    purposes

Genre and Composition Learning how some genres are structured is

very important to writing progress in school

Personal narrative, non-fiction informative andargumentative essay are just a few genres thatstudents write over and over throughout theiryears at school

Teachers should teach how these different genresare brainstormed, structured and their purposeand should not assume that students know

Genre and Comprehension Learning genres help students with

    comprehension as well

If students know the structure of a particulargenre, they have a better understanding of whatis going to happen throughout the text

Students who had never read a fairy tale before

probably wouldnt know that they start once upona time and end happily ever after

Also, students who had never seen a line graphbefore, would have a tough time reading it

Assessments and Activities When new genres are read aloud to the class,

the teacher should talk about the various

aspects (organization, purpose, content, etc.)of that particular genre Children can practice their knowledge of the genrejust read by writing one of their own, using theaspects outlined previously

Another fun activity is acting out a particular storyas a play Children experience the structure of the story first hand

    as they act it out
