1 Rationale Ongoing collaborative research projects between the Onshore Energy Branch, Geoscience Australia
and NTGS are designed to produce pre-competitive information to assist with the evaluation of the
petroleum prospectivity of onshore Northern Territory basins.
Bing Bong 5, drilled by Shell in 1982, is one of a number of wells drilled in the McArthur Basin that
intersect Paleoproterozoic organic-rich rocks. The well intersects the Lynott Formation from 0 m to
60.28 m, the Reward Dolostone from 60.28 m to 214.6 m, the Barney Creek Formation from 214.6 m
to 352.65 mj, and the Teena Dolostone from 352.65 m to 370 m at total depth. This data release
contains the results of a geochemical study of Bing Bong 5 and includes mineralogy from X-ray
diffraction (XRD), source rock characterisation from Rock-Eval pyrolysis and trace metal data from X-
ray fluorescence (XRF) and quadrapole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (Q-ICP-MS).
This work was carried out in the Isotope and Organic Geochemistry, and Inorganic Geochemical
Laboratories at Geoscience Australia and was undertaken as part of the Australian Source Rock
Study Project.
Samples were taken between the 28th of May 2015 and 5th of June 2015 at the Core Facilities and
Technical Support, Department of Resources, Northern Territory Geological Survey, Darwin. All rocks
analysed in this study are listed in the supplementary information, of which the 61 samples analysed
covered three formations; the Lynott Formation, the Reward Dolostone and the Barney Creek
Formation including the Here’s Your Chance (HYC) Pyritic Shale Member from 302.16 m to 318.35 m.
All remaining rocks, powders and residues are held at Geoscience Australia.

2 Method summary
Rock samples were obtained from cores recovered from the Bing Bong 5 petroleum well at a sampling
resolution of approximately 1 sample every 5 m to 10 m depending on variations in lithology. These
samples were washed to be free of surface contamination and crushed to a fine powder in a tungsten
carbide mill. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was undertaken on the raw powder using a Bruker D4™ XRD. Quantification of the multiphase mixtures using Rietveld quantitative analysis was undertaken
using the DIFFRAC™ software suite. Major and select trace element abundances were analysed by
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) using a Bruker S8 Tiger™ spectrometer. The major elements were analysed
using 30 mm diameter fused beads prepared from a 1:6 sample/lithium tetraborate mixture from
calcined powder. The trace elements were analysed using 35 mm diameter pressed pellets prepared
at a pressure of 2 tonnes from a mixture of 15 g raw sample powder with 1.6 mL of a PVA/water
binder. Trace elements were undertaken via quadrapole inductively coupled plasma mass
spectrometry (Q-ICP-MS) using an Agilent 7500 series machine. Solutions for Q-ICP-MS analysis
were prepared from the multi-acid dissolution of ~200 mg of the individual fused disks. Ten replicate
samples were analysed along with multiple analyses of 2 international shale standards (SCo-1 and
SBC-1) and a single internal basalt standard (WG1).
Total organic carbon (TOC) content and hydrocarbon potential were measured using a Rock-Eval 6
Turbo™ (Vinci Technologies, France). Approximately 60 mg of powdered whole rock (shale and
carbonate lithologies) samples were loaded into pre-combusted crucibles (600°C; 9 hours), loaded
into the carousel and heated under inert nitrogen in both the pyrolysis (to obtain S1, S2, Tmax and S3
peaks) and oxidation (to obtain the S4 peak) ovens. The pyrolysis oven was first held at 300°C for 5
minutes and then ramped at 25°C per minute to 650°C. The oxidation oven was held at 400°C for 3
minutes, and then ramped at 20°C per minute to 850°C and held isothermal at 850°C for 5 minutes.
The flame ionisation detector (FID) was calibrated by running IFP standard ‘160000’. The infra-red (IR)
analyser was calibrated against a standard gas with a known concentration of CO2 and CO. Analysis
blanks were run with the sample batch and the blank data was automatically subtracted from all
analyses. The results were processed with Optkin 3.0.0 software where peak heights (S1, S2 [Tmax],
S3, S4) and geochemical indices including, for example; Total organic carbon (TOC) content, oxygen
index (OI), hydrogen index (HI) and production index (PI) are automatically calculated. Definitions and
calculations of Rock-Eval pyrolysis parameters are provided in Table 1 (Peters et al., 2005). Rock-Eval
pyrolysis parameters are considered unreliable and not tabulated when S2 ≤ 0.1 mg HC/g rock. All pyrograms are recorded in the supplementary information.
3
Table 1 Definitions of Rock-Eval pyrolysis parameters
Parameter Name (units) Definition
S1 mg extractable hydrocarbons (HCs) / g rock
Measure of the amount of free hydrocarbons (HCs) present in the rock. The free HCs are those thermally desorbed at 300°C for 3 mins.
S2 mg HCs (kerogen pyrolysate) / g rock
Measure of HCs formed by cracking of kerogen, resins and asphaltenes. The pyrolysate is measured from 300°C to 650°C at 25°C/min.
S3 mg CO2 (organic) / g rock Measure of CO2 generated from oxygenated functional groups in kerogen. The CO2 is collected from 300°C to 390°C at 25°C/min.
Tmax Maximum height of the S2 peak in the temperature program (°C)
The temperature corresponding to the maximum rate of HC generation from the cracking of kerogen (S2).
TOC Total Organic Carbon (wt %) Measure of the rock's organic richness. TOC = PC (pyrolysable carbon, wt %) + RC (Residual carbon, wt %)
PC Pyrolysable carbon (wt %) The amount of TOC represented by S1 and S2. PC = 0.83 * (S1 + S2)
RC (S4) mg C / g rock Measure of the residual carbon (RC) in a rock. Also termed S4.
PI Production Index The extent to which kerogen has been transformed into oil and gas. PI = [S1 /(S1 + S2)]
HI Hydrogen Index [mg hydrocarbons (S2) /g TOC]
Amount of HCs released on pyrolysis (S2) normalised to TOC. HI = 100 * S2 / TOC
OI Oxygen Index [mg CO2 (S3) /g TOC]
Amount of carbon dioxide released on pyrolysis (S3) normalised to TOC. OI = 100 * S3 / TOC
MINC Mineral Carbon (wt %) The amount of carbon (C) contained in mineral phases e.g. carbonates. Also termed total inorganic carbon (TIC).

