1. INTRODUCTION

This reports describes the results of a remote sensing study of the Blackwater placer claims located in the

Cariboo Mining Division of central British Columbia. These claims, owned by Blackwater Explorations Ltd,

are currently being explored for their potential to host placer gold and platinum deposits. The objective of

the study was to determine if information on the structural geology of the claims area could be derived

from an analysis of Landsat 7 ETM and ASTER multispectral data and ERS1 radar imagery.

1.1. Location and Access

The Blackwater placer claims (BX claims) are situated about 440 km north of Vancouver and 40 km north-

northwest of Quesnel (Figure 1) within N.T.S. map sheets 93G/2W and 93G/7W and the Cariboo Mining

Division. The claims are centered at approximately 122°53’8.8” W longitude and 53°14’ 43.7” N latitude.

Access to the property is from the Blackwater Road (Quesnel to Vanderhoof) and a number of logging

roads that extend north and northeast from the Blackwater Road onto the claims.

1.2. Claim Status

Figure 2 is a claim plan of the property. The BX placer claim, the original part of which was staked in

2007, covers 1,372.7640 hectares. The claim has a current expiry date of April 9, 2011 and is 100%

owned by Blackwater Explorations Ltd.

1.3. Physiography and Vegetation

The claim lies mostly in the Fraser Basin, along the western side of the Fraser Plateau. The Fraser Basin

is for the most part a flat or gently rolling surface below ~900m. Both it and the Fraser Plateau in this area

were occupied by ice whose movement created drumlins and drumlin-like forms in the extensive glacial

drift. Ice movement was in a northward direction.

The claim covers two watersheds, one draining southeast into the Fraser River and the other draining

northwest to north into the Blackwater River. The southeastern drainage is about 13.72 km long with an

elevation range from 789 to 520m. The northwestern drainage is about 11.26 km long with and elevation

range from 830 to 560m..

Dense brush, beetle-killed pine, spruce and some fir trees cover the claim.

1.4. Previous Work

There is no record of any previous exploration work on the BX placer claim. There is no record of any

assement reports being filed on the adjacent placer claims. There are no B.C. Minfile occurrences on the

claim.

2. Regional Geology

The regional bedrock geology is shown in Figure 3, based on the 1:250,000 scale digital compilation of

Massey et al, 2005. Cherts and other siliceous sediments of the Cache Creek Group are mapped as

underlying the BX claim.

With the exception of the area around Blackwater Mtn. and the hills in the southeast corner of Figure 3

and the lower Blackwater River, the entire area on the west side of the Fraser River is blanketed with

Quaternary deposits, primarily glacial till, north-northwest trending drumlins and drumlinoid ridges.

No traverses have been made down the two principal drainages of the BX placer claim and the nature of

the surficial deposits is basically unknown, as is whether or not there are any exposures of bedrock.

3. Regional Geophysics

Figures 4 and 5 show the residual total field and first vertical derivative of aeromagnetics provided by the

Geophysical Centre. The data has nominal flight line spacing of ~800m and the lines were flown in a

north-south direction. The north-south trends apparent in the data are the result of gridding these

relatively coarsely spaced lines and can be discounted.

The residual total field is dominated by the magnetic effects of the crustal rock units. The 1st vertical

derivative reflects magnetic sources closer to the surface than the residual total field, with higher vertical

derivatives generally associated with highly magnetic rocks.

In both Figures 4 and 5 the northwest trend of the bedrock units is evident. The volcanics of the Eocene –

Oligocene units are more magnetic than the sedimentary rocks of the Cache Creek Group. The

distribution the highly magnetic zones suggests that the boundary between the Cache Creek Group and

the Tertiary units could be improved upon. Undoubtedly, the distribution of rock units is more complex

than shown in Figure 3.

Interpreted faults (yellow) and the northwest trending magnetic high (magenta) are shown on both

Figures 4 and 5.

4. Remote Sensing Investigation

Two sources of satellite imagery were used in this work; multispectral ASTER data and ERS-1 radar

imagery.

Two scenes of ASTER were acquired, both collected on June 3, 2003. ASTER imagery includes 3 visible

and near infrared bands with a 15m pixel, 6 shortwave infrared bands with a 30m pixel and 5 thermal

infrared bands with a 90m pixel. This imagery was first orthorectified using TRIM vectors and a SRTM

DEM resampled to 50m then atmospherically corrected. A study subset of imagery was then cut from the

mosaicked file.

ASTER false color composites are shown in Figures 6 and 7. Their only use in the current study was to

provide information on the vegetative cover, no additional structural information was gleaned from the

ASTER data.

The ERS-1 side-looking radar (SAR) imagery was collected September 17, 1995. It has a nominal pixel

size of 12.5m in the C-band. SAR imagery is derived from the energy, or signal, returning to the satellite

from the ground. This signal is dependent on a number of factors including; slope and slope direction,

type of vegetation, moisture content, presence of corner reflectors and specular surfaces. SAR imagery

does not penetrate vegetation or other ground cover except in very unique and rare conditions, not found

in central B.C. SAR imagery does give a very detailed picture of the terrain and is very sensitive to slight

changes in the tree canopy height which provides information on what the topography of the ground

below.

Antenna path and slant range corrections were applied to the SAR imagery, which was then orthorectified

to the ASTER data using the SRTM DEM. Figures 8 and 9 are perspective views of the SAR imagery.

These reveal a weath of topographic detail, in particular the north to north-northwest trending drumlinoid

ridges.

Figure 10 is a compilation of interpreted faults and topographic lineaments compiled from the satellite

imagery.

5. Conclusions and Recommendations

The main topographic feature on the BX placer claim is the northwest trending depression extending from

the Blackwater River southeast to the Fraser River. It is interpreted as marking a bedrock fracture zone.

The multispectral ASTER imagery did not provide any structural information. The ERS-1 SAR imagery

identified numerous topographic lineaments, the great majority of which are related to northerly trending

glacial deposits and scouring. Some of the better developed north-northwest trending topographic

lineaments crossing the main northwest topographic depression could mark bedrock fracture zones. It is

recommended that the placer claim and the adjacent slopes be mapped with the objective of determining

the nature of the surficial deposits and the presence of bedrock exposures.
