FROMTHEAUTHOR 

We hope this will be an exciting and fun-lled Warhammer 40,000 supplement. The Genestealer Cult has been with us from as far back as Rogue Trader in the late 1980s. Back then, we had no idea of theconnections between the utterly alien Genestealers and the Tyranid Hiveeets; one of the greatest “unveilings” Games Workshop has ever pulled off in the history of Warhammer 40,000. The list however has stuck with usand stayed in a nice warm part of our hearts.

The Cult list saw several iterations over the years,starting with a couple of simple lists back in Rogue Trader (including a Chaos-infused Genestealer Cult variant, noless) and an update in the Citadel Journal many yearslater during 3rd Edition. The list saw its golden era duringthe days of Space Hulk and its expansion packs, and it seemed back then that everyone and their brother had abagful of Genestealers and Hybrids.

This list is an effort to refresh the Genestealer Cult for the rst time since its link to the Tyranid Hiveeets wasestablished, and to bring it forward into the “present” of Warhammer 40,000. The army has been updated and brought into the “new-style” codex layout.

The list hopes to get your creative juices owing and allow a set of enthusiast gamers and modelers a chanceto dive into fun games with a host of exotic, but very familiar (and probably dusty), units.

It is a labor of love and I sincerely hope you have a great time taking the Genestealer Cult out for a spin.

WHYCOLLECTAGENESTEALERCULT?

At the end of the day, the Genestealer Cult is an army fortrue believers. If you are looking for whiz-bang weapons,ceramite encased warriors or unstoppable tanks, you’vefound the wrong list. If however you have a bent towardsthe subversive, if you root for the underdog, or if you just want to show the Imperium what a band of ragingfanatics backed up by their scheming masters can do,then look no further.

The Genestealer Cult is a list that combines some of the

cheapest, lowest quality units in the game with someaggressive elites and heavy support choices. It is an armythat can be built in a great variety of ways and is a blastto play. As the Orks say; “If you win, you win and if youlose, it don’t count”...as you can always try, try again.

HOWTHISMINI-DEXWORKS

This mini-dex is split into three main sections that dealwith different aspects of the army.

ChildrenoftheGreatFather: This section goes overthe background of Genestealer Cults, how they areformed, and how they ght. It describes the lifecycle

of the cult from initial infection all the way through toplanetary uprisings and assimilation by the TyranidHiveeets.

HobbySection: This section shows the cult in action onthe tabletop with an emphasis on painting and modelingthe army.

GenestealerCultArmyList: This section covers thespecial rules and wargear available to the army andpresents each unit arranged so you can easily choosean army for your games. A Force Organization chart islisted along with the point values of each unit so armyconstruction can be done easily.

GENESTEALERSPASTANDPRESENT

The genestealers were once thought to be a race of xenoswho sought to conquer the Imperium from within. Theyinltrate planets then infect citizens with their genetic

material, causing their children to be born genestealer-human hybrids. A genestealer and its victims form asecret cult on these planets. The creature’s monstrousprogeny mature in safety and secrecy until they are ina position to challenge the planet’s rulers. These “cults” seek to gain control over the host planet subtly, throughhidden manipulation of the populace and subversion of the planetary government. They can put a potent forceinto battle if threatened.

The actual truth is even more horric. The genestealer isnot the source of the problem facing an infected Imperialworld, but only a harbinger. They are Tyranid seedingand inltration organisms who range far aeld fromthe Hiveeets seeking out new feeding grounds. Oncegenestealers have established a strong cult of infectedfollowers on a world, it is only a matter of time beforethey attract the notice of their masters and a full Tyranidinvasion is on the way.

GENESTEALERREPRODUCTIONCYCLE

The genestealers method of reproduction is as alienas their appearance. As with other Tyranid organisms,there are no male or female genestealers. They do notmate with each other and do not bear their own young.Instead, genestealers infect members of other races withtheir genetic material.

Genestealers are equipped with oviposters, or egg-layers,in their tongues. They have the ability to mesmerise theirvictims with their gaze, in much the way some predatorscan paralyse their prey with terror. Once the victim issubdued, the genestealer pierces the victim’s skin with itstongue and deposits an “egg” in the soft tissue beneath.