3 Results
3.1 Mineralogy
Major mineral phases through the core include quartz, dolomite, microcline and muscovite (Figure 1;
Supp. Table 1). Minor minerals include albite, illite, kaolinite and pyrite. While nearly all samples
contain this mineral assemblage, there are compositional differences between the formations. In
particular, the average percentage of quartz is higher in the Reward Dolostone compared with the
Barney Creek Formation, and conversely the average percentage of dolomite and muscovite are lower
in the Reward Dolostone compared with the Barney Creek Formation (Figure 1). Interestingly, there is
more pyrite in the Barney Creek Formation compared with the HYC Pyritic Shale Member (Figure 1E).
This is consistent with the HyLogger data package (Smith, 2015).

Variations in sample mineralogy (in %) including A- Quartz, B- Microcline, C- Muscovite, D- Dolomite, and E- Pyrite through Bing Bong 5 with symbols differentiating between the Lynott Formation (blue diamond), Reward Dolostone (grey squares), Barney Creek Formation (dark grey circles) and the HYC Pyritic Shale Member of the Barney Creek Formation (gold diamonds).

3.2 Rock-Eval pyrolysis
The results of the Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses are presented in Figures 2 and 3 with all raw data and
pyrograms depicted in the supplementary information (Supp. 2 and 3). The TOC contents for the
Reward Dolomite and Barney Creek Formation are > 0.5% (average RD = 1.23%, st. dev. = 0.73;
average BCF = 1.48%, st. dev. = 0.82), with the HYC pyritic member of the Barney Creek Formation
containing higher on average TOC values compared with the rest of the formation (average = 2.57%,
st. dev. = 1.33). The Tmax through Bing Bong 5 increases with depth from thermally immature at the
top of the Reward Dolostone through to mature at the base of the Reward and into the Barney Creek
Formation (Figure 2B). Figure 3 plots Tmax vs HI values for samples with S2 ≥ 0.1 HC/g rock. The
results demonstrate that even the most organic-rich source rocks (ie. where TOC > 0.5) have HI
values < 39 mg HC/g TOC indicating the presence of type III kerogen, and range from thermally
immature to mature. In summary, although the upper section of the BCF of the HYC Pyritic Shale
Member show some organic enrichment (0.5 to 3.6% TOC), their HI values are all < 39 and hence do
not have any HC potential.
Figure 2. Variations in A- TOC and B- Tmax through Bing Bong 5 with coloured diamonds differentiating between the Lynott Formation (blue diamond), Reward Dolostone (grey squares), Barney Creek Formation (dark grey circles) and the HYC pyritic member of the Barney Creek Formation (gold diamonds).

3.3 Major and trace elements
All major and trace elements are plotted in the supplementary information (Supp. 4 and Supp. 5).
Variations in selected environmentally sensitive major and trace elements are shown in Figure 4. The
total iron/aluminium (FeT/Al) ratios in addition to Vanadium (V) and Uranium (U) concentrations
gradually increase down core with an increase in concentration in the HYC Pyritic Shale Member.
Molybdenum (Mo) values, however, remain relatively constant with small fluctuations at the base of
the Reward Dolostone and in the HYC Pyritic Shale Member (Figure 4).
