S he’s desired by all and is an object of fascination for the soldiers on guard duty as they smoke and play cards: Carmen. The soldier Don José is ordered to detain
her after a fight but she twists him around her finger. He is arrested for his weakness but is soon released. He sees the flower she threw at him as a token of her love and dreams of spending his life with her, even at the cost of losing his rank and status. He hides out with her band of smugglers, ignores Micaëla’s words of warning, and even imagines he’s more than a match for Escamillo, the swaggering bullfighter. The latter, however, has long since captured Carmen’s heart, making Don José mad with jealousy ...
George Bizet’s most successful opera is directed by Kasper Holten, Director of Opera at the Royal Opera House in Lon-don. It will be staged with a set designed by British artist Es Devlin, who has designed sets for pop stars like Adele, U2, the Pet Shop Boys and Kanye West.

Moses causes darkness to envelop Egypt in order to finally bring about the Israelites’ release from capti-vity. The Pharaoh eventually relents and proclaims
they will be set free. His son, however, doesn’t want to lose a Hebrew girl he is secretly in love with and incites a key mover to make the Pharaoh change his mind. His plan works. So Moses prays to his God for a more brutal kind of help.
For this rarely staged opera, the Dutch director Lotte de Beer has teamed up with the theatre company Hotel Modern – which conjures up its own reality using filmed objects and miniature puppets – to present the biblical tale of plagues and the parting of the Red Sea on the Bregenz stage.

A young boy says he wants to travel by boat to the light- house. »Yes, of course,« his mother responds, »if it's fine tomorrow«. But father cuts them short by saying,
»It won't be fine". The boy wishes there was an axe handy so he could kill his father on the spot.
Thoughts and feelings, unarticulated and unutterable – inner voices like these form the core of Virginia Woolf's novel To the Lighthouse. Music creates the space in which what is unsayable can resonate. These possibilities fascinate the Greek composer Zesses Seglias, and together with the stage director and author Ernst Marianne Binder he has written an opera based on To the Lighthouse. An open window on the creative process has been offered at a series of insight sessions organised by the Opera Workshop at Kunsthaus Bregenz and starting in May 2015, and now the finished opera will receive its world premiere.

THE MARRIAGEOF FIGARO

Figaro’s bride-to-be Susanna is supposed to spend the first night not with him, but with the count he works for? Figaro uses all his cunning and exploits the con-
fused emotional state of the people around him, to prevent the count from exercising his peculiar aristocratic privilege. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera contains comic scheming, erotic recklessness and political dynamite.
After Così fan tutte in 2015 and Don Giovanni in 2016, the first of the three Mozart-Da Ponte operas will be performed by young singers in the Bregenz Festival‘s Opera Studio. Staged at Vorarlberger Landestheater, the work will be directed by Jörg Lichtenstein, who thus returns to Bregenz after his celebra-ted production of Così fan tutte.

When Hebrew and Arabic speakers talk about the political situation in the Middle East, they refer to it simply as »the situation«. Resident director
at Berlin‘s Maxim Gorki Theater, Yael Ronen, puts her last piece development into a German language course in the Neukölln district. The course participants have all come to Berlin in recent years. From Syria, where war has raged since 2011. From Israel and Palestine, where the political and social climate has been growing ever more militant. No wonder, then, that in German teacher Stefan’s class German grammar poses the least problem of all. Yael Ronen and actors who have come to Berlin from Syria, Palestine and Israel explore the paradoxes of re-encountering »neighbours« as well as ghosts from their past.

Greed, power, servitude, love, deceit, murder, betrayal, downfall – Richard Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung brings all the passions and calamities of
human life onto the stage. The Dutch theatre company Hotel Modern, which is staging the opera Moses in Egypt at the Festspielhaus, transforms Wagner’s gigantic work into a fascinating piece of miniature theatre set in the world of insects. The story that spans four evenings in the original is here told compactly in 90 minutes, while Wagner’s colossal score is played by 21 instrumentalists. In Wagner’s operas, the Nibelung Alberich can change shape using the »tarnhelm«, and many insects do that too in this version: the caterpillar metamorphosing into a butterfly, the nymph into a grasshopper. Whereas three Rhine Maidens guard the gold in Wagner, Hotel Modern have three jellyfish guarding an already forged ring.
All the marionettes, puppets and landscapes for the production have been created with great love of detail by Hotel Modern. These actors and backdrops will be filmed live and projected on a magnified scale during the perfor-mance. A highly unusual piece of music theatre.