This egg never hatches - in fact, “egg” is something of a misnomer; it is more correctly considered a Tyranidcancer. When implanted, the Tyranid DNA begins toalter the host’s genetic structure, cell by cell, organby organ, wreaking particular damage to the victim’sreproductive system. The victim shows no outwardsign of the infection. To the contrary, they gain some

of the genestealer’s remarkable strength, resilienceand longevity, becoming healthier than ever before.The damage however is horribly evident in the victim’schildren.

When a victim infected by a genestealer mates,his offspring are hybrids - part host organism, partgenestealer - with the genestealer traits predominate.Once mature, these hybrids infect other victims. Theirchildren are also hybrids, though they look more like thenormal host organism; humans for the Imperium, butorkoid and other xenos examples have been seen.

The most horrifying aspect of the genestealerreproductive cycle is that the hosts appear not to noticeor care that their children are monsters. The parentslove and cherish their twisted hybrid children, above andbeyond even normal parental affection. Whether thisis because of some power of the child or because theparents are dominated by the latent power of the TyranidHivemind is unknown.

Once the genestealers begin to inltrate and infect anew world, its days are numbered. A single genestealercan infect hundreds and their hybrid children caninfect millions. Unless the infection is spotted early andruthlessly countered by Imperial authorities, in a shortspan of decades the original culture is all but extinct. Thismakes the genestealer cults terrible, implacable enemiesto the Imperium of Man, as even a single creature leftunchecked can threaten an entire world.

GENESTEALERSANDTECHNOLOGY

Though equipped with exible, sensitive hands,purestrain genestealers are mentally incapable of usingeven the simplest of tools and weapons. The concept of manipulating their environment through tools is aliento their Tyranid psychology and they are not able tocomprehend the workings of the lance or the bolter. Thisis extremely fortunate for their enemies, for in everyother way they are deadly warriors.

Their hybrid children however are not so limited. The rstgeneration tends to have the same mental shortcomingsas purestrains, but further generations - where thehost creature’s genes apparently have more inuence -

gain some ability with tools and weapons. Though nottechnological innovators, these later hybrids can useequipment designed and built by others.

The cycle of infection continues until about the fourthgeneration, when the hybrids are all but indistinguishablefrom the original host creatures. The fourth generationhybrids have no oviposters and mate in the normal hostorganism’s fashion, but they may spawn host creatures,hybrids, or purestrain genestealers seemingly at will.

SPACEHULKS

Space hulks are massive, derelict vessels, locked in

a strange, eternal voyage through the Warp. Thesemysterious vessels appear rarely in Imperial space andthey can bring either great wealth or havoc to those whohappen upon them.

It is known that there are currents and eddies in theWarp, which can trap a vessel in warpspace forever orturn it from its course and deposit it back in realspacelight years - or centuries - from its intended destination.

Space hulks suffer an even worse fate. They have beenwrenched from their course and drift helplessly throughthe Warp, travelling wherever the currents take them.They may remain locked in Warpspace for centuries, or

drop back into realspace minutes after entering the Warp.

It is impossible to determine where or when (or if) ahulk will return to real space and even astropaths nd itdifcult to predict a hulk’s movements. Once the hulk isreturned to realspace, it is not free. Minutes, hours, daysor years later it may be sucked back into the Warp, toendure another uncertain, endless voyage.

There appears to be a pattern to the movement of spacehulks and periodically, two or more appear in real spaceat the same place and time. If one is empty and deadand the other inhabited, the crew of the inhabited vesselscavenges the other for metal, energy and spare parts,seeking to repair their own dying ship or expand theirliving space by binding the two vessels together. Over themillennia, the patchwork constructs attain colossal size.

It is impossible to predict when a hulk will re-enterthe Warp, so anyone who boards them risks eternalemprisonment. However, many are willing to take therisk. Some hulks have been in existence since the DarkAge of Technology or even earlier. Though their originalinhabitants are long dead, these vessels are treasuretroves of lost technology, containing secrets which couldbring unimaginable wealth to those who dare plunderthem.

