their estate
plans—bequests, charitable trusts, gifts of life insurance or retirement funds—to support SI’s
Endowment Fund. Such gifts provide for the long-term welfare of SI and may also
provide donors with valuable tax and income benefits during their lifetime.
The forethought and generosity of the following is most appreciated.

THE SI CHAMBEr SINGErS SPENT TWO WEEKS in june retracing the steps of St. Ignatius of loyola, performing in venues in Spain and rome. The group nicknamed their trip the “tomb to womb” tour, as it took them from Ignatius’ tomb in the Church of the Gesu in rome to his birthplace at Spain’s loyola Castle. In May 2009, dr. Mary Breden, director of choral activities at loyola Marymount university, invited the SI students and their director, Chad Zullinger, to perform with the lMu choir in rome. The two choirs first met in February 2009 when dr. Breden brought her singers to SI. Zullinger took his group to los angeles the following april for a choral clinic, cementing the relationship. Zullinger wanted the europe experience to be more than just a chance for his students to sing in impressive venues. The first day he was hired at SI, he saw a video of the life of St. Ignatius produced by former faculty member paul hanley ’63. “The day I saw that video, I told paul that if I ever led a choir tour in europe, I would love for him to accompany us and teach students about the saint whose life had inspired the founding of our school.” Shortly after the students arrived in rome, they gave an impromptu performance at the pantheon and then sang with the lMu Concert Choir and the Monte Vista Christian
School Chamber Singers from watsonville at St. peter’s Basilica. They sang again at St. agnes in the piazza navona and at Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, where their performance was met with acclaim from the audience. The students offered another impromptu concert at the Gesu, where SI president robert walsh ’68 S.j., and hanley gave the students a tour and explained the jesuit paintings and icons. along with Br. douglas draper, S.j., they also toured the rooms adjacent to the Gesu, where Ignatius met with visitors and in which he died. In Spain, students performed in Barcelona at the Collegi St. Ignasi-Sarrià, where they sang for the student body, and at Sant estanislao de Koskta, where they performed in a shared concert. In Manresa, SI students sang at the la Cova de Sant Ignasi, near the cave where Ignatius wrote the Spiritual exercises. “This was a dimly lit, holy place, where students made their way in and had a chance to take in the experience,” said Zullinger. “after dinner, the group, hand in hand, walked down the side of the jesuit retreat Center to the river Cardoner singing ‘Shall we Gather at the river’ just as the sun was setting. It was amazing to do this just a few feet away from where Ignatius’ journey had begun and where he had his inspiration to begin what we now refer to as the Spiritual exercises.”
at Monserrat, the students visited the shrine of the Black Madonna, where Ignatius gave up his sword. at loyola, they visited Ignatius’ home and performed at the Santuario de loyola Basilica, dedicating their performance to the memory of jill Costello ’06, who had died a few days previous after a long struggle with lung cancer. prior to the performance, they had dinner with 85 students from Spanish jesuit schools and sang for them during their prayer service. Students who attended included taylor light, amelia rudnicki, Sarah Stricker, elizabeth Skewes-Cox, Victoria harrell, juliet Knox, andrea Struve, emma Bacchini, Mira Bollman, elise Go, deanna Beaman, lauren Murray, Madeline Sinks, Mickey Boxell, nathaniel nunez, will Kircher, jackson Foster, jihoon park, tim Green, alex hirota, Keith Berquist, Karim dudum and robby lucchesi. Chaperones included paul hanley, Michael and anne Stricker, angela Chang and Sue and alia dudum ’05. Zullinger hopes to offer the same tour in the future, perhaps once every three or four years. “already, we travel about five or six times a year, performing at choral festivals and exchange concerts from the Bay area to Southern California. now my hope is that any student in the choir program has at least one opportunity to sing internationally while at SI.” S

In Memoriam: Dan Linehan ’83Alumni Board Officer
DAN LINEHAN ’83, ONE OF THE MOST ACTIVE board members of the SI alumni association, died aug. 10 due to complications following back surgery. he was 44. For years, dan had chaired the SI all-Class reunion and had been a regular at nearly every alumni function the school offered. “dan was the central figure on our board and is the reason why the Class of
’83 is so strong,” said alumni director john ring ’86. “he inspired the entire alumni Board with his hard work and dedication. he was brilliant at all he did, from running our events to volunteering at St. Stephen’s and being attentive to his family as a loving father and husband. he was a man for others in every way.” after graduating from St. Gabriel’s School, dan attended SI where he served as quarterback on the football team. he graduated from uSF and worked in investments, first with Merrill lynch Investment Services, then with united asset Management and finally with nuveen Investments as national sales manager. “dan had a unique gift of welcoming and inviting people into his circle and making them feel part of something bigger,” added Vice president for development joe Vollert ’84. “he shined at the dinner table, where he loved to host friends, family and colleagues, and he did so much for all the organizations he served.” Those organizations included St. Stephen’s Church, where he served on the Finance Council and Men’s Club, the olympic Club and the Knights of Malta, with whom he would regularly travel to lourdes accompanying the Malades. he also volunteered at St. anne’s home with the little Sisters of the poor.
