Snow shovelling can gift you with pain that keeps on giving, and sometimes won’t go away for weeks, or even months. Repeatedly raising the arm when shovelling snow and lifting that snow-filled shovel above the level of your shoulder can lead to several common back injuries.

Here are some easy tips to ensure a pain-free winter:Don’t let the snow pile up:• If the weather report calls for several days of snow, frequent shovelling will allow you to move smaller amounts of snow at once. It’s far less strenuous in the long run.Pick the right shovel:• Use a lightweight pusher-type shovel. If you are using a metal shovel, spray it with Teflon first, so snow won’t stick to it.Push, don’t throw:• Always push the snow to the side rather than throw it. That way you avoid lift-ing heavy shovelfuls of snow, and sudden twist-ing or turning movements.Bend your knees:• As with any heavy object, you need to use your knees, leg and arm muscles to

do the pushing and lifting, while keeping your back straight.Take a break:• If you feel tired or short of breath, stop and take a rest. Shake out your arms and legs. Stop shovelling immediately if you feel chest or back pain. If you have back pain that is severe or that persists for more than a day after shovel-ling, see a chiropractor. If you have chest pain that is severe, see a doctor immediately.

Factors to consider when choosing a neighborhood

When shopping for a home, it’s easy for buyers to fall in love with a property. A well-maintained home with updated features can be hard to resist, but buyers must consider more than just a home’s appearance before submitting an offer.

One variable prospective home buy-ers tend to value more highly than oth-ers is the neighbourhood where they will ultimately choose to live. Many buy-ers even value neighbourhoods more than homes, feeling they can always fix a home but cannot necessarily fix an undesirable neighbourhood. When con-sidering which neighbourhood to begin a home search, buyers should research a host of factors.

Crime

Crime statistics are public domain, meaning buyers can examine crime fig-ures for any neighbourhood where they are considering buying a home. Some real estate websites list neighbourhood crime ratings among the information they offer about a given property. In addition, buyers interested in learning about crime in a given neighbourhood can visit different websites such as www.crimereports.com, or check in with local neighbhourhood watch groups to access data on crimes committed near a

particular address.

Home values

Home values are another factor to consider when choosing a neighbour-hood in which to buy a home. Buyers can work with a local realtor to find a neighbourhood or area where real es-tate prices are trending upwards. While buyers might be able to find a great deal on a home in a neighbourhood where home prices are dropping, it’s important to remember those home prices are dropping for a reason. Work with your realtor to find a neighbour-hood where you can afford a home and where property values are not in de-cline. Realtors will have access to recent sales figures so you can get an idea of whether a neighbourhood is trending upward or in decline.

The proximity of amenities such as shopping, restaurants and parks is at-tractive to many buyers, and that’s something all buyers should consider before buying a home. Even if you prefer a home in a remote location, that could limit your market of buyers when you want to sell the home down the road. While your own comfort and preferences

should ultimately prevail over potential resale value, it’s important that you at least consider access to amenities before making a decision. You might be able to find a compromise in a home that is a short drive away from a town centre, but still remote enough that you are not in the middle of the hustle and bustle.

Quality of life is heavily influenced by commute time. Many men and women feel their quality of life improves dramat-ically the shorter their daily commute is. When considering a particular neigh-bourhood, do a test run before making an offer on a home. Wake up early and drive to the area where you are think-ing of buying, and then commute from there during rush hour. Also, do the re-

verse commute come quitting time. You might be able to get an estimated com-mute time online, but a test run can give you a more accurate idea of what your daily trips to and from the office will be like.