INITIALINFECTION

The Tyranid Hiveeets use space hulks to their advantagein their tireless onslaughts of consumption. They boardany which cross their path, seeding them with Tyranidinltration organisms. If the space hulk is abandoned, theseeding creatures enter a state of hibernation. If thereare survivors trapped onboard the hulk, they are infectedand the most powerful members of the new cult placedinto whatever protective environs are available.

Once the seeding is complete, the Hiveeet moves on.The genestealers sleep and the hulk continues on itseternal voyage. Though it may take centuries, inevitablysome day the space hulk will reappear in populatedspace. It will be discovered and boarded by foolhardytreasure-hunters.

When the space hulk is boarded, psychic triggers awakenthe sleeping genestealers. The boarding party is attacked,infected and released. Several genestealers accompanythe party back to their ship, infect the ship’s crew as welland then hide themselves in the ship’s cargoholds.

Psychically controlled by the genestealers, the ship’s crew

will not recall the attack and are not aware that they havebeen infected or that they are carrying their masters intheir holds. When the ship reaches a populated planet oroutpost, an implanted crewman disembarks, accompaniedby a single genestealer. The vessel now becomes aTyranid plague carrier, bringing its cargo of infection anddespair to each planet it visits.

Once on the planet, the genestealer goes into hidingand the crewman under his control begins to form agenestealer cult.

GENESTEALERCULTGROWTH

There are many cults scattered throughout the ImperiumIn a time where psykers are emerging with increasingfrequency, when the Ruinous Powers and xenos stalkthe galaxy and the Inquisition ruthlessly suppress allknowledge of these things, it is inevitable that the young,foolish or ambitious will seek this knowledge on theirown. Such people often form religions, secret societies orhidden cults where they can experiment, plot or worshipfar from the prying eyes of the Imperial authorities.

Most of these cults are harmless, run by religiouscharlatans but some are more sinister. It is estimatedthat there are tens of millions of such cults scatteredthroughout the Imperium, with many dedicated to itsdestruction, including genestealer cults.

When they arrive on a human planet, the genestealerand its human thrall ee as far away as possible fromcivilization, settling in the most remote part of the planet.They travel either in the deep wilderness or in the bowelsof an abandoned inner city or hive. The genestealerbegins to prey on the humans around him and those heinfects join the cult. The rst generation hybrid childrenof the infected humans are well hidden from prying eyes.

A genestealer cult usually masquerades as a new religionwith the original human thrall as titular head. In outwardappearance the religion is completely harmless and oftenlaudable promoting hard work, cherishing the young andrespecting the old and encouraging extreme modesty.Most of the cult’s priests and priestesses go aboutcompletely robed at all times. The religious messageis simple, usually foretelling the coming arrival of theBlessed Children or the Great Father, who will lead theirfollowers to eternal bliss.

As it grows in power and inuence, the religion attracts

converts who have no idea of the sinister cult hidingbehind it. Eventually, these dupes are initiated into thedeeper mysteries of the faith - and infected themselves.

Though genestealers are driven by a ferocious andinstinctual need to infect victims to ensure the survivalof their Tyranid sub-species, the original purestrain - nowknown as a Patriarch - restrains itself and its progenyfrom infecting too many humans too fast, recognizingthat the religion’s rapid growth will arouse the suspicionof Imperial authorities.

Years pass and eventually the third and fourth generationhybrids are born. Some are virtually indistinguishable

from untainted humans. It is at this point that the cultbegins to spread its power across the planet. The titularhead of the religion, the original crewmember infectedby the Patriarch, is removed and his place is taken by afourth generation hybrid. The hybrid, having some of thePatriarch’s psychic powers, literally mesmerises thosewho see him, gaining new and more powerful membersfor the cult.

Other fourth generation hybrids leave the close protectionof the cult, masquerading as diplomats, religiousmissionaries, merchants or other travelers, and spreadthe infection across the planet. These hyprids often gainaccess to a planet’s ruling class and military leadership.

HIVEFLEETINVASION

Once a new generation of Purestrains has grown tomaturity, in the fth generation, the brood-cycle is almostcomplete. It is now time for the Patriarch to call out tohis Tyranid masters. By now ancient and hugely bloatedin both size and psychic power, the Patriarch retreats toa secure location and enters into a long trancelike state.During this time, the creature is focusing the latentpsychic power of all the cult followers, hybrids and otherpurestrain genestealers into a psychic beacon visible tothe Hiveeets. As the power of the beacon is based onthe size of the cult, the Hiveeets will respond by movingtowards the worlds with the most powerful cults thatrepresent the richest food source.

