Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio’s First Summer Resort!
Extra, extra, read all about it! Residential recycling will be returning!
The Village plans its own recycling services after all county-wide drop off locations
have been suspended. The Geneva recycling center (owned and operated by the City of
Geneva) has shut its doors. After adding curbside service the City has closed the facility
indefinitely. The Village of Geneva-on-the-Lake has solicited offers from various
haulers and is proposing to locate a drop-off recycling bin at the Wastewater Treatment
Facility. Final details, signage, and hours are still being developed. The Village would
like to have the site ready for Memorial Day and then operate the facility year round in
future years. Yard Waste items can still be dropped off free of charge to Village
Residents at Saybrook Soil and Compost on Depot Road. For further information about
yard waste and recycling , please refer to the Village website www.genevaonthelake.org.
In other news…Mercury levels in Lake Erie are a concern for everyone. One of the
easiest ways for mercury to make its way to the Lake is through a toilet, sink or other
drain. The Village tests mercury levels discharged from the Wastewater Plant and in an
effort to keep our levels within Ohio EPA guidelines we want to remind residents and
businesses of the water quality threat posed by mercury. Common sources of mercury in
the household are CFL lights, batteries, thermostat switches, thermometers, clothes irons
among others. Most importantly, if these items are broken their contents should not be
washed down the sink. Unbroken items should not be thrown in the trash, they should be
recycled. The Village can properly recycle your CFL light bulbs and other mercury-
based items. If you have questions about items with mercury or want to schedule a drop
off of items with mercury please contact Larry Severino at 440-466-8698.

on Monday’s pickup list.
Lake Road Water Sewer Project- After a long winter, the Lake Road Water
Sewer Project is ready to proceed. The project entails replacing 1,300 feet of
water main, 1,300 of new sidewalk, and 600 feet of sewer main along Lake Road
between the Lodge and Adventure Zone. Easton Excavating will be performing
the work. Actual construction is expected to commence in March, 2015. The
Village secured over $150,000 in grants from CDBG to construct the sewers and
sidewalks. Ashtabula County Department of Environmental Services is providing
Ohio Public Works Commission grants in the amount $150,000 to match the
Village contribution.
Linda Drive Paving Project- The Linda Drive paving project was held over
last fall after unfavorable bidding prices. This project is expected to go out to bid
in early March/April for a summer construction schedule. The Village hopes to
let this project go out for bid with the Austin-Hawley Path Project in order to
attract more competitive bid prices. The Ohio Public Works Commission has
provided $28,000 in grant money to offset a portion of the project costs.
Austin/Hawley Path- The Village is currently in the design stage of this
1,600 foot long 8 foot wide off-street path between Austin Road and Hawley
Drive on the South side of Lake Road. The $193,000 aims to improve
connectivity and safety for bicyclist and pedestrians. The funding has been
secured through a CDBG grant of $128,000 and a private gift of $65,000 from
the Civic Development Corporation of Ashtabula County.
Streets- The Village is in the process of securing funding from the Ohio
Department of Transportation Infrastructure Bank for the maintenance of several
local streets. The Village plans to use the loan proceeds to perform a series of
chip and fog seal treatments to help preserve and extend life between costly re-
surfacing projects. The additional money generated from the street levy replace-
ment will be used to pay off the loan. The Village will continue to apply for
grants for full repair and rehabilitation. The street department has done a great
job in keeping up with the snow plowing. This winter has been hard on the street
equipment and the streets. Once the snow thaws the street department will com-
plete an assessment and start on the repairs.
WWTP- Progress continues on the Village’s Wastewater Treatment Plant
even though the 42-year old facility struggles to meet permit compliance. The
Village made significant progress in 2014. Design of the new facility was granted
a “permit-to-install.” On top of this approval the Village has been offered 3
million dollars in grants towards the construction of the new 7.4 million dollar
facility. The Village is still pursuing several other grant opportunities to assist
with the cost of construction. The goal is to have a final funding and financing
picture by the middle of summer along with the start of the bid process.
CCA Income Tax Assistance CCA, the agency tasked with our Income Tax collection, will provide on-site
assistance to village taxpayers on Thursday, April 9, 2015. The free assis-
tance will be available from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Village Hall.

News From The Desk of Chief Bruckman
The Geneva-on-the-Lake Police Department is continuing to provide first class police
services to the Village of Geneva-on-the-Lake. Over the last year there have been three
vacancies at full-time Police Officer. Two of these three positions were filled in 2014.
Officer Patrick Evans was appointed as a full-time Police Officer in July of 2014 after
serving in both Auxiliary and part-time Officer Positions. Officer Sandra Davis was
appointed as a full-time Police Officer in December of 2014 after serving in both
Auxiliary and part-time Officer Positions. The Police Department is currently in the
process of filling the third position.
Officer Evans comes to the department with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice
with an area of emphasis in Law Enforcement Administration from Youngstown State
University. Officer Evans has completed and passed the certification testing to become an
Emergency Medical Responder allowing him to provide medical assistance for our
Ambulance and Fire Department. Officer Evans started his career with the Geneva-on-
the-Lake Police Department as an Auxiliary Police Officer in February of 2011. While
serving as an Auxiliary Officer, Officer Evans served on the Bike Patrol Unit and also
became the Village Code Enforcement Officer. Officer Evans is currently the Police
Departments Law Enforcement Automated Data System (L.E.A.D.S) agency coordinator.
Officer Evans is also responsible for maintaining the departments reporting and dash
camera systems.
Officer Davis comes to the department with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice
from Kent State University. Officer Davis has completed and passed the certification
testing to become an Emergency Medical Responder allowing her to provide medical
assistance for our Ambulance and Fire Department. Officer Davis started her career with
the Geneva-on-the-Lake Police Department as an Auxiliary Police Officer in May of
2011. While serving as an Auxiliary Officer, Officer Davis served on the Bike Patrol Unit.
Officer Davis was recognized for her quick action in assisting in the delivery of a baby
prior to EMS arrival.
Over the last three years the Police Department has developed programs that assisted
in covering the costs and expenses of the Police Department. Some examples are the
auctioning of confiscated and forfeited vehicles and having an annual fundraiser to cover
the matching of grants and assisting in covering part or all of specialty units such as the
K9 unit and bike patrol. The department has also sought out and applied for grants allow-
ing for the purchase of equipment and training at no cost to the Village. This is a limited
scope of what the Police Department has done to limit the impact of constantly rising
costs of operating a Police Department.
This year the department is looking at increased costs of dispatching, county wide 911
consolidation, constant upgrade of equipment to meet state and local mandates, the cost of
training new employees, along with the general rising cost of operating the Police
Department.
Compared to other Police Department budgets the Geneva-on-the-Lake Police
Departments budget is relatively low. The department is constantly conscientious of how
it spends its budgeted money while providing first class services to the residents and
tourists of the Village of Geneva-on-the-Lake. Chief Timothy Bruckman and the Officers
of the Geneva-on-the-Lake Police Department thank you for your continued support and
look forward to continuing to serve you for years to come.
