LARDER LAKE MINING DIVISION

DISTRICT OF COCHRANE, ONTARIO

INTRODUCTION

The claim group consists of sixteen (16) patented, three (3) un-

patented and one leased mining claim, plus a large leased single claim area

formerly consisting of eleven staked mining claims. This claim group is a

contiguous claim group and is located in the southeast corner and northwest

corner of Harker and Elliott townships, at 48 0 28' north latitude and 79 0 46'

west longitude. The property is approximately twenty-five (25) miles north-

northeast of the town of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Access to the property is

via the Harker-Holloway access road (Highway 627) which is east of Kirkland

Lake and then north to the Harker-Elliott township line, and east on a bush

access road. (See Figure la and Figure Ib).

Ownership of the claim has been attested to by John E. Perron,

103 Government Road East, Kirkland Lake, Ontario, and was not independently

ascertained by the writer.

A northwest-southeast baseline was established at L 0+00 at the

No. 3 pin of claim 9739 for 1600 feet north and 2000 feet south. Picket

lines were extended at 400 foot line spacings perpendicular to the baseline,

with stations established at 100 foot spacings along the lines. Control tie

lines were cut at L 32+00 E, L 56+00 E and L-76+00 E. At w L 56+00 E

further lines were turned off at 24+00 S, 28+00 S, 32+00 S and 36+00 S.

GENERAL GEOLOGY

O.D.M. Sixtieth Annual Report of the Geology of Harker township

indicates that the bedrock is predominately mafic volcanics, with northeast-

southwest trending rhyolite flows and a small stock of coarse syenite.

The trend of the mafic flows appear to be northeast-southwest and

the most common mafic flow is a diabasic flow with a flow brecciated top. The

tops of these flows are facing south.

The other mafic flows can be andesite, basalt, pillow lavas, diabasic

lavas and some spherulitic lavas as well as some fragmental lavas and tuffs.

The shapes of the pillows indicate that the flows are facing south.

The rhyolite flows range from 100 feet to 300 feet and strike

N 75 0 E. They have steep dips and face south. (These flows have since been

under dispute amond reputed geologists and are now considered to be altered

inner flows of siliceous basalt).

The syenite occurs as a very coarse syenite with large phenocrysts

of feldspars and also as a smaller fine grained syenite occurring on the north

boundary.

INSTRUMENTATION

i) Electromagnetic Survey:

The VLF-EM method uses as a source, one of the main submarine

Page 9: GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY REPORT HARKER AND ELLIOTT TOWNSHIPS ...€¦ · geophysical survey report of the perrex - iris j.v. project harker and elliott townships larder lake mining division

-3-

communications transmitters in the 15 to 25 kHz band found throughout

the world. These submarine communication radio waves travel in a single

mode parallel to the surface of the earth along the earth-air interface.

Without vertical conductors and travelling over flat ground,

the magnetic field component of this radio or surface wave is horizontal

and perpendicular to it's direction of travel.

VLF instruments are capable of picking up these structures

that change the direction of the waves by measuring the tilt angle of

the major axis of the polarization ellipse. This is illustrated by the

tilt angle being zero on flat ground, but when a conductor is present

the tilt angle will acquire a finite value. The direction of such para

meters as depth, depth extent, dip and width of the conductor is very

minimal.

The VLF easily illustrates the location of the upper limit of

dipping structures which can be seen or plotted as VLF profiles as areas

of greatest change in tilt angle per unit of distance.

The instrument used for this survey was an EDA OMNI-PLUS

Mag-VLF (V12F) unit. The sensitivity of this unit is - .\l for the

inpha.se and - .Yk for the quadrature. The operating frequency for the

OMNI-PLUS is from 15-25 kHz and the station selection is made by com

puter controlled data input.

For the purpose of this survey the station used was Annapolis,

Maryland, which has a frequency of 21.4 kHz. A second station was also

Page 10: GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY REPORT HARKER AND ELLIOTT TOWNSHIPS ...€¦ · geophysical survey report of the perrex - iris j.v. project harker and elliott townships larder lake mining division

-4-

used, Cutler, Maine, which has a frequency of 24.0 kHz.