As the Hiveeets approach, they send forward a newwave of seeding creatures to explore the new world.The cult itself reaches a crescendo of activity. They riseup and overthrow whatever remnants of authority mayremain and the Magus instills a rapturous joy and senseof wonder into his ock as they foretell of the “BlessedChildren” returning to meet their Parents. ScatteredImperial astropathic fragments from such overrunworlds describe millions of infected cult members gladlymarching into the Tyranid feeding pools to be brokendown into raw DNA for their masters. None are sparedand at last even the Magus and Patriarch are consumedas the Hiveeet strips the world to its mineral core andmoves on toward new feeding grounds.

GENESTEALERCULTSINBATTLE

Close combat is at the heart of a genestealer cult’s battletactic - a massive wave assault of genestealers, hybridsand human fanatics. If the attackers reach the enemy’sposition, the enemy is almost certainly doomed.

In battle, the cult is led by its Magus - a fourth generation

hybrid who is the gurehead leader of the cult. ThePatriarch continues to advise the Magus, but it leavesthe actual generalship to someone who is better able tounderstand the opponent’s weaponry.

The Magus and Patriarch are accompanied by the coreof the cult, the coven, containing most of the earlygeneration hybrids and a small number of purestraingenestealers recently born. The coven takes no partin the early stages of the battle, merely directing theother troops, providing a rallying point and awaiting themoment to spring.

The cult won’t have a good deal of ranged weaponry at

its disposal - the brood members are indifferent to suchthings and they are often difcult for any but legitimatemilitary forces to attain. Whatever ranged weaponsthe cult has are concentrated in small coven units. Onoccasion the Genestealer Cult have inltrated the planet’sPDF forces and may have access to a small core of highquality military forces.

The bulk of the cult’s fanatic members are provided withclose assault weapons – hold out pistols if available,rocks, clubs, swords, and the like. Forming up in massivewaves, they rush out onto the eld, screaming wildly,ring indiscriminately and waving the cult’s battle banner.This has two purposes: to work them up into an even

greater frenzy and to frighten and demoralize the enemy.

When the enemy is demoralized or the battle hangs inthe balance, the coven itself enters the fray. Movingclose behind the fanatical mobs, drawing protection fromenemy re by the seething mass of frenzied Cult Initiatesand Brood Brothers, the Magus, the Patriarch and thecoven move in for the kill, ripping their opponents apartin an orgy of blood and destruction.

Of course, specic details vary from battle to battle. Thecult may have formal militry troops from infected PDFforces. Other Tyranid seeding organisms such as lictorsmay be in the vicinity, particularly in the later stages of cult activity when they have attracted the attention of the roaming Hiveeets. If the cult has been discoveredearly in its life-cycle it may little to offer but hordes of fanatics and early-generation hybrids. Whatever thecircumstances, the overall tactics remain the same: get inclose and tear the enemy apart.

Origins of the DeathwingThe Dark Angels Space Marine Chapter recruits from

hundreds of worlds scattered about the Imperium. Theirmobile base, The Rock will return to each of these worlds

every few centuries to recruit a new wave of initiates.

Millenia ago, the First Company returned to their originalhomeworld to discover it had been desecrated and their

nomadic people enslaved by a massive Genestealer Cult thathad crash-landed on the primitive world decades earlier.

Cut off from thier Chapter, the Dark Angel veteransdecided to stand against this outrage and attempt to save

their people. They painted their Terminator suits white inthe funerary tradition of their nomadic people, knowing

that few if any of them would return from this last task, andgrimly marched to war.

Years later, The Rock returned from a long campaign tofind a handful of their surviving veterans serving as triballeaders for the world's fully restored culture. The FirstCompany had purged every last taint of the Genestealer

Cult from the world.

To this day the Dark Angels have kept their Terminatorsuits white in honor of their brother's noble sacrifice.

