geospatial products for rf planning and optimization
TRANSCRIPT
Geospatial Products forRF Planning and Optimization Preferred global supplier to: - Wireless operators - Network equipment vendors - RF consultants and system integrators
In the past, operators have used 2D medium resolution data (20m+) to plan 2G and 3G networks. Recently, we’ve witnessed a dramatic increase in demand for our 2.5D Urban Planner and 3D City Planner products as operators deploy complex broadband and LTE networks – including those employing a heterogeneous strategy with small cells. Built-up urban areas provide the greatest RF challenges, and with the highest population concentration the largest payoff, to wireless operators. The need for proactive simulation-based RF planning and optimization using advanced 3D visualization capabilities in conjunction with specialized telecom geodata has never been greater.
Challenges Faced by Today’s Wireless Operators
LuxCarta focuses on the creation and delivery of geodata for the global telecom, navigation and other vertical markets. As experts in cartography and software development, we specialize in delivering quality fit-for-purpose products and services to non-specialist and expert end users. Our telecom offering includes the Planner geodata product line for RF planning and optimization, as well as SpacEyes3D visualization software and related services. Customers use our products in conjunction with their RF planning software through each stage of the network lifecycle.
Resolution, Scale & AccuracyGeodata is based on informationdigitized from maps and photos. The resolution of a data set is the pixel size of its raster elements. Geodata can be output at virtually any resolution, but unless the source imagery and related mapping data is at equal or higher resolution their accuracy is limited.

Accuracy is important! 1 dB of accuracy can represent ~10 per cent less sites in the RF design
Understanding the interference between indoor systems and the macro network requires a precise knowledge of building walls
Increasing amounts of high-resolution imagery (e.g., sub 0.5m) – a key input to the development of 3D models – are available today
RF planning tools are now able to process higher-resolution data given computer hardware and software improvements
Propagation models have become increasingly sophisticated to accurately model urban propagation phenomena
RF planning software are able to deliver 3D predictions, as are specialized viewing applications such as SpacEyes3D RF Vision
Increasing network densification: inter-site distances that were once 500m to 1 km are now as close as 200m
City Planner 3D data sets provide a very accurate model on which to perform RF planning and optimization, particularly in dense urban environments. Why is the market so interested in 3D data? There are a number of reasons:
Why 3D Geodata?
DTM – Better known by the acronym, digital terrain models (DTM) provide a 3D model of the surface of the Earth and are a core layer in all LuxCarta data sets
Orthoimage – A high-resolution image tied to the data set to simplify the use of the geodata compared to the real world
Clutter – LuxCarta offers a range of statistically categorized classes (e.g., forest, urban, etc.) that are useful for traffic planning and prediction model creation in RF planning tools
Vectors – These can represent a number of different elements including roads, rivers, coastlines, etc. and are fully geo-referenced
2.5D Clutter – A per-pixel representation of clutter height ranges
3D Buildings – Derived from stereo satellite and aerial imagery, these models provide orthorectified high-resolution accuracy and are the cornerstone of successful urban model development and related RF planning
LuxCarta products contain the following:Typical Geodata Layers
Minimum Mapping UnitThe minimum mapping unit is thesmallest area for which an individualclutter class will be represented in theclutter layer. For example, if the minimum mapping unit is 20m x 20m (400 square meters) a stand of trees measuring 100 square meters in area will not be represented in the clutter layer.
City Planner data sets at 1-5m resolution are a perfect input for advanced urban propagation models that generate RF predictions in the horizontal and vertical planes. This geodata delivers tremendous accuracy for modeling canyon effects, diffraction, reflection, etc. in small-cell planning of dense urban areas. LuxCarta has also introduced Urban Planner 2.5D data to offer higher-resolution 2D data with a clutter height layer that provides an important input for the propagation model. 2.5D data delivers a practical and cost-effective option for simulating “below-rooftop” small cells in urban, industrial and suburban morphologies.

Geodata Product Portfolio
SpacEyes3D RF Vision lets users visualize their network (e.g., sites and antennas) and their RF simulation (coverage maps, interference prediction, etc.) in 3D. It utilizes analyses generated by leading RF planning software to deliver stunning 3D representations of indoor/multi-floor predictions and network coverage. SpacEyes RF Vision lets engineers:
• Transform the 2D world of RF planning and optimization• Optimize key processes such as site selection, virtual site audits and
demonstration of nominal designs before implementation• Show multi-floor indoor coverage in a single view
Get more out of your 3D geodata purchase by adding SpacEyes’ impressive capabilities to your RF engineering team. SpacEyes3D RF Vision also enables network information to be easily accessible to users outside of the engineering group, including C-level decision makers, marketing, external parties in site acquisition, etc.
Visualizing your RF Analyses in 3D
LuxCarta understands the unique challenges that RF and performance engineers face as they plan and optimize their networks. Fundamentally, they require the most accurate representation of their network so that improvements achieved in simulation will be realized once implemented. Our 3D City Planner models provide the accuracy that engineers demand.