All readings were taken perpendicular to the station and the

topography was noted for further use in the interpretation of the EM

reaults.

i i) Magnetic Survey:

This system uses a backward motion of spinning protons of a

hydrogen atom within a fluid of hydrogen and carbon. These spinning

magnetic protons are caused to have two opposite poles by applying a

magnetic field using a current within a coil of wire. When the current

is stopped, the protons precess about the earth's magnetic field and in

turn generate a small current in the wire. This frequency of precession

is proportional to the earth's total magnetic field.

This instrument is read directly in gammas which is the abso

lute value of the earth's total field for that station.

The instrument used for this survey was an EDA OMNI-PLUS field

Magnetometer and an EDA 350 PPM Base Station Magnetometer, this instrument

has a .01 sensitivity.

The diurnal variation was monitored by a base station monitor

with a reference value of 58,800 gammas.

Diurnal corrections were applied by linear distribution of any

observed variation over the time between the base station, and the field

readings.

PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION OF RESULTS

i) Electromagnetic Survey; NSS

The field data is presented on four plan maps, found in the

back pockets of this report. Map No.'s:

Iris-EW-91-EM-laW presented as profiled data

Iris-EW-91-EM-laE presented as profiled dataIris-EW-91-EM-lb-E presented as contoured data

Iris-EW-91-EM-lb-W presented as contoured data.

The VLF-EM data is illustrated as profiled data along the

survey lines and is plotted at a vertical scate of one inch = - 40/^

with the inphase and positives to the top and quadrature and negatives

to the bottom. See the accompanying plan maps for the conductor location,

It is also illustrated as contoured data which is calculated data mani

pulation, to more easily determine the conductor location.

Due to the many conductors found and all the differences they

project, they will be generally described below.

NSS-91-1 - has a magnetic association and may run parallel to conductor

91-3, - the north end may have conductive overburden inter-

ferdnce.

- At the south the axis deviates to the west and may be off

set by a east-west cross cutting structure, some of this

may be indicated by the magnetic survey.

NSS-91-2 - A low EM response with a strong magnetic disrupting magnetic

low to the west may indicate a structural change such as a

fault which is seen in the magnetic - north-south trend

which cross cuts the northeast trend of the mafic bedrock.

Page 12: GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY REPORT HARKER AND ELLIOTT TOWNSHIPS ...€¦ · geophysical survey report of the perrex - iris j.v. project harker and elliott townships larder lake mining division

-6-

NSS-91-3 - May be conductive overburden, seems to be associates with

NSS-91-1

NSS-91-4 - A very weak EM response which is discontinued to the south

of L 12+00 S No magnetic response.

NSS-91-5 - Follows an inconsistent magnetic response which is rather

disruptive and is difficult to distinguish from any north-

south trending structures and the highly magnetic rock of

the surrounding flows.

NSS-91-6 - Does not have any magnetic association except for isolated

magnetic low in the same area as the crossover on the lines.

This may indicate the magnetic responses could be contoured

differently.

NSS-91-7 - Has a magnetic response associated with it, to a minor degree.

Large magnetic response to the north disguises any clear

association, - has a weak EM response.

NSS-91-8 - Same similarities to 91-7 with no clear magnetic associations.

Has a very weak EM response as well.

NSS-91-9 - A weak EM response with a negative inphase.

- No magnetic association.

- Possible topographically related.

NSS-91-10- Very strong positive EM response.

- With a negative inphase response on L 4+00 N

- To the west is a large magnetic deformation.

- Which clearly indicates a north south cross cutting structure

such as a fault or major shear zone.

NSS-91-11- Weak EM response with a varied magnetic response.

- Unclear whether or not the magnetic response is associated

with the EM anomaly or the complex magnetic susceptability

of the underlying mafic lows.

Page 13: GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY REPORT HARKER AND ELLIOTT TOWNSHIPS ...€¦ · geophysical survey report of the perrex - iris j.v. project harker and elliott townships larder lake mining division

-7-

NSS-91-12 - Has a stronger EM response.

- Similar to 91-10

- Seems to occur just west of the fault as indicated by the

magnetic survey.

- Very weakly continues to the north to L 16+00 N.

