from Requiem Mass

Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Ierusalem. Exaudi orationem meam; ad te omnis caro veniet.

Lux æterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in æternum, quia pius es. Requiem æternam dona eis, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Amen

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them . A hymn becomes you, O God, in Zion, and to you shall a vow be repaid in Jerusalem . Hear my prayer; to you shall all flesh come.

May everlasting light shine upon them, O Lord, with your Saints forever, for you are kind . Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may everlasting light shine upon them .

Dark Night of the SoulSt. John of the Cross (1542-1591)

1 . One dark night, fired with love’s urgent longings – ah, the sheer grace! – I went out unseen, my house being now all stilled .2 . In darkness, and secure, by the secret ladder, disguised, – ah, the sheer grace! – in darkness and concealment, my house being now all stilled .3 . On that glad night, in secret, for no one saw me, nor did I look at anything, with no other light or guide than the one that burned in my heart .

Requiem for PeaceFratres in Unum Psalm 133

Brothers in Unity

How pleasant it iswhen brothers live together in unityBehold, how good and honorable it iswhen brothers live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down upon the collar of his robes .It is like the dew of Hermon, which fallson Mount Zion .For there the Lord has bestowed His blessing, even life forevermore .

I Am a Man of Peace

I call on the Lord in my distress, and He answers meSave me, O Lord , from lying lipsand from deceitful tongues .What will he do to you,and what more besides, O deceitful tongue? He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrows, with burning coals of the broom tree .Woe to me that I dwell in Meshech, that I live among the tents of Kedar!Too long have I livedamong those who hate peace .I am a man of peace; but when I speak, they are for war .

Bugles Sang Wilfred Owen

Bugles sang, saddening the evening air;And bugles answered, sorrowful to hear .Voices of boys were by the river-side .Sleep mothered them; and left the twilight sad .The shadow of the morrow weighed on men .Voices of old despondency resigned,Bowed by the shadow of the morrow, slept

Wagons rattling and banging, horses neighing and snortingconscripts marching, each with bow & arrows at his hip, fathers and mothers, wives & children, running to see them off,so much dust kicked up you can’t see Xian-yang Bridge! And the families pulling at their clothes, stamping feet in anger, blocking the way and weeping, the sound of their wailing rises straight up to assault heaven .The frontier posts run with blood enough to fill an ocean, and the war-loving Emperor’s dreams of conquest have still not ended.Hasn’t he heard that in Han, east of the mountains, there are two hundred prefectures, thousands of villages, growing nothing but thorns? And even where there is a sturdy wife to handle hoe and plough, the poor crops grow raggedly in haphazard fields. It’s even worse for the men of Qin; they are such good fightersthey’re driven from battle to battle like dogs or chickens.Truly, it is an evil thing to bear a son these days,it is much better to have daughters;at least you can marry a daughter to the neighbour, but a son is born only to die, his body lost in the wild grass .Has my lord seen the shores of the Kokonor? The white bones lie there in drifts, uncollected .New ghosts complain and old ghosts weep, under the lowering sky their voices cry out in the rain .

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,And towards our distant rest began to trudge .Men marched asleep, many lost their boots,But limped on, blood-shod . All went lame, all blind;Drunk with fatigue;deaf even to the hoots of gas-shells dropping softly behind .Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! — An ecstasy of fumblingFitting the clumsy helmets just in time,But someone still was yelling out and stumblingAnd flound’ring like a man in fire or lime. —Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,As under a green sea, I saw him drowning .In all my dreams before my helpless sightHe plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning .If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace behindthe wagon that we flung him in,and watch the white eyes writhing in his face…My friend, you would not tell with such high zestTo children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie:Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori .

Program

Programme NotesTonight’s concert is about remem-bering those who have died through tragic circumstances . War is too often justified by a nation’s lead-ers as being a “just war .” However, throughout history millions of innocent people have suffered and died through no fault of their own through the military actions of a nation . These civilian casualties are too often written off as collateral damage in the pursuit of the “greater good” to be achieved through warfare . Much of the poetry set to music questions this premise and laments the unnecessary loss of life in tragic circumstances be they war or avoidable calamities .

