Georges River Council is hosting a number of great events, activities and exhibitions across the local area over the next few months, at Hurstville Library Museum & Gallery, and Kogarah Library and Cultural Centre.

Hurstville Museum & Gallery has some terrific exhibitions, including the national award winning exhibition St George Stories: people - places - community. This exhibition explores the history and culture of the St George area, from the earliest people to present day communities. It is a fantastic display for all ages, where senior members of the community can reminisce on the past, younger people can learn about the history and change over the years, and everyone has the opportunity to learn something new.

Hurstville Library is hosting an exciting school holiday program for children, which includes movie screenings, games afternoons, writing workshops, arts and crafts and much more. Council’s holiday activities tend to be very popular so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment.

The much-loved Discovery Festival of Community Arts will be returning in October. This colourful event proudly showcases local community arts and cultural projects. If you enjoy learning about other cultures, this event will definitely be for you.

Our popular digital literacy training program, Tech Savvy Seniors, will commence in August at both Kogarah and Hurstville libraries. This valuable initiative designed to help senior members of the community develop their digital literacy skills.

Community members will also have the opportunity to enrol in a 12 week introduction to digital media course which will cover an introduction to digital media platforms such as Google Docs, blogs and online photo editing programs.

Hurstville Entertainment Centre will host some unique events for music lovers, including the Hurstville record and collectibles fair and tribute show Always… Patsy Cline, a musical which includes 27 of the late singer’s unforgettable hits.

We haven’t forgotten our youngest audiences with Play School live in concert: Humpty’s showtime and The Listies: 6D set to thrill our junior residents.

I encourage everyone to get involved with the many activities and events that are on offer over the next few months.

For more information about upcoming events and activities run by Georges River Council, please contact Council at any time on 9330 6400 or send an email to [email protected].

FIRST PEOPLE OF THE GEORGES RIVERTHE GEORGES RIVER CONTINUES TO BE A SIGNIFICANT VENUE CELEBRATING THE EXPRESSION OF ABORIGINAL IDENTITY AND CULTURE.

Rising in the upland swamps of the O’Hares Creek catchment at Appin, the languid Georges River, formerly known as Tucoerah River, weaves an aimless path some 80 kilometres to the north east, flowing into the waters of Botany Bay at Taren Point. The land on each side of the river was in the traditional ownership of Aboriginal people at the time of European arrival, the people of the Dharug language group being custodians of the northern shore and the Dharawal speaking people on the southern side. Whilst the ensuing collision with European culture was to profoundly affect Indigenous life, Aboriginal people maintained an enduring engagement with the river, its bountiful waters and fertile surrounds providing its first people with a means of transport, livelihood and cherished sanctuary.

Prominent among the Aboriginal people living on the Georges River in the 1800s was Biddy Giles who resided with her English husband, Billy, on a property in the vicinity of Guragurang, later known as Mill Creek, a southern tributary of the river. A Dharawal speaking woman, Biddy travelled throughout the Dharawal region which extended from the Georges River to the Five Islands area near Wollongong. The Giles’ hospitality was acknowledged in a published recollection of 1911 in which the couple were recognised as ‘guides, philosophers, and friends to a party of us who, in 1866… came down the Georges River from the Liverpool Dam in the Giles’ boat’. Biddy’s familiarity with Dharawal land and lore enabled her role as a guide to visiting parties, who she led on extensive tours of the river and its environs. Having previously lived in the Five Islands area where she had two daughters, Ellen and Rosie with her then husband Paddy Burragalang, Biddy later left Mill Creek in the wake of Billy’s death and ultimately relocated further eastward on the river at Kogarah Bay.

In the early decades of the twentieth century, Biddy’s daughter Ellen was instrumental in the establishment of a vibrant Aboriginal community which thrived on the banks of Salt Pan Creek, a northern tributary of the Georges River at Peakhurst. Centred on adjoining properties owned by Ellen and neighbour William Rowley, the community prospered on riverside land believed to have sustained Indigenous people for centuries. William Rowley, an Aboriginal man born on the southern shore of the Georges River at Pelican Point, Kurnell, maintained an ongoing association with the river throughout his life, deriving a livelihood as a fisherman in Botany Bay and adjacent waters. Ellen’s husband, Hugh Anderson, was also an Aboriginal fisherman, said to have fished the Georges River for two decades during which time Ellen engaged with the floral beauty of the shoreline, imparting her knowledge of the river country to younger family members whilst harvesting its abundant wildflowers which were sold at the city markets.

By 1926, the Salt Pan Creek community consisted of three weatherboard cottages and a number of accompanying buildings which sprawled over the 1.2 hectare site, providing a home to 30 people. The burgeoning community, supported by the produce

of the river, attracted Aboriginal people whose children attended local schools and actively engaged with the people of the residential neighbourhood of the surrounding area. Many of those drawn to Salt Pan Creek sought refuge from the interference of government agencies seeking to restrict the movement and activities of Indigenous people. As the community flourished so did the voice of its members whose advocacy for Aboriginal social justice sponsored a political activism which was to be carried forth by ensuing generations. Among those advocating for justice was Joe Anderson, the son Ellen and Hugh, who in 1933, having adopted the title of King Burraga in deference to his maternal grandfather, called for a corroboree of Aboriginal people emphasising the need to improve Indigenous living conditions and claiming ‘there is also plenty fish in the river for us all’.