Brother ChavilBrother Chavil is perhaps the most notorius Genestealer

Magus known to the Inquisition. An individual of stunning

charisma and charm, Chavil not only sought out highranking officials to convert into his Coven, he slowly and

patiently wormed his way into the ranks of the Ministorum.

Safely esconced in his high office, Chavil began a subtlewar of words upon the loyal ruling family of his world ofAdelphis IV. In time his words had spread far and wide,

and resulted in a false War of Faith being called uponthe planet's leaders. Taking this opportunity, Chavil's

Genestealer Cult rose up in a planetary-wide revolution thatthrew Adelphis IV into utter chaos.

Such was his power, that even some forces of the AdeptusSororitus fought in his name, and Brother Chavil was only

discovered when reports of Genestealer attacks upon thenoble family could no longer be covered up.

With righteous fury, the Ministorum forces onworlddestroyed his cult in a vicous yearlong purge, but Chavil

himself was never found.

The Arbitrators marched down the hallway, las-pistol fire bouncing off of their polished carapace breastplates.Their Proctor took aim carefully and with practiced motions emptied his bolter into the monstrous genestealer

before him.

The creature slumped, causing two nearby cultists to turn in horror. They looked on in disbelief at the brokenform of their grandfather, bleeding heavily from the ragged holes in its chitin. Their tears welled up as they fell

to their knees beside him, gently taking his claws as they felt his life slipping away.

As they embraced the dying genestealer, their grief turned to anger. They spun suddenly and faced the Arbitratorswho stood and watched with amazement. The pair struck suddenly, slipping their knives into the neck of the

nearby Arbites Proctor.

They must make their grandfather proud of them...

ARMYSPECIALRULESBlessedbetheFather: Any Genestealer Cult unitswithin 12” of a Patriarch or Magus may use theirLeadership when making Leadership or Morale tests(except Psychic Tests).

TheFatherhasFallen:The loss of the GenestealerCult’s leader is an almost unimaginable concept for cultfollowers. As they are unshakable when defending theirmasters, a leaderless cult quickly loses focus and fallsinto disarray. All Genestealer Cult units in an army whichhas lost all of its Patriarchs and Magi are at -1 Ld for therest of the game.

UNITSPECIALRULESLivetoFight. Cult Leaders have a strong sense of self-preservation. At the beginning of the Leader’s movementphase, and for his Movement phase only, the model isnot considered locked in close combat. This means thathe can move normally; leaving an ongoing close combat,

ignoring any units with which he was engaged. A Leadermay not assault on the turn he uses the Live to Fight ability.

Devoted: The elite forces of a Genestealer Cult surroundtheir masters, and willingly lay down their lives to defendthem. If a Patriarch or Magus suffers a wound from anysource, he may allocate that wound to any model within6” with the Devoted rule. The wound is allocated beforesaving throws are attempted.

CivilianVehicle: Genestealer Cult members use easilydisguised civilian vehicles. To represent this, the vehicleor unit may always be deployed at the start of the battle,

even in scenarios where they could not normally bedeployed. For example, in a mission with the Dawn of War deployment, the vehicle or unit could always setup atthe start of the battle instead of being placed in Reserve.Civilian Vehicle models destroyed for any reason areremoved from the tabletop due to their light construction.

This Psychic power is used at the start of either player’s

Assault phase. If successful, the Patriarch counts as beingequipped with defensive grenades, and any enemy modelin base contact with the Patriarch ght with one lessattack for the duration of the Assault phase.

VoiceofReason. A Genestealer Magus is unnaturallycharismatic. They are able to lull almost anyone into afalse sense of security by focusing their potent psychic

abilities into their voice.

Voice of Reason is a Psychic power used at the start of Magus’ turn. Select any single enemy unit within 12” and in line of sight. If the psychic test is passed, bothplayers roll a D6 and add the highest Leadership of theirrespective models. If the Magus’ total is equal or higherthan the target squad, they must Go To Ground until thebeginning of the Genestealer Cult player’s next turn. TheMagus may not use this power against a unit engaged inclose combat.

WARGEAR SatchelCharge. Trusted cult members often strap

improvised explosives to their bodies and hurl themselvesat close-by enemies. These unstable home-made devicesare as much a threat to the cult as to its foes.

