Geothermal Energy
By Ryanand Harry
What is it?
Geothermal is a energy collecting method of taking heat from naturally hot underground areas and using it to heat homes or running reactors
While heating homes only require air ducts, 4 metres below ground, reactors require much hotter areas such as natural hot springs or hot rocks that can be filled with water
How Does it Work?
There are three ways to generate power but they all work on the same principle
Water enters the earth’s crust and turns into steam
Steam rises and is captured Steam is used to drive a turbine
creating power Steam condenses back into water
and returned to the earth
Uses
Aside from reactors and heating systems geothermal has other uses such as:
Growing plants Drying crops Fish farms Pasteurizing milk
Where
Geothermal energy sources are prevalent at natural hot springs and volcanic regions
Iceland, being a very volcanic region is heavily powered by geothermal energy
The United States is the world leader in geothermal, with the largest number of geothermal plants and heating systems
Dangers
The land powerplants are built on tend to be scenic.
Water and air pollution If geothermal energy becomes
advanced enough to cool the earth's core we would freeze to death (it's not going to happen)
Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia has no source strong enough to power plants, but heating
systems are becoming vary prevailent.