NSS-91-13 - Broken up EM response with no reaction on L 4+00 S or L 8+00 N

- Magnetic survey shows some north south structural differences

although not very strong or continuous.

NSS-91-14 and 91-15 - Maybe parallel conductors or one in the same.

- 91-14 may end at L 0+00 or be an offshoot of 91-15. The

zones mapped out by the contouring are rather large EM res

ponses and could possibly be conductive overburden hiding an

anomaly below.

- 91-14 lies saddled between two magnetic highs.

NSS-91-16 - Has no magnetic response

- Is rather narrow in width with a high positive inphase and

positive quadrature.

- Does occur in a low-lying area but doesn't appear to be

topographically related.

ii) Electromagnetic Survey; NAA

The field data is presented on two maps, Map No.: IRIS-EW-91-

EM-2W and IRIS-EW-91-EM-2E, found in the back of this report.

The VLF-EM data is illustrated as profiled data along the sur

vey lines and is plotted at a vertical scale of one inch = - 407o with

the inphase and positives to the top and quadrature and negatives to the

bottom.

Page 14: GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY REPORT HARKER AND ELLIOTT TOWNSHIPS ...€¦ · geophysical survey report of the perrex - iris j.v. project harker and elliott townships larder lake mining division

Due to the many conductors found and all the differences they

project, they will be generally described below.

NAA-91-A - Follows a sporadically north-south magnetic structure con

sisting of offsetting high and low magnetic susceptability.

- Could possibly be related to a topographical feature of a

swamp or low area.

- Occurs as a cross cutting anomaly to NSS-91-1, 91-2, 91-3,

may be indicative of a swamp and conductive overburden.

NAA-91-B - Occurs along a potential disrupting north-south magnetic low

at approximately L 20+00 S, 73+00 E.

- Occurs in common with NSS-91-1.

NAA-91-C - A small conductor which has minor magnetic association.

- Has common association to NSS-91-4.

NAA-91-D - Starting on L 16+00 N and carried through to L 24+00 S.

Follows a large low area of alder swamp and a creek system.

At 16+00 N a fault shear zone has been identified from pre

vious stripping. The conductor has some associated bearing

with the magnetic syrvey although the magnetic response is not

consistant with the VLF-EM target.

- Has strong associations the full length of the grid with NSS-

91-5 although 91-5 occurs 200 feet to east at the southern end.

- This conductor has a very strong inphase.

- With a double dip in the profile, this may indicate parallel

anomalous areas.

- Most likely caused by a fault or shear zone.

NAA-91-E - Trends northwest-southeast and appears to stop at the boundary

where the syenite starts.

- Occurs amongst a magnetic high with erratic responses.

Page 15: GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY REPORT HARKER AND ELLIOTT TOWNSHIPS ...€¦ · geophysical survey report of the perrex - iris j.v. project harker and elliott townships larder lake mining division

-9-

- Seems to cross NSS-91-6 at a 45 0 angle.

Conductor 91-E may indicate the swamp in which it follows.

NAA-91-F - Strong response to North, weaker down on L 4+00 N 18+00 E.

- Plots out in same location as diamond drill hole identified

fault. Fault does not show up on Magnetic survey.

- Occurs as a offshoot of NSS-91-10. May be some structural

faulting.

NAA-91-G and 91-H - Occurs Nest of a north-south magnetic high that dis

rupts a east-west trending magnetic low that reflects the

east-west siliceous horizons, is a fault.

- Is a parallel conductor that maybe part of the same system.

- Over lies NSS-91-12 which may indicate 91-G is a part of 91-H.

NAA-91-I - Occurs along side 2 parallel magnetic highs, trending N-S.

- High inphase, low quadrature.

- Occurs in common with NSS-91-14

i i i) Magnetic Survey:

The field data is presented on two maps, Map No.: Iris-EW-91-

Mag-3W and Iris-EW-91-Mag-3E found in the back pockets of this report.

The magnetic data is illustrated as isomagnetic contours (contour interval:

100 gammas) on a map of corrected magnetic values recorded at each station.

