A Few Words... The GENETRUST partners enthusiastically present to you our 2014 Sire Directory. We are encouraged by the progress we see in consistency, lower BW with increased performance, carcass merit and disposition in each new generation of sires that become available. Through this directory we have given our honest evaluation of each sire--what we see as their strengths and weaknesses and how they best fit into breeding plans for future improvement. I first became involved with the Brangus breed in 1980 and am amazed at the progress the breed has made in those 34 years and especially the number and quality of sires that are currently available through AI that were not readily accessible 34 years ago.

However, the most disconcerting aspect of this whole process is that we are not registering any higher percentage of AI calves within this breed than we did in 1980. I do also have to keep reminding myself that AI is old hat to me as I have been involved with large scale AI programs since the early 60’s. At that time we had no synchronization programs it simply required daylight to dark commitment for 30 to 40 days by a dedicated group of employees to make it work. Today with the excellent synchronization programs available it is hard for me to fathom why you could not make AI work. We, as stockmen, make decisions every day as to tools to invest in that can bring more efficiency and profitability to our operation--from tractors, swathers, balers, trailers, pickups, ATV’s etc. I would challenge anyone to show me a better return on investment than you can receive through AI. Our data shows that for the approximately $60 to $70 per head cost of semen, synchronization, and labor in a registered program that the return on investment is 10 to 12 times. As we have said before progeny from proven AI sires consistently average $800 to $1000 more than those sired by clean up bulls. Yes, we have made great strides over the past 25 years with Brangus genetics; however, it would be hard to imagine what we could do and how much of an improvement it would make to the THR program and database if we could increase the percentage of AI calves registered to 20% - 30%.

At GENETRUST we are committed to helping the Brangus breed attain these goals. We encourage both registered and commercial producers to give us a call and visit with us about your program and what we can do to help. Our representatives can then utilize their contacts in helping find qualified personnel that can assist you in making a synchronization and AI program work for you. Our team has a wealth of knowledge and experience with AI and the genetics we have available to best fit and accelerate your program.

Vernon Suhn has been actively involved in the genetics of this breed for the last 34 years. Prior to that he worked in the registered Angus business and was raised on a 10,000 head commercial operation in South Dakota where some of the first large scale commercial application of AI was done.

Craig Green has been involved with the Brangus breed his entire life. He started out working for Brinks Brangus while in high school and has held several positions since then. He has traveled extensively both domestically and internationally, sees a tremendous amount of Brangus annually; plus, has a ability to design matings that work.

Cody Gariss was born and raised on a registered and commercial Brangus influence operation in Missouri. His family also maintains a large stocker operation and through this practical hands on experience he has developed an excellent eye for the good ones that work.

Doug Williams is well known in the southeast for his ability to find and produce the good ones. He has acquired a following and respect from both registered and commercial producers in that area of the country.

If any of our staff can be of any assistance or can help in any way to make our customers more successful please contact us. We would consider it a privilege to visit with you about this great breed of cattle.

• TJM Coronado 535X is a proven calving ease bull. When analyzing him you will find added depth of flank and depth of chest floor, a solid big foot with added bone.

• Coronado is moderate in frame and passes this along to his offspring. He is perhaps one of the top two sons of the highly used CB Hombre 541T3.

• His dam, a Lambert daughter, MS Brinks Lambert 535T4, has proven production records to validate him as a herd sire and progeny on the ground by him gives him proven herd sire status.

• Coronado has excellent individual data with an AWW of 754 to ratio 122, an AYW of 1300 to ratio 110. His REAR was an outstanding 111 with IMFR 116.

• Analyze his performance chart, you will see his true numbers are solid. We are using Coronado on many females we feel need to be moderated in frame, as well as a calving ease bull.

Artificial insemination helps our program in many ways. With proper synchronization schedules our breeding season is much shorter.

We have the ability to pick and choose specific bulls fitting criteria for specific females within our herd. Our AI sired calves have been easy to market not only from quality but sire recognition. We have paid close attention to AI sires who consistently top sales and we feel these bulls help our program as well.

With the use of AI our replacement heifers are the same age which makes them old enough to breed at the beginning of our breeding season. We have seen through AI a much more consistent and uniform calf crop which adds value to our program.

Within this industry we think those who are not making an effort to AI and use the most proven bulls available are getting left behind and this should be one of the most used tools in your toolbox.

Randy and Samantha NugentCross N Farm Olla, LA

We have been using AI on our commercial virgin heifers for the last several years. We think the benefits far out way the negatives. Once you learn the synchronization process the rest is easy.

AI has become an integral part of our operation. Replacement heifers going back into our herd are sired now by the most proven Brangus bulls in existence. The uniformity and consistency has greatly improved. We encourage all cattlemen to make an effort to use AI. The genetic progress will pay.

Frank JohnstonLeto Farm Letohatchee, AL

The use of AI in our program is simple, with the availability of proven AI sires we can boost pounds in our steer calves.

Using AI sires there is plenty of data available to take our herd in any direction we want to go. Marketing replacement females in our herd is what we do best, sire recognition adds value to not only females we keep but also those we choose to sell.

Brad ChisumNiangua, MO

We use AI in our program for many reasons. With tremendous improvements associated with synchronization protocols, we have found “timed AI” works well for us.

