George was born on February 22, 1732 in this house in Virginia. His family had a farm.

George’s father died when he was 11. George went to live with his half brother Lawrence.

He fought in the French and Indian War and then served in the Virginia government.

He married Martha Custis in 1759. Martha was a widow.

When the American colonies decided to declare their freedom from England, they asked George to lead their army.

George and his soldiers fought for many years, in the winter and in the summer.

When the war finally ended, the 13 Colonies were now free from England. The United States of America was born.

George became the first president of the United States and served for eight years.

After being President, George moved back to Mt. Vernon to live. He died in 1799. He was 67 years old.

George Washington helped lead his people to fight to be free from England.