The general magnetic trend appears to be in a northeast-southwest

direction with many north-south crosscutting structures evident. The area

between BL 0+00 and TL 32+00 E to the south has some very high magnetic

values and this is due primarily to the rock type occurring there. This

is a magnetic black mafic flows with pyroxene mineralization present.

Page 16: GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY REPORT HARKER AND ELLIOTT TOWNSHIPS ...€¦ · geophysical survey report of the perrex - iris j.v. project harker and elliott townships larder lake mining division

-10-

Th e inner volcanic flows mapped out on the regional geology

maps can clearly be seen and are disrupted approximately at 9+00 E on

L 4+00 N, L 8+00 N, L 12+00 N and L 16+00 N. Other prominent north south

structures occur at TL 32+00 E 16+00 N and diagonally cross to approxi

mately 42+00 E on L 20+00 S.

The syenite stock on L 0+00 at 32+00 E does not clearly show up

due to the interference of the highly magnetic flows which lie in contact

with the syenite at L 4+00 S 32 * 00 E to 36+00 E.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This survey provided some well needed information which was required

to locate and define north-south trending faults and cross-structures.

The previous surveys clearly indicated the general strike of the bedrock

but missed any north-south features. Work involving diamond drilling and stripping

has since turned up north-south faults, which have so far proven to have excellent

mineralization potential and are usually auriferous zones as well.

It was hoped this survey would clearly define the north-south structures

as it has and also indicate the east-west treading contacts.

It is where these structures meet that gold zones have been successfully

located.

The magnetic survey has provided some very strong targets but the general

trend was difficult to determine since the line spacing was 400 feet. It would be

highly recommended to combine the magnetic survey from both the east-west grid and

Page 17: GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY REPORT HARKER AND ELLIOTT TOWNSHIPS ...€¦ · geophysical survey report of the perrex - iris j.v. project harker and elliott townships larder lake mining division

-li

the north-south grid onto one map. The old north-south lines would have to be

retied into the new grid, since the new grid has been accurately tied into the

new surveyed pins and claim lines.

This present survey has already had a datumn of 400 gammas added to the

magnetic values. This will enable the values to be directly related to the old

survey and successfully tied together.

INTRODUCTION

The Iris group has sixteen (16) patented, three (3) unpatented

and one leased raining claim, plus a large leased single claim area which

used to be elevan staked mining claims. This contiguous claim group is

located in the southeast corner and northwest corner of Harker and Elliott

townships. The property is twenty-five (25) miles northeast of Kirkland

Lake, Ontario. You can reach the property by the Harker-Holloway mining

road (Highvay 627) which is east of Kirkland Lake and then north to the

Harker-Ell iott township line, and east on a dirt road. (See Figure la and

Figure Ib).

The claims are presently owned by John E. Perron, 103 Government

Road East, Kirkland Lake, Ontario.

A northwest-southeast baseline was established at L 0+00 at the

No. 3 pin of claim 9739 for 1600 feet north and 2000 feet south. Picket

lines were cut every 400 feet at right angles to the baseline, with marked

pickets 100 feet along the lines. Tie lines were cut at L 32+00 E, L 56+00 E

and L-76+00 E. At T L 56+00 E further lines were turned off at 24+00 S,

28+00 S, 32+OOS and 36+00 S.

The geology and prospecting was then completed by Alexander H.

Perron by compass and pace traverses using the picket lines as control

points. Only the western half of the property was prospected. The eastern

half will be considered at a later date.

GENERAL GEOLOGY

The bedrock is mostly mafic volcanics, with northeast-southwest

trending rhyolite flows and a small stock of coarse syenite.

The trend of the mafic flows appear to be northeast-southwest and

the most common mafic flow is a diabasic flow with a flow brecciated top.

The tops of these flows are facing south.

The other mafic flows can be andesite, basalt, pillow lavas,

diabasic lavas and some spherulitic lavas as well as some fragmental lavas

and tuffs. The shapes of the pillows indicate that the flows are facing

south.

The rhyolite flows range from 100 feet to 300 feet and strike

N 75 0 E. They have steep dips and face south. (These flows have since been

under dispute among reputed geologists and are now considered to be altered

inner flows of siliceous basalt.)

The syenite occurs as a very coarse syenite with large phenocrysts

of feldspars and also as a smaller fine grained syenite occurring on the

north boundary. (See Table l for the stratigraphic assemblage).

