What is Geography????

• Geography is the study of the Earth and its lands, features, inhabitants, and phenomena.

• 5 themes > location, place, human/ environment interaction, movement and region

Geo Vocab• 1.       State - one of the constituent units of a nation having a federal government (the fifty

states); The United States of America.• 2.       State boundary - lines between two states marking territory.• 3.       Directions - the line or course on which something is moving or is aimed to move or along

which something is pointing or facing.  (North, East, South, West).• 4.       Country - a political state or nation or its territory; an indefinite usually extended expanse

of land.• 5.       Landforms - a natural feature of a land surface (e.g. mountains, lakes, plateaus, and

peninsulas).• 6.       Physical Map - illustrate the physical features of an area, such as the mountains, rivers and

lakes. The water is usually shown in blue. Colors are used to show relief—differences in land elevations. Green is typically used at lower elevations, and orange or brown indicate higher elevations.

• 7.       Road Map - show major—some minor highways—and roads, airports, railroad tracks, cities and other points of interest in an area. People use road maps to plan trips and for driving directions.

• 8.       Topographical Map - include contour lines to show the shape and elevation of an area. Lines that are close together indicate steep terrain, and lines that are far apart indicate flat terrain.
