GEORGE MOCK OF HARRISON CO., IN BY JAMES P. MOCK

In previously published articles of the MFH we have fdlowed the migration and documentation of the family of George Mock and Sophia Muller. One of the biggest finds for this line was by Steve Lapp, when he discovered this family in the church records of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lancaster Ca,PA The church records provided the marriage of George and Sophia and the birth and/or christening dates for all of their children: Catherine, Daniel, Christopher, Christina, George and Susannah.

George and Sophia moved to the area of Middletown, Frederick Ca, VA in the mid-1700's where George died between 1803 and 1808. Catherine married Jeremiah Eberly before 1803 and they remained in Shenandoah Co. Daniel married Mary Hite 8 Feb 17% and they moved to Fairfield Co., OH before 1820. Christopher married Rosina Baker 14 Oct 1808 and died in the Shenandoah Valley in 1809. Rosina remained in the valley until her death about 1832. Christina married Jacob Harman 29 Oct 1797 and they moved to Montgomery Co, VA by 1804 where they remained until their deaths. George married Mary Gander 26 Aug 1802 and moved to Montgomery Co.,VA in 1803 where he remained until 1811.

We had previously been unable to locate George after 1811. Thanks to Lirette Randolph, who first noticed the coincidence between her George and Mary in Harrison Ca,IN and the George and Mary of Frederick CAI, V A, we now know that George and Mary moved on to Harrison Ga, IN in 1811 and their descendant's, like those of his brother Daniel, adopted the surname spelling of Muck. What follows is the documentation I have for George Mock and Mary Gander. I'm still working this family and documenting their descendants, as is Li retie Randcl ph. We welcome ccrrespondence on this line In a future article I will expand on the other children of George and Sophia, particularly the families that remained in the Shenandoah Valley area.

2 MOCK FAMILY HISTORIAN VOLUME 1V • NO. 1 • Winter 1995

George is listed in his father's Will dated 13 Sep 1803 (@1). His father related that George married a woman contrary to his father's wishes and was other wise disobedient, then leaves him only $1.

Gea•e's -marriage is listed in the Frederick Ca, VA marriage register. The bond identified Mary's father as Peter Gander and the bondsman as Jacob Gander. Jacob Gander is identified as a brother of Mary in The History and Genealogy of the Gander Families by Charles Harrison Gander_ This book also indicated Mary's marriage to George and provided Mary's birth information and her parent's information.

George first appears in Montgernery0a, VA in the personal property tax list of 1803 and appears yearly in these tax lists through 1811. George and Maria appear in the church records of the Zion Lutheran Church in Montgomery Ca, VA 14 Jul 1805 when they sponsored the baptism cf Benjamin Harman, son of Jacob Harman and Christina Mock (George's sister) (@2). George appears in a Montgomery Ca, VA probate inventory for Benjamin Widdle 20 Aug 1807 as a witness (@3). The probate also mentions debts to be collected by Jacob Harman. George is listed in the 1810 census of Montgomery Co, VA as George Muk, adjacent Jacob Harman, husband of his sister Christina.

In a Frederick Co. deed dated 22 Jun 1811 (04) George and Mary of Montgomery Co., V A sold seventeen acres near Belle Grove, Frederick Ca, VA to Isaac Hite. This land had been received by George from his brother C=hristopher who had received it from their father. Daniel Mock was one of the witnesses. The deed is followed by a court order indicating Mary was visited in Montgomery Co. to ensure the deed met with her approval. The witnesses to this deed included Daniel Mock and Peter & John Senseney. Peter Senseney, possibly a father of these two vs the same Peter, lived adjacent George's parents in Frederick Co., VA in 1779 (@5).

Documentation stating that George Mock and Mary Gander moved on to Indiana has not been found. However, an examination of the records involving George and Mary Mock/Mud( of Harrison C.o., IN and their connections to the Gander and Senseney famillies would indicate that they are the same George and Mary.