GEOLOGICAL FIELD SURVEY AND PROSPECTING HORK.

The field work was drawn up on the Map found at the back of the

report. For information not mentioned here refer to the plan map for

details.

The claims found in Harker township were covered by new growth

of poplar and spruce as well as some areas of replanted spruce. This area

was previously cut. The ground is dry with a gently sliping terrain of

glacial debris and some sand and gravel.

The areas covered in Elliott township are covered by a primary

mixture of spruce and balsam fir with large areas of alder and windblown

deadfall. Elliott township had more areas of wet sections caused mainly by

small brooks and beaver creeks and low runoffs.

Most of the outcrops found and examined were basalt and andesite.

They were massive fine grained to course diabasic flows. They had a massive

blocky texture and pyrite in a disseminated cube form was seen and was less

than W.

Flow breccia texture was found over the property. Classic textures

can be found on a large bald outcrop between L 4 S and L 8 S approximately

17 E. Inner flows between the lava flows and flow brecciated basalts were

seen about L 4 S l 8 W. The most important area prospected was an attempt

to follow the lower horizon of rhyolite/siliceous basalt which occurs about

the same place as L 8 S. The outcrop about L 8 S 14E to 20E was closely

examined and flow banding was noted in a hard dense fine grained grey to

black rock. This banding could be traced over a few feet across the rock.

Page 28: GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY REPORT HARKER AND ELLIOTT TOWNSHIPS ...€¦ · geophysical survey report of the perrex - iris j.v. project harker and elliott townships larder lake mining division

-4-

Vesicles were also noted, many of them filled with quartz. Flow ba

was also found just east of the baseline about L 8 S. Some old previous

unexamined trenches were located and flow banding was seen. An other old

trench was found north of L 8 S 24-W. It also had a dark grey-black very

hard massive rock, with a fine grained texture.

This same zone was located near L 4 N 4-W. Minor banding may have

been seen but mostly just quartz filled vesicles.

No more outcrop was found throughout the areas of Elliott township.

A large area occurring between L 4 N and L 4 S about 12 E to 20 E

was found to be the centre of the mafic flow. This texture was more coarse

with long black crystals of hornblende, very similar to a coarse diabase.

Some inner parts were nearly that of a grabbroic texture.

A complex series of fault was mapped out about L 8 N 16-E. This

was noted by piecing together the scattered outcrop and mapping out a space

between the northeast-southwest diabase dykes and the east-west rhyolitic

zones. The very massive diabasic flows appear to separate the rocks and

is cut off itself from any westerly extension.

CONCLUSIONS

The geological survey and prospecting work was performed for two

reasons, one of which was to properly locate the new east-west grid in

relation to the new boundary survey which was surveyed in the spring of

1991. The prospecting was done to try and figure out the inner layered

zones of rhyolHe/siliceous horizons between the basalt flows. Previous

Page 29: GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY REPORT HARKER AND ELLIOTT TOWNSHIPS ...€¦ · geophysical survey report of the perrex - iris j.v. project harker and elliott townships larder lake mining division

-5-

mapping by J. Satterly maps the rock as a rhyolite. Present day examina

tions have called the rock many different labels from a rhyolitic-chert

to an altered siliceous basalt. There has never been any serious prospect

ing carried out to try and determine what the rock is.

The conclusion made after finding some of the old trenches which

have never been prospected since the late 40's was that from physical

examination the rock was indeed an igneous volcanic rock primarily rhyolite.

The vesicles were very common and many were not filled. The bending was

very difficult to see and had probably lead to the misinterpretation of the

classification of the rock in the first place. From the surface, the banding

can in places indicate altered pillow structures which have the appearance

of being very warped. But after prospecting the zones the flowing lines

take on the appearance of flow banding.

This rock type was very difficult to class and samples were taken

and shipped off to Ottawa for chemical analysis. In particular neutron

activation analysis. As well thin sections are being prepared to further

assist in the proper classification of the rock. It may well be that only

by these methods will the rocks be properly identified.

Respectfully submitted,

March l, 1992 Alexander H. PerronProspector/President