On the hundredth anniversary of the sinking of Titanic, we also remember the deaths of many people who are the victims of negligence and the false security with which technological innova-tions beguile us . Of the 2224 people aboard Titanic, only 710 survived the sinking of that great wonder of maritime technology . Titanic, Olym-pic and Britannic, so-called Olympic class ocean liners, were built in Bel-fast . Titanic, the largest passenger ship ever to sail the Atlantic, sank near midnight south of Newfound-land on April 15, 1912, on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York . After a glancing collision with an iceberg ruptured five of the ship’s sixteen watertight compartments, water spilled from one compart-ment to another over a period of two hours and forty minutes as the ship was slowly flooded and sent to its watery grave .

Donald Patriquin’s Titanic Requiem is a memorial to those who died in this avoidable tragedy . (The captain of the Titanic had been warned of the danger of icebergs but still insisted on sailing at full speed .) It begins with the ominous drone of the ship’s motors, played by a sustained note on the contrabass,

and ends with the sound of seagulls crying as the ship sinks . A string quartet and piano continued to play on Titanic while it sank . In the last of five verses in Wolfgang Kater’s poem, the soprano soloist sings to us to heed the warnings of death and destruction if we put too great a trust in technological innovations .

After the music depicting the sinking of the Titanic, a simple performance piece titled Vous avez du Feu? (Do you have a light, or flame?), employing rhythmic sparks and flames from lighters, will be seen . It is a metaphor for the spirits of those who struggled for survival in the icy waters of the North Atlantic . Their inner flame flickered briefly before being extinguished . However, their memory in the aftermath of the disaster resulted in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea establishing maritime safety measures that are still in effect today.

Lux aeterna by Brian Schmidt has its source in the Mass for the Dead and is an invocation for eternal light to shine on those who have died . The poem Dark Night of the Soul by St . John of the Cross narrates the journey of the soul to its ultimate union with God . The first three verses of that poem, set to music by Ola Gjeilo, refer to the secret light that burns in our hearts guiding us on our spiritual journey through life’s difficult times.

Larry Nickel’s Requiem for Peace is a strong condemnation of the futility of wars throughout history and a plea for us to consider the consequences of the misery and death suffered by so many innocent people in war-torn countries . Nickel writes,

“Requiem for Peace honours the suffering civilians of this world who have been caught in the cross fire between warring nations, cir-cumstances they have little control over . Just as Wilfred Owen wrote so poignantly about man’s inhumanity to man, poets from every country have cried out the same sentiment . I have found myself in tears many times, while writing this music . Remembrance, regret, remorse, repentance, reconciliation, redemp-tion, renewal, requiem (rest); these are the themes that run through Requiem for Peace . It is a message of hope .”

Through his dramatic setting of poetry from a variety of languages and cultures, Nickel has given voice to the overwhelming grief caused by senseless conflicts inflicted on people throughout the world . In his music, Nickel incorporates stylistic influences as diverse as Gregorian chant, classical music, elements of Asian and Middle Eastern music, and jazz idioms . The traditional Latin liturgy provides continuity through-out the work .

The Guelph Chamber Choir was founded in 1980 to foster the development and appreciation of choral music in Guelph and the surrounding area . Consisting of highly-talented but largely amateur singers from a wide range

of occupations, the choir is proudly presenting its 33rd season this year with four concerts . Its repertoire ranges from Renaissance masters to newly commissioned works, from classical styles to Broadway and vocal jazz, and from masterworks for choir and orchestra to choral gems for unaccompanied voices .

Dr . Edmund Pries was born in Paraguay in 1958, the oldest of seven children born to Mennonite World War II refugees from Ukraine . He was a little over a year old when he and his parents moved to Win-nipeg, Manitoba, where he was raised .

Education was important and he completed a B .Th . and a B .A . before being ordained to the ministry in 1980 at the age of 21—the same year he was married and began as pastor of his first church . In the following years he alternated between continuing his education—completing an M .Div ., an M .A . and a Ph .D .—and pastoring churches, while also raising his three daughters .

After his Ph .D ., when suitable teaching positions were unavailable, Edmund started his own business and once it was successfully established, he returned to the university . Over the years, Dr . Pries has chaired the board of a university, taught at several others, and co-developed the business plan to create yet another (Laurier Brantford) .

Currently, Dr. Pries teaches Peace and Conflict Studies in the Department of Global Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University . In 2011 he was awarded the WLU Award for Teaching Excellence . He also serves as Conference Chair for the Peace and Justice Studies Association—the North American affiliate of the Interna-tional Peace Research Association .

He is married to Joan and they have three adult daughters and one son-in-law .