According to The Sensiney's of America by Barton Sensenig, Dr. Peter Senseney of Frederick Co., VA had sons John and Peter. According to the Frederick Ca, VA marriage records John Senseney married Nancy Gander 9 Jul 1790. John and Nancy had sons Peter, Samuel and Abraham who moved to Harrison C.o., N. All three of these sons appear in probate and deed records of Harrison Ca, IN.

The Ilistory and Gent:Edgy of the Gander - Families by Charles Harrison Gander, identified Nancy as a possible sister of Mary Gander (George Mock's wife). It also identifies another sister of Mary and Magdalena Gander who married first, John Pratt, and second,

Abraham 131ine, and that Magdalene and Abraham moved to Harrison Ca, IN by 1840.

George Mauck first appears in Harrison Co., IN in the 1811 property tax list on 26 Nov. for 160 acres in section 8, twp. 4, range 3. George also appears in the property tax lists for 1812, 1814 and 1817 for the same land. A review of the deed records of Harrison Ca, IN failed to locate the original purchase of this land. On 2 Jun 1818 George Mock purchased 50 acres in Harrison Ca, IN in section 18, twp. 5, range 5 (@6) and 100 acres in section 7, twp. 5, range 5 (@7). George appears in the 1820 and 1830 census of HarrisonCo.,IN. Mary appears in the 1840 census of Harrison Ca, IN.

In a Harrison Cc:1,1N Will dated 1 Sep 1837 and proved 18 Sep 1837 (@8) George Muck identifies his wife as Mary and their children as Elizabeth, John, Jacob, Samuel, Margaret wife of Henry Keller, and Nancy wife of Anthony Pitman. The administrator of this Will was Peter Senseney (son of Mary's sister Nancy).

George's land in section 8, twp. 4, range 3 was sold by some cf his children on 24 Aug 1839 (@9). Additional children sold this land 2 Jun 1839 (010), 8 Jun 1840 (@11) and 10 Jul 1843 (e12).

George and Mary are buried in the Hottel Cemetery, Washington Twp., Harrison Co., IN. Their tombstones provided their birth year and death dates. The birth years match that of those known to be the birthdates of George and Mary Mock. Their daughter, Rebecca, and her husband are also buried in the same cemetery.

Of interest is that John Maudc/Mauk, grandson of Peter Mauck of Frederick Co., VA also moved to Harrison Ca, IN and lived there at the same time as George and Mary. No connection has been found between the two families, although both families also appear in the church records of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Strasburg, Shenandoah Co., VA John's family is further detailed in The Descendant's cf Peter Mauck by William Wolph. Caution should be used when researching both these families as they lived in the same area and many of their children had the same names.

VOLUME 1V • NO. 1 • WINTER 1995 MOCK FAMILY HISTORIAN 3

SCHAEFFERSTOWN MOCKS BY STEVE LAPP

The following genealogy is compiled from data in A Brief _History of Schaefferstown by A S. Brendle in 1901, and can be found at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. I have not confirmed this genealogy with original records, but it corresponds with the records of St. Lukes Evangelical Lutheran Church records in Heidelberg Twp., Lebanon County, PA (was Lancaster Co. prior to 1813) as they appear in the International Genealogical Index from the Family History Library. It also conforms to the 1850 Census records. To this genealogy I have added marriages and other data found in the Biosraphical Annals of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania printed in 1904 by J.H. Beers & Cu

Henry Mock appears on a 1782 list of taxables for Heidelberg Twp. as owning 150 acres. Henry and Eva Mock first appear as a couple in 1766 records of the Heidelberg Reformed and Lutheran Church, which later became St. Lukes Evangelical Lutheran Church at Schaefferstown. This was the birth record of their son, Adam An earlier record at that same church is for the christening of Catarina Agata Mok on 26 Feb 1764 -Father, I Iennri ch Mok, no mother recorded. Since I find no evidence to prove this Hennrich Mok is the same as Henry Mock married to Eva, I have left Catarina out of the genealogy, as did A S. Brendle. Henry and Eva Mock christened another son, John George Mock, born 25 Feb 1773, with sponsors recorded as George and Sophia Mock. This George and Sophia Mock family is recorded in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church records at Warwick Township, about 8 miles from Schaefferstown. George and Sophia were discussed in the MFH, second issue, Oct 1991 and again in the August 1992 issue. Their descendants in Virginia have been further traced by James P. Mock, researcher for the MFH. W e speculate that there is a close relationship between Henry Mock and George Mock - quite possibly brothers

John W. Maud( was born 16 Nov 1834, Page Cu,VA, the son of Joel Maud( and Magdalene (Polly) Li on berger.