Fed by numerous tributaries on its path to the sea, the Georges River supports a myriad of diverse habitats along its course. For countless generations these flowing waters have fostered both the material and spiritual needs of its Indigenous inhabitants. More recently, the waters of the Georges River have been the locale for a confluence of culture between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people as urban development proliferates along the river. Despite the undeniable trauma suffered by Aboriginal people as a consequence of this ongoing development, the Georges River has continued to be a significant venue celebrating the expression of Aboriginal identity and culture.

RIVERWOODThe suburb of Riverwood, bounded by the Georges River tributary of Salt Pan Creek, proudly occupies the north western corner of the Georges River Local Government Area. However, prior to becoming Riverwood, the area was known at various times as both Peakhurst and Herne Bay.

In April 1919, 90 farmlets, said to be ideal for orchards and general farming, were to be auctioned as part of the Herne Bay Estate, Great Salt Pan. The estate extended to the shores of Herne Bay, a small inlet of the nearby Salt Pan Creek, which is believed to have derived its name from Herne Bay in Kent, England.

A decade later, when railway authorities were considering the name of the new station on the proposed Tempe – East Hills Railway, Herne Bay was favoured over Peakhurst and Salt Pan. Indeed, at the opening of the railway between Kingsgrove and East Hills in December 1931, Herne Bay officially became the title by which the area would be known for the next quarter of a century.

The residents and business people of Herne Bay sought to change the name of the area in 1954, principally due to the presence of the nearby public housing settlement which was considered ‘not to add lustre to the district’. The housing precinct was a former military hospital site occupied by Allied units during the Second World War which had been converted by state government authorities to provide emergency housing in the post war years. Despite the alternative names of Avonlea, Forrest Hills, Warinna and Ferndale being offered, Peakhurst was ultimately accepted as the preferred option for consideration. However, when railway authorities refused to rename the local station, the proposal faltered.

Following the creation of the Herne Bay Change of Name Committee, an attempt to convince authorities to accept Riverwood as the suburb’s new name began in 1957. Citing the approval of other relevant government departments, the Secretary for Railways duly agreed to rename Herne Bay Railway Station, as did postal authorities who officially recognised Riverwood Post Office in the early months of 1958.

Benefiting from constructive change wrought over successive decades, Riverwood has blossomed into a vibrant, multicultural suburb enriched by the redevelopment of its public housing precinct. The suburb combines a harmonious fusion of modern residential areas, commercial enterprise, schools and places of worship, with extensive recreational and community facilities.

author talk with hugh mackay BEYOND BELIEF: HOW WE FIND MEANING, WITH OR WITHOUT RELIGION

Hear one of Australia’s most respected authors, Hugh Mackay, talk about his new book, Beyond belief: how we find meaning, with or without religion. At a time when 61 percent of Australians still identify as Christian but only eight percent attend church weekly, Hugh tackles one of the big questions about contemporary Australia: how do we find our sense of meaning and purpose when religious faith and practice are in such sharp decline? And why are enrolments at religious schools skyrocketing? He draws on research suggesting that our quest for a meaningful life depends on believing in something ‘greater than ourselves’ and explores what that ‘something’ might be for today’s Australians. Hugh Mackay is a social researcher and the author of 17 books, including six novels and 11 in the field of social analysis and ethics. He is a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society and has been awarded honorary doctorates by Charles Sturt University, Macquarie University, University of New South Wales and University of Western Sydney. In 2015 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.

There will be an opportunity to purchase his new book and have it signed. Tuesday 27 September7.00pm - 8.00pmKogarah Library and Cultural CentreBookings essentialwww.kogarah.nsw.gov.au/library | 9330 9527

an award winning exhibition: ST GEORGE STORIES

    Hurstville Museum & Gallery

Hurstville Museum & Gallery’s new permanent exhibition, St George stories: people - places - community, is now a national award-winning display. The Museums and Galleries National Awards (MAGNAs) recognise excellent work and best practice in the categories of exhibition, public programs and sustainability projects. At the 2016 MAGNAs, St George stories won in the category for Permanent Exhibition or Gallery Fitout – Level 1.

In the two years prior, Hurstville Museum & Gallery undertook the redesign of its historical exhibition. This project aimed to bring the permanent display in line with contemporary practice, making the exhibition more engaging and accessible through changes to both content and design. St George stories was unveiled in November 2015.

The exhibition explores the history and culture of the St George area, from the earliest people to present day communities, and how life has changed over the years. The public can engage with a variety of stories through multimedia and interactive displays, and discover old photographs from the local studies collection in the Snapshot Gallery.

The permanent exhibition has been redesigned in a way that strengthens links with the school curriculum and has created an environment that is more conducive to learning. Education programs include fun and interactive excursions for primary

and high schools that provide students with a hands-on learning experience. Museum on the move outreach kits are also available for hire, giving students the opportunity to handle and analyse authentic historical artefacts in their own classrooms.

St George stories also encourages reminiscence and is a valuable tool for seniors groups and caregivers. Guided tours of the exhibition are specially designed for the elderly and those with low mobility, and provide a stimulating and engaging experience. The Museum & Gallery also offers Reminiscence therapy sessions and object kits. These sessions allow groups to interact with objects from the past, encouraging emotional responses and providing a focus for the recollection of memories.

To book in for any of the St George stories programs please contact Hurstville Museum & Gallery on 9330 6444 or [email protected]
