HEAD COACHMARK BYINGTON Mark Byington was named Georgia Southern's 13th head men’s basketball coach April 1, 2013. Has led the Eagles to two top-3 finishes in their three seasons in the Sun Belt. Led the Eagles to a 22-9 mark, a second-place finish in the Sun Belt and the Sun Belt Championship title game in 2014-15. It was the first 20-win season since 2005-06 and the Eagles' first conference championship game appearance since 1992. Won the 2015 Whack Hyder Georgia College Coach of the Year Award, joining his mentor Bobby Cremins, and former Eagle coaches Jeff Price and Frank Kerns as recipients. Named National Association of Basketball Coaches District 24 Coach of the Year and chosen by NBC Sports as the Sun Belt Coach of the Year. Earned his 50th career victory when the Eagles topped ULM 66-51 Jan. 16, 2016. Led the Eagles to a 15-19 mark in 2013-14 and took Georgia South-ern to its first SoCon Semifinals since 2005 in debut season. Every senior has graduated since Byington joined the Eagles in the spring of 2013. Joined the Eagles after a one-year stint at Virginia Tech in 2012-13. Coached seven seasons at College of Charleston under legendary Head Coach Bobby Cremins. Was named Interim Head Coach at College of Charleston in 2012 for the final 11 games of the season. Earned a 7-4 record over that span, including a victory over Kent State in an ESPN Bracketbusters Game. The 2017 first-team All-Sun Belt selections are the fourth-highest scoring returning duo in the country. They were the third-highest freshman scoring duo in the country in 2015-16 (1-Rice's Marcus Evans and Marquez Letcher-Ellis, 2- FSU's Dwayne Bacon and Malik Beasley).3 - Georgia Southern's top-3 seasons in 3-pointers made and attempted have all come during Mark Byington's tenure. GS ranked first in the SBC in threes per game (9.2) and 31st in the country last season, and the Eagles made 10 or more threes in a game 15 times. GS's .362 percentage from long distance was the eighth-highest in school history. GS made 11 triples in the opener at Wake Forest, 13 vs. Bluefield State and 10 against Missouri State.

TEAM STORYLINES• Mark Byington is coaching in his 148th career game today and his 137th at Georgia Southern. His 51 wins in his first three seasons at Georgia Southern were the best of any coach in the modern era. He posted a 7-4 record at College of Charleston in 2012, filling in as the interim coach for Bobby Cremins.• Under Mark Byington, Georgia Southern is 52-11 in games when leading at half and 61-6 when leading with five minutes to go.• The Eagles' 85-83 victory at Wake Forest was their first over an ACC opponent since topping Virginia Tech 83-78 on the road in 2012. LAST TIME OUT• Darrell Brown scored 19 points, and Bradley held Geor-gia Southern to a season-low 29 percent shooting from the field to earn a 62-57 victory over the Eagles Saturday afternoon in Carver Arena.• Mike Hughes recorded 16 points and four rebounds for Georgia Southern, and Jake Allsmiller finished with 14 points and four boards. GS held Bradley to 34 percent shooting but made just 4-of-27 from 3-point range.• Donte Thomas tallied 10 points and seven rebounds for Bradley, while Elijah Childs collected 11 rebounds and Koch Bar had 14.• GS trailed by 11 midway through the second half but used a 12-4 spurt, sparked by five points from Hughes, which cut the margin to 53-50. The Eagles had a chance to trim the deficit further but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 from the free-throw line with 3:20 to go.• Bradley held GS to 1-for-8 from the field over the last 4:06 while outscoring the Eagles 12-4. • The Eagles were whistled for 17 of the 27 fouls called in the first half, and Bradley made 19 of 36 from the free-throw line in the contest.

TOUGH SCHEDULE• The Eagles will play non-conference games against three teams that won 20-plus games last year and two NCAA tournament participants. A total of four opponents had RPIs inside the top-60 in 2016-17, and Georgia Southern began the season with consecutive wins against two of them in Wake Forest and CSU Bakersfield.• A four-game road trip that will encompass 13 days and 6,057 miles is set for December. The Eagles play at George Mason (Dec. 12), CSU Bakersfield (Dec. 16), Kennesaw State (Dec. 19) and ETSU (Dec. 22) during the stretch.• The Eagles played 10 of their first 12 games away from home in 2016-17. The stretch ended Dec. 20 at Winthrop, which also capped a four-game road trip that covered 4,120 miles of travel as the Eagles went from Minnesota to Ft. Myers to Miami to South Carolina and back home.

