Seniors providinggood leadership,Coach Kane says

By ANNE BERLEANTBLUE HILL—With a core of four

returning seniors—Finn McMahon-Allwine,Cooper Smallidge, Tyler Webber andAnthony Bianco, the Eagles baseball team isgetting in shape for the season, Coach DanKane said.

“The seniors are providing good leadershipand play very important roles in the line up.”

Bianco is returning as pitcher, as arejuniors Kelsey Allen and Will Ricker. Theyare joined by returning varsity players suchas junior Harrrison Vinall, giving “moredepth on the pitching staff and in positionplayers,” Kane said.

In an early practice game againstNarraguagus, the Eagles won 7-1 playing ontheir home field.

“We have looked pretty good in the pre-season scrimmages,” Kane commented.

The team went 10-6 last season headinginto the playoffs, where they lost in the quar-terfinals to Bucksport.

“We proved we were one of the better teamsin the league,” Kane said after the seasonended. This year, the “goal is to be a solidplay-off team with a chance to go deep.”

Coach Nile: ‘Thisyear they’re reallygoing to play’

By ANNE BERLEANTBLUE HILL—The Eagles softball team

roster shows one particular characteristic—not one senior player is listed.

“I think they’re young,” said Coach ChrisNile. “And they’re hard workers.”

I have a couple of veterans who haveplayed for me the last two years,” Nilecontinued, speaking of junior KassandraRouff and sophomore Olivia Stevenson.“And I’ve got four pitchers returning; theyall look really good.”

Behind home plate, Nile has a new, untested catcher in freshman Morgan Dauk.

“She wants to be the best catcher we’vehad,” Nile said. “She kind of pusheseveryone else.”

In a scrimmage game at home on April 14,the girls crushed Narraguagus with 16 runswhile allowing their opponents to score onlyone.

“Seeing that game…it’s the best they’veplayed,” said Nile, who has been holding thefirst practices indoors because of weatherand the GSA field condition.

The girls are batting better than inprevious years, Nile said, pointing especiallyto junior Andrea Simmons. “Andrea’sbatting has already improved from last yearto this year so much,” he said.

What does the team need to work on?

“Base running,” said Nile. “The new [girls]haven’t played a lot, so that’s a big thing.”

Even with a younger team, Nile is lookingfor them to go deeper into the playoffs thanthey have in the last two years.

“My first year we didn’t make it, last yearwe went in at eight,” he said, before losing inthe quarterfinals to top-ranked Calais.

“This year, I think we should go in[ranked] at six,” Nile said. “I think we havethe potential to do it, if the girls put ittogether. I think they will.”

By ANNE BERLEANTBLUE HILL—With a combination of

Junior Clare Xin and sophomore AbigailFrost are in the second doubles spot, whilejuniors Katama Murray and Linda Zhang

and sophomores Jenna Gray and HunterMorris are varsity alternate players.

“I’m very optimistic we’ll have asuccessful season,” Farrar said. “I thinkwe’ll be very competitive.”

Goal is to qualify forNew England Fleet RacingChampionships

By ANNE BERLEANTBLUE HILL—The goal for the Eagles is

to qualify for the O’Day Regatta, which isthe season’s New England Fleet RacingChampionships, Coach Tom Gutow said. “Ithink we have one of the stronger teams asfar as team depth.”

The Eagles travel from Portland to CapeCod to Marblehead, Massachusetts tocompete in New England Schools SailingAssociation regattas.

The team also hosts regattas against localteams out of Maine Maritime Academy, andcompetes locally at Mount Desert Island. The regatta held on MDI on April 9 “wentwell,” Gutow said. In windy conditions, “wesplit the [races].”

The Downeast Regatta, which the Eagleshost, brings teams from New England andMaine to Castine Harbor for two days ofracing. It’s always a goal for the Eagles to dowell there, Gutow said.

Seniors Gordon Lameyer, Nicholas

Steenberg and Cecily Page skipper, withClover Slagle, Cedar Slagle, Dillon Moreyand Keenan Hilsinger as crew.

The girls also race to qualify for a chanceto compete in the women’s Herreshoff Cupin Hyannis. In the first qualifier, held onApril 6 at Tabor Academy in Massachusetts, windy conditions and lack of time on thewater kept skippers Cecily Page and CorinneSteenberg and crew Cedar Slagle and CloverSlagle from a qualifying finish.

But there are two more qualifying regattasand Gutow thinks they have a chance, even ifthe winds are rough. “With more practice, Ithink our girls will be equal to sailing in highwinds,” he said.

Coach Reed: ‘We’rebuilding our team’

By ANNE BERLEANTBLUE HILL—With 10 more track team

members than last year, this year’s team isthe largest and youngest, with an excellentcore of freshmen, said Coach Erich Reed.

“We have a young sort of team,”continued Reed. “Probably two-thirds of theteam are freshmen.”

Many of those have graduated from theBlue Hill Consolidated School trackprogram, and are “coming with goals tobegin with.”

Middle distance runner Alice Dillon, ajunior, is the team’s returning scorer at lastyear’s state meet, but she should have morecompany this year, Reed said, includingseniors Devon Oppedisano (hurdles), PhilipShaheen (middle distance), Andre Reinero(sprints), Chelsey Staples (throws), andStephen Krichels (jumps).

Last year, the Eagles placed 10th overallout of 33 teams at the state championships, with 4x400 meter relay team of Alice Dillon,Madison Cole, Sage Shaheen and LucyJakub placing fifth. Reed expects both the4x400 and 4x800 meter teams to performwell this year.

Senior Aphelion Crampton is also strongat the high jump, he said, and a new event forthe team is the pole vault.

The team has “a strong sense of owner-ship,” Reed said. “They have been focusedand motivated, not deterred by the earlyseason weather.”
