•  ESA’s first constellation mission for Earth Observation (EO) •  operated by ESA's European Space Operations Centre (ESOC in Germany)

via the primary ground station in Kiruna (Sweden)

•  consists of the three identical satellites (A, B, and C), which were launched on 22 November 2013 into a near-polar orbit

•  final constellation of the mission was achieved on 17 April 2014. Lower pair (Swarm A and C) flying side by side at about 470 km altitude, Swarm B at about 520 km altitude

Ø  ESA Member States approved (172nd meeting on 15-16 Nov 2017) Swarm extension until the end of 2021 Ø  Swarm celebrated its 4th anniversary in space: 22 Now 2017

Ø  Swarm provides key observables of space weather: precise magnetic field variations, ionospheric plasma drift, electron density, thermospheric density, GPS-derived total electron content, and ionospheric currents and irregularities

Ø  Recommendations from 4th Swarm Science Meeting (March 2017): “We unanimously recommend that ESA ... supports science topics that are beyond the initial Swarm mission objectives, including space physics and space weather research, ... investigates opportunities for near real-time data provision for space weather applications“

Ø  Swarm Utilisation Analysis (SUA) project evaluates the space weather capabilities of the

Swarm mission and will be of highest relevance for other, as well as for the future Low Earth orbiting (LEO) missions with similar instrumentation

Ø  SUA Consortium: Nine European institutions

Ø  SUA is a project of the ESA’s SSA SWE framework: P2-SWE-XVI-SUA Ø  Candidate products for SSA SWE •  Nine existing Swarm data products •  Eleven new Swarm data product ideas

Ø  Five existing Swarm and two new products (based on Swarm data) are currently implemented

into the ESA’s SSA SWE portal: •  Swarm TEC - Total Electron Content •  Swarm Ne - Electron Density •  Swarm IBI - Ionospheric Bubble Index •  Swarm FAC - Field-Aligned Current •  Swarm MAG - Vector Magnetic Field

Ø  Within the SUA study two new Swam products ROT and PEJ have been developed

by GFZ and DTU Space, respectively
