The Battle of Marathon on 490 BC, took place during the 1st Persian invasion of Greece and is often seen as a pivotal moment in European history. 10.000 Athenians stay opposite and won 100,000 infantry from the Persian forces. The Athens Classic Marathon is based on Phidippides, the messenger who ran from the Battle of Marathon to Athens to announce the Greeks' victory over the Persians. In modern times, the competitive race is traced back to the Olympics of 1896 and it is one of the most difficult worldwide marathon races….more

Lavreotiki is at the southern end of Attica. A barren, hilly stretch of land with low vegetation along the sea that bears the rich gifts of Pluto and Hephaistos.1/20 of the know minerals in the world can be found here. Lavrion is considered to be the greatest monument of the mining and metallurgic activity of the ancient Greeks, also one of the biggest and most complex mines of the whole ancient Mediterranean world. Aegina island lies 17 n.m.(27 km) south from Athens. According to tradition, Aegina was the mother of Aeacus, a native ruler of the island. During ancient times, Aegina was a rival to Athens, the great sea power of the time. The Temple of Aphaia stands on a peak of ~160 m on the eastern side of the island. Late Bronze Age female figurines that were discovered at the site, possibly indicate that continuous cult activity took place from the 14th century BC onwards. This strongly suggests a connection with the ancient Minoan civilization.…more

The Monastery of Osios Loukas with its exquisite Byzantine mosaics is probably the most significant religious monument of mid-Byzantine era. The Cyclades Sail & Cycling program visits the main harbors of 7 islands with a 90 ft wooden sailing schooner. Each night we sleep on board in a private cabin and during the day we explore the islands by bike. Non-cycling friends while bikers are pedaling around the islands, they are free to explore the harbor towns of the islands. The vessel is a traditional wooden schooner of 90 ft long with 5 cabins for guests and 2 cabins for the crew. 4 double cabins (10x12 sq. ft) sleep 1-3 persons, and the Master cabin sleeps 2-4 persons.