With using AI on our virgin heifers their calving span is much tighter, therefore when they calve early, breed back is sooner making them calve early from then forward.

Artificial insemination allows us to use the bulls of our choice, the registered operations work hard to breed and provide semen on these bulls which works well for us. With the ever rising cost to purchase good bulls we can offset some of our breeding cost in this way.

We feel we can take a set of generic type heifers, AI them to bulls who are proven in traits we choose, and this adds value whether we retain as replacements or if we choose to market them.

WHY THE COMMERCIAL CATTLEMAN SHOULD USE ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION.

It would’ve been interesting to live in the old west. I can’t imagine standing on the side of a street in Dodge City watching a gun fight ensue and wondering who was going to be upright when the smoke cleared.

In a way it reminds me of this cattle market today. This market is every adjective one can think of to describe it. Phenomenal, outstanding, great, and just plain nuts! And that is great, don’t get me wrong, BUT what are you doing today to get you through tomorrow? Now is when we feel bullet proof. Everybody’s stock sells good now, the good ones and the plain ones, the genetically superior ones that had a true breeding plan and great management and the ones out of ol’ shep that were just as much an accident as a plan.

Sometimes, in markets like this it is hard for people to see the differentiation between the front end and the middle of the road, but trust me it is there. As a feeder/stocker cattle purchaser I assure you the “good” ones still cost more. The real difference, however, will be seen down the road, on a day when this market isn’t quite as flashy and the packers and order buyers aren’t in dire straits just to buy something but rather demanding something they know will perform in a tighter margined situation. I don’t say this to be a wet blanket on today, but rather as a reminder that tomorrow’s genetic base is built today. Now is the time to reinvest back into the cowherd, whether that is through better herd bull selection, the use of artificial insemination, stricter culling regiment on heifers or other improved management practices. I realize and fully understand that while revenues have increased so have production costs, however if you intend to be in the cow business for the long haul, today is the day to start.

We have such an advantage when it comes to the selection process in the cattle business compared to what we had even 10 years ago its almost hard to comprehend. While that advancement sometimes brings with it challenges, one simple, yet well founded piece of technology that is decades old and still under used is Artificial Insemination (A.I.). The benefits of A.I. have been well documented throughout the industry, including the cost of breeding per exposed cow, which varies from ranch to ranch, but consistently falls from $20-$40 less through A.I. than natural service.

In addition, commercial producers have access to high end, high accuracy, predictable genetics that most times would be unrealistic if it were simply left to natural service. We know all this, but still the use of A.I. in the commercial world is very miniscule. To a degree it is because the biggest benefits, the ones that really make dollars and cents, are a little hard to quantify for the naked eye.

How much would it be worth to have an average of 75-100+ extra pounds at weaning per calf simply because they are older due to the fact that 80-90% of your calf crop calved in the first half of your 60 day calving season because of A.I. synchronization as opposed to 60-65% with only natural service? The answer is a lot! Dr. Les Anderson and Paul Deaton with the University of Kentucky calculated this through their research a few years back and found that 85% of cows that had been synchronized and A.I.’d prior to natural exposure calved in the first 30 days of the season vs. 62% in the first 30 days on the cows only seeing natural exposure. As a result of older calves at weaning, the cows that had been A.I.’d prior to bull service brought in nearly 110 pounds more per exposed cow over what the cows that only saw natural service produced. In today’s market, that’s a $120+ advantage/head by raising a 660lb steer versus a 550lb one! That’s a realistic number that certainly provides a financial incentive and one that could be

When the Smoke Clears

- 27 -

- 28 -

extrapolated further depending on the sires selected, but that’s only part of the story.

The biggest benefit to an A.I. program, which is rarely discussed and even harder to measure, yet particularly applicable to the GENETRUST Brangus sires is the set of females you will have grazing your pastures because you chose to A.I. Regardless of any market scenario, the one thing that NEVER goes out of style is a good momma cow. At the end of the day it’s where it all begins and ends. Use A.I. to increase your bottom line in the short term, but don’t forget about the tremendous difference you can make in the factory for years down the road because she’s the one keeping you in business for the long haul. While the benefits you received by upgrading your cow herd base may be hard to quantify on paper today, it’ll pay for itself many times over the next decade. When the smoke clears, be the one standing in a pasture full of front end females, and you will see the difference A.I. made.

A.I. is much simpler than it has ever been. With high quality semen and the latest synchronization protocols you can expect 60+% conception and breed them ALL in one day. GENETRUST has an outstanding set of A.I.

sires available and we are very competitive in semen pricing for commercial cattlemen.

In 2012, 8 of the top 10 leaders in registrations with IBBA were bred and/or owned by GENETRUST partners. Quality doesn’t come by accident. If you have questions or need help finding labor assistance to perform everything from the synchronization protocol to the arm service give us a call. Vern, Craig, Doug and myself have a great network in cow country and would be more than glad to put you in contact with good people who could help. Give it a try, I promise it will be one of the best decisions you ever made.

Long time GENETRUST customer in Missouri, Brad Chisum, summed it up best- “The use of AI in our program is simple, with the availability of proven AI sires we can boost pounds in our steer calves. By using AI sires there is plenty of data available to take our herd in any direction we want to go. Marketing replacement females in our herd is what we do best, and sire recognition adds value to not only females we keep but also those we choose to sell.”
