• Genre is a critical convention for the industry since it minimalizes the risk of failure by using work that has previously been successful.

• This is usually a piece of media that has trended, using a successful piece to set a genre allows the industry to create a profit as they revitalise what has worked to allow a safety buffer for their product, however not all companies use this method.

GENRE AND THE INDUSTRY

• Genre offers audiences pleasure since their expectations are fulfilled, the industry reassure the audience through typical conventions fitting genres however they also challenge what the audience expect by extending on these ideas.

• Challenging the conventions prevents the audience losing interest due to formulaic products.

• Directors and screenwriters repeat and vary conventions often creating parodies “Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepson” to keep the audience interested. Overall there is a balance needed to be kept between Industry Profit and Audience Pleasure since they both fund each other.

GENRE AND THE AUDIENCE

SUB GENRES AND HYBRIDS• A Hybrid-Genre is a combination of narrative elements of two or more

genres. An example of this is “Jazzical” music which combines the elements of both classical and jazz music to attract a larger audience.

• Where as a Sub-Genre is a subdivision of a larger genre such as Anarcho Punk music which targets a niche audience who follow anarchist movements however this comes under the primary genre Punk.

GENRE CONVENTIONS: EXAMPLE -ROCK VIDEO

• Editing: In a Rock video the editing uses effects such as matching footage/action to the beat of the music as well as using fast cutting and a string use of cutting to dialogue.

• Featuring Characters: In this case the primary character is the use of the lead singer of the band who can be the lead of the narrative if there is a story involved.

• Narrative: Usually the narrative focuses on either a story fitting to the lyrics or something more abstract that has nothing to do with the music, the narrative is usually succinct and has few paths to follow. This is most often combined with the band playing.

• Camera Work: The footage usually consists of a fast paced piece of action usually combined with a multitude of different angle particularly long shots when focusing on the band and close ups of the lead during both the narrative and performance aspects. The composition usually consists of the Band in a typical position with an audience followed by a particular focus on the lead singer.

• Mise-en-Scene: Typically in a Rock video the lighting is low and the location usually dark and grungy, usually at night. The costume also fits with this darkness as usually the costume features dominant reds and blacks and there are usually instruments that fit with these particular settings.
