A REMINDER…

What you need to know for the

KGT (Key Geographical Themes Exam) Active revision is the key to success!

1. Start with the checklists in the previous booklet – remember you used

red/amber/green on the key questions over February half term. USE THIS TO GUIDE

YOUR REVISION.

2. Use your green CGP revision guide for GCSE Geography OCR B specification (ISBN

978 1 84762 373 7).

3. If you are not sure about how to revise, try one of the revision techniques we have

used in lessons or use the guidance in this booklet.

4. Learn all the case studies listed below… You now have revision cards for all of the

case studies. Memorise 5 place specific facts or statistics for each case study,

create mnemonics or deconstruct 9 mark questions (on the next few pages).

Tectonic and climatic hazards:

- Haiti earthquake (help sheet provided by your geography teacher)

- LA earthquake (help sheet provided by your geography teacher)

- Cyclone Nargis (p. 61 CGP guide)

- Hurricane Katrina (p. 61 CGP guide)

Economic activity and development:

- FARM-Africa (p. 71 CGP guide)

- Location of industry – Kenya (p. 75 CGP guide)

- Location of industry – UK (p. 76 CGP guide)

- Pearl River Delta (p. 80 CGP guide)

- MNCs – Nike in Vietnam (help sheet provided by your geography teacher)

Population and settlement:

- China’s one child policy (p. 32 CGP guide)

- International migration from Poland to the UK (p. 37 CGP guide)

- Ageing population UK (p. 34 CGP guide)

- Internal migration from rural to urban India (help sheet provided by your geography

teacher)

- Sustainable urban change in Stratford (help sheet provided by your geography

teacher)

- Change over time to shopping in Southampton (help sheet provided by your

geography teacher).

OK I know what to revise…so how

do I revise? Below are some methods that we have tried in class and you could use at home when you

are revising independently. Remember it is important that your revision is active and you

are not just reading through your revision guide or notes! You need to be doing something

with your notes, re-writing/putting them into another format/testing yourself or a friend.

Mind maps

These are good for linking together ideas/topics. They can be used to test yourself to see

how much you already know then adding in another colour information you missed from

the revision guide.

Case study cards

These allow you to learn crucial facts, statistics and place

specific detail to get top marks on the case study

questions. Use them to test yourself or get someone else

to test you!

Past paper questions

There are lots of past paper questions available. They can be found in the white workbook

that goes with the revision guide. There is also a website that holds past exam papers for

geography (with the mark schemes too!). http://www.ocr.org.uk/qualifications/gcse-

geography-b-j385-from-2012/ … Just be careful as the KGT topics rotate every year

(remember rivers and coasts is the SDME this year). Even if you do not want to write full

answers in exam conditions, just planning answers is a great revision technique.

Quiz (with friends/independently)

Use your friends or whoever is at home to quiz you on topics or case studies! You could

come up with the questions or have a go at the questions at the end of each section in the

CGP revision guide.

Mnemonics (for case studies)

This technique involves you processing information from your case studies. First think of a

word/words that sums up a case study e.g. Haiti earthquake. Then try and fit the facts from

that case study starting with each letter.

Case study questions

In the KGT, there will be 3 case study questions worth 12 marks each (9 for content

and 3 for SPAG)

It is really important that you do the following things when answering case study

questions:

Read the question carefully.

Choose the correct case study.

Include keywords.

Include at least 5 cheeky facts

Include connectives (keep using ‘this means that’)

Structure your answer clearly.

If the question asks for three developed ideas, use firstly, secondly and thirdly.

Use a detailed annotated diagram if it helps.

Check your spelling, punctuation and grammar (there are three marks

available for this.)

How do I deconstruct and plan a case

study answer? Firstly read through the question. Box the command words, underline any keywords and

glance over your case study cards or CGP revision guide. Now decide where your three

developed ideas will come from (see the 1, 2 and 3 below). Then you can start planning!

Name the case study and locate it (you get a place specific mark for locating it!). Then think

about what you would include in each developed idea, don’t forget cheeky facts and

statistics! Remember you must use paragraphs to get 3/3 for SPaG.