From Page in the OW War by H.M. Strickler, : "John W. Mauck a member of Ca K, 10th VA Inf., left a diary which he kept from the day he entered the army until he was killed. He was a son of Joel Maud(, owner of Mauck's Mill (now Kauffman's). He died in battle August 8, 1862 at Cedar Run or Slaughter Mountain. We quote freely from his diary through the Valley Campaign. The reader will see the campaign from the viewpoint of a lieutenant."

May 7 - Started early this morning and about 2 o'clock drove about two of the enemy regiments from their positions on the west side of the Shenandoah Mountains and captured all their camp equipage and commissaries

and followed them on then retired and camped in the old camp.

May 8 - Pursued the Yankees this morning, came up with them in the evening at Sitting Tree Hill (he means Sislington Hill) near McDowell, where they have made a stand. Commenced the attack about 4 o'clock in the evening, fighting ended at 8 o'clock. Col. Gibbons was killed, some 25 killed and wounded in the 10th Regiment. Capt. Parks wounded. The enemy surprised our pickets and got possession of the bridge (at Port Republic) and cutting General Jackson off from his command, but when he saw the situation rode up and commanded them to turn the cannon the other way, then he and his aides dashed through and across the bridge and galloped up the hill ordering his men out double quick to the bridge, our brigade recaptured the bridge, took one piece of cannon and several prisoners General Ewell engaged the enemy this evening on the north side of the river and after a hard fight drove him back several miles with a heavy loss on both sides. This is the battle in which we last General Ashby, one of our leading cavalry generals at this time

June 9 - (Monday) - Jackson engaged the enemy this morning on the south side of the river and after a hard

fight completely routed them, capturing several pieces of cannon and several hundred prisoners.

a DIARY - Cont'd (ran page 6

Aug. 1 - The first of the month. A very warm day. Drilling as usual. Plenty of ladies at dress parade this evening.

Aug. 2 - Still dear and warm. On drill as usual. A fight took place today at Orange C.H. between ours and the Yankee pickets. Enemy driven back.

Aug. 3 - Sunday. Still warm and dear. Heavy shower in the evening, August 4 - Drill as usual. Brigade drill in the evening. Our company on guard duty.

August 5th - Warm as usual. Brigade drill in the evening, orders to march at 5 o'clock in the morning. August 6th - Left camp at 5 o'clock this morning. Marched to our old camp below Gordonsville. Very warm today.

August 7th - orders today to cook two days rations. March at 4 o'clock this morning in the direction of Orange C.H. Wagons left behind. Camped one-half mile of Orange CH.

August 8th - Up early this morning, all of Jackson's Army in motion. I suppose we are moving onto attack Gen. Pope. Cross Rapidan River. Prisoners coming in every hour.

This ends my uncle's account of his travels and maneuvers, from the time Co. K left Luray, VA for the seat of war as a soldier and I think it as true history of the movements of the company as has ever been written. I was an eye witness to most of it myself and I can say that all of the old soldiers living and that were present can bear me out in saying there never marched in the ranks of the Confederate army a braver soldier than Lieutenant John W. Mauck.

His camp life was one that was peaceful and quiet, always ready for duty and I do say was as much liked by his comrades as any man in the company. He and the writer were fast friends and kinsmen, both in peace as well as in war and have but little doubt that when the last roll is called over on the other shore Uncle John will be there to answer to his name.

As a citizen - a young man, he and I were always together after I became of the age to run around and I have no remembrance of ever witnessing a bad act of any kind what ever that he ever participated in. It is said too that a good soldier is always a good citizen and this could be said of John W. Maude, who was killed in the battle of Cedar Maintain, August the 8th, 1862, just after he wrote the last dause in his Diary, August 8, 1962. • E.V.