A satchel charge may be used in the shooting phaseinstead of ring a ranged weapon or the assault phaseinstead of attacking. If used in close combat, the satchelcharge is resolved at an effective Initiative of 5. Placethe 3” Blast template anywhere in contact with themodel using the satchel charge. All models, friend orfoe, touched by the template suffer a S7 AP3 hit. Oncethe results are determined the model using the satchelcharge is automatically removed as a casualty.

If used by a model in close combat, any wounds inictedby the satchel charge count toward the combat result.

If a model carrying a satchel charge is killed before usingit, it explodes on a 4+. Center the blast on the deadmodel and resolve it as above.

CultMortar. A heavy but simple improvised mortar isoften mounted in cult vehicles. It packs a potent warheadbut has poor range.

Secret Terror: Seeding Lictors operate far ahead of the Hive-eets and must survive unsupported for extended  periods of time. They have adapted to their solitary role by enhancing their already formidable stealth and mimicingskills at the expense of raw brute force and thick chitin. Seeding Lictors deploy using the Reserves rule individually,to represent them leaping out from concealment amidst unwary enemies. They must each be placed anywhere on thetabletop (but not in impassible terrain or within 1” of an enemy model). The Seeding Lictor is not deployed using the

Deep Strike rules and does not scatter. Just place the model where you want it. A Seeding Lictor may not move, but may Run and Assault the turn it Reserves in.

The Beast of BarriaUpon the feral world of Barria, far in the Ultima Segmuntum a Genestealer Cult was rooted out by Ordo Hereticus

Inquisitor Georges Kuster. Kuster and his retinue sent out priority requests for assistance and moved to cut out the heartof the Coven personally. His entourage was never heard from again.

In time, the Space Sharks Space Marine Chapter arrived to answer the Inquisitor's call and began immediate combatoperations. After a grueling four-week purge, the Chapter had isolated the Patriarch, and launched a Terminator assault

on its position. The so called "Beast of Barria" was not easily felled. With its cult already dead it lashed out in an orgy ofmonstrous self-destruction, laying low over two thirds of the Space Shark's 1st Company and their Chief Librarian before

being put to the torch.

It is a blow to the Chapter that will be slow to heal.

Bloodhound: Seygle has hunted Genestealer Cults for decades. She can detect their forces with uncanny ability,and roots them out from their hidden enclaves mercilessly. As a result, Seeding Lictors lose their Mimic ability and Genestealer Cult vehicles lose their Civilian Vehicle ability. For each inltrating or outanking unit, roll a D6. On a 4+the unit loses the ability.

Doom of the Great Father: A veteran of the purging of Barria, Kundera enacts his vengeance on the Genestealer Cults ruthlessly. A squad led by Kundera gains Furious Charge and Preferred Enemy (Genestealer Cults).

Hellfre: Kundera is a fanatical destroyer of Genestealer Cult uprisings and equips his men accordingly. All heavy bolters in an army led by Kundera may additionally re Hellre rounds.

This ammo uses the following prole: R:36” S:X AP:4 Heavy 1, Blast, Poison (2+)

A Space Marine army may include Kundera. If you decide to take him, hecounts as the army’s HQ choice.

An Imperial army may include Seygle. If you decide to take her, she counts as

SPECIAL RULES:

“Watch for Civies”: All formation infantry units gain a 5+ cover

save on turn one. Cult vehicles cannot be selected as targets on

turn one unless they move, fire or no other target is in line of sight.

 Jammers: The formation gains the Jammers strategic asset.

Genestealer Cults are among the most insidious threats to the

Imperium. These secret covens spread their combination of false

belief and Tyranid infection throughout a world’s society, subverting

it completely in mere decades. It is only through the unwavering

vigilance of both the Inquisition and the Ministorum that the

majority of these cults are uncovered and destroyed in brutal purges.

Once rooted out and brought to battle, a Genestealer Cult is a terrible

foe. Led by their Patriarch and Magus leaders, hundreds of the infected

followers take to the streets. The Cult throws itself at opponents in a

mass of mob violence, backed up by the Cult’s inner coven of Hybrids a

Genestealers. Their enemy are often caught up in the sudden and chao

civilian violence and find themselves surrounded and overrun by the

seething masses.