dan was preceded in death by his brother, patrick ’76, and father, Christie. he is survived by his wife, diane (Murray); by their children, Siobhan, patrick and Molly; by his mother, rose linehan; by his sister, Theresa Spirz (Carl); and by many other relatives, in-laws, nieces and nephews. dan’s funeral Mass filled St. Ignatius Church aug. 16, and a reception followed at SI’s McCullough Gymnasium that lasted well into the night, a testament to how many people loved and respected this great man. “dan was more than just a board member,” said SI alumni association president jeff Columbini ’79. “he was family.” dan’s classmate joe McCarthy ’83, delivered a eulogy in which he praised his friend for acting “as the centerpiece and binding force between diverse groups of friends. we saw the grace with which he bore the death of his brother and his father and how he worshipped his mother. we saw the special relationship he had with his sister that often played like improv comedy. we saw how devoted he was to his children and how he could never say no to them. and it was utterly, utterly impossible not to see the love he had for his partner and soul mate of nearly 30 years.” dan’s family invites anyone interested in honoring his legacy to donate to the daniel j. linehan Scholarship Fund at SI. S
Kendra Fallon ’09 Dies in Plane Crash in NepalKENDrA FALLON ’09, WHO WAS SET TO BEGIN her sophomore year at uC San diego as an environmental systems major, died in a plane crash in nepal aug. 24. She was 18. Kendra had been working in nepal teaching at two orphanages and was en route to lukla to hike to the base camp of Mt. everest at 18,000 feet when her plane crashed, killing all 14 on board. She spent the summer in nepal in part to honor the memory of her mother, julee pygin, who had died less than two years ago from cancer and who had spent time in nepal as a young woman. as a student at SI, Kendra devoted herself to healing the planet and to working for peace. She served as president of both the amnesty International Club and the environmental Club and was a member of the arab-jewish dialogue Club and the Social justice Club. In addition, she led a senior Kairos retreat and was a finalist in the freshman oratorical contest. She was also a talented athlete and a two-year member of both the jV softball and cross country teams at SI and a member of her club softball and soccer teams. “She went to nepal to seek healing from the trauma of losing her mother,” said her sister,
Shane ’06, who graduated this September from uC San diego. “She didn’t want to sit around and feel depressed. She was a brave woman, just like my mother, and a pioneer in her own right. She was extraordinarily intelligent and confident and believed she could change the world.” her close friend and classmate adrienne arnold ’09 also noted that “if Kendra had the opportunity to help someone, she would do so. when she spoke, you knew that she meant what she said. For the oratorical contest, she spoke about her decision to become a vegetarian, and you knew it wasn’t a fad for her but something she believed in whole-heartedly. In her own quiet way, she commanded attention and respect.” Mary Switzer haardt, who served as Kendra’s moderator for amnesty International, noted that Kendra “was passionate about human rights issues around the world and dedicated her time to educating herself and others about them. She organized lunchtime meetings to show and discuss the documentary Promises, which followed the lives of two groups of palestinian and Israeli children and their eventual meeting. Kendra helped students to see the human side of the palestinian-Israeli conflict. She never preached; she was interested in authentic dialogue about issues and showed deep respect for others’ opinions.”
SI principal patrick ruff called Kendra “a person who put her faith into action. She was a living testament to our school’s desire to educate the whole person. along with her family, we mourn the loss of this remarkable young woman.” howard Fallon, Kendra’s father, is planning a service during the Thanksgiving holidays so that Kendra’s SI classmates can attend. Go to www.siprep.org/alumni for the time and location of the service. S