NBA SCHEDULE• The Eagles will play a home-and-home series with cross-country opponent CSU Bakersfield. The Roadrun-ners play in Hanner Fieldhouse Nov. 16, and GS returns the game Dec. 16. It will be the first meetings between the Eagles and Roadrunners.• The Eagles split a home-and-home series with Florida Gulf Coast last season. GS also played a home-and-home series with Campbell in the 2013-14 season. The Eagles lost both against the Fightin' Camels.

TEAM CAPTAINS• Mike Hughes, Coye Simmons, Jake Allsmiller, Tookie Brown and Ike Smith have been named the 2017-18 captains in a vote by the team.• Hughes is a captain for the third straight year, Allsmiller is a captain for the second season and Brown is a captain for the second straight year.

CAROLINA CONNECTIONS• Five Eagles hail from North Carolina. • Seniors Mike Hughes and Coye Simmons are from Winston-Salem, N.C., and played at Winston-Salem Prep.• Senior B.J. Gladden, redshirt sophomore Jared Hamilton and junior transfer Simeon Carter are from Charlotte. Gladden played at Olympic High School and Hamilton played at Davidson Day and Cannon School. • Carter, who is sitting out the campaign because of NCAA transfer rules, played at West Charlotte.

WAITING IN THE WINGS• Junior Simeon Carter will sit out the 2017-18 campaign after transferring from Iowa State following his sopho-more season.• He averaged nine points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 29.5 minutes a game and started all 30 games he played in. Hamilton reached double figures in 13 contests and scored a season-high 21 points to go along with nine rebounds in 40 minutes against Tennessee State.

first on a Georgia Southern roster since Emmett Smith played for the Eagles from 1989-91.• His high school coach, Willie Reese, and AAU coach, James Forrest, both played four seasons at Georgia Tech for legendary coach Bobby Cremins, who served as Byington’s mentor at College of Charleston.• Byington brought in 6-foot-11 Wyatt Sikora, who transferred after his freshman season from Jacksonville and was set to play in the 2015-16 season, but he was forced to retire from basketball after a medical condition was discovered during preseason medical testing.• Krzysztof Janiszewski, who played for the Eagles from 2006-10, was 6-foot-11.

A STAFF OF HEAD COACHES• In addition to head coach Mark Byington, assistant coach Ben Betts has experience in the first chair.• Betts compiled a 52-41 record at South Carolina State from 2003-06. His squad won the MEAC regular-season title after posting an 18-11 record in 2003-04.

APPLES AND TREES• Two Eagle student-athletes' fathers played college basketball.• Jake Allsmiller's dad, Brian, played at Vanderbilt (1978-81) and Shawn O'Connell's father, Dave, played at Duke (1973-76). O'Connell's younger brother, Alex, is a freshman on the Duke basketball team.

FREE HOOPS• Georgia Southern is 36-42 in overtime contests and 4-6 in its last 10.• The Eagles were 1-1 in overtime games in each of the last two seasons and are 1-0 this year after topping South Alabama 84-79 Jan. 9, 2017.

HURRICANE RELIEF• Georgia Southern and Augusta squared off in a charity exhibition men's basketball contest to raise awareness and financial support for hurricane relief efforts Friday, Nov. 3, in Christenberry Fieldhouse. • Proceeds from the "Storm the Berry" game were donated to the American Red Cross to assist victims of the recent hurricanes that have occurred recently in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Supported by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), the NCAA allowed schools to apply for a waiver for a special additional exhibition contest to benefit relief efforts.

BOARDING THE MOTHERSHIP• Georgia Southern's home contest against Georgia State in Hanner Fieldhouse will air live on ESPN2 Friday, Feb. 16, at 9 p.m. ET. • In addition, the Eagles' matchup at Troy Dec. 29 is a possibility for an ESPN wildcard game. The network will select a Sun Belt game to air on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. ET at minimum 22 days prior to Dec. 29.• In total, 10 Eagle Sun Belt games will air on ESPN3 or ESPN2, and non-conference games at Wake Forest (ACC Extra), Bradley (ESPN3) and Kennesaw State (ESPN3) will also be carried.
