Right: Here's a snapshot of the Yuba River taken on the February 15 Happy Wanderer's hike to Buttermilk Trail and Lake Englebright. The water level in the river was unusually low. The photo shows rocks on the far bank of the river that are usually covered by water. It looks as though we are headed for another drought year in California.

THE HAPPY WANDERERS March schedule
March the 1st ... SPENCEVILLE – Fairy Falls This beautiful 5 mile trail traverses the rolling terrain of the Sierra Foothills through an oak savannah woodland to a steep canyon in which Dry Creek tumbles over a basalt edge at Fairy Falls, where we stop for lunch. Due to the warm period we had, the wildflowers might be ready for us. We meet at “Park&Ride” at the intersection of Highway #20 and Pleasant Valley Rd. (Lake Wildwood turnoff) at 9:00 am.
March the 8th ... CULVERT TRAIL This trail is in the American River area on top of the ridge above the Confluence. It’s a fairly easy 5 mile hike on the sunny side of the river. We meet in Auburn at the Grocery Outlet at 9:00 am
March the 15th ... BULLARD’S BAR We will be hiking along the edge of Bullard’s Bar Lake beneath the canopy of large trees. We plan on having lunch on a peninsula This hike is considered ‘moderate' – 5.5 miles long We meet at the Government Center in N.C. at 9:00 am
March the 22nd ... QUARRY TRAIL We start hiking along the American River; then up the hill around the quarry - crossing #49 and then back down to the highway, close to where our cars are parked. This hike is app. 5 miles. In order to save the $10.- parking fee, we park uphill along #49 We meet in Auburn at the Grocery Outlet at 9:00 March the 29th ... OPEN
If you are not a regular hiker with the group, and would like to hike with us, call Fred 346-7392 first, since the hike might have changed for various reasons.

We're happy to report that no harm was done at the February meeting, when our illustrious Activities Director, John Hettrich, set fire to a block of sugar cubes saturated with heated, high proof rum, as part of making Glühwein. That's John's wife, Renate, standing by to offer encouragement and emotional support. John is wearing a heatproof glove, and Renate is wearing what appears in this photo to be a welder's protective mask with respirator, but that's actually a Fasching mask with a big nose. Nicely done, Hettrichs! The Glühwein turned out great!

In the years immediately following both world wars, the terms of the victors prohibited German manufacturers from building any products that could be used to wage war. This restriction included not only firearms, tanks, and artillery, but also any aircraft with military potential. Against this restrictive backdrop emerged a new (or renewed) German industry: Sailplanes -- gliders! Instead of using motors and propellors to take off, sailplanes are launched from the ground with long winches, or towed into the air by conventional airplanes. They gain altitude by catching thermal updrafts in the air. Their air speeds are typically 60 to 90 mph. about the same as cars on the Autobahn, hardly fast enough to outrun conventional military fighter aircraft; and, they're too light to carry bombs or munitions. QED, negligible military potential. The German sailplane makers set out to produce the very best quality sailplanes possible, satisfying many design criteria: Maximizing glide ratio, reducing drag by streamlining; avionics and controls, aesthetics, carrying capacity, resistance to sun damage, human engineering, and value. Compared to motorized aircraft, sailplanes are eerily quiet. The wings are often removable so the aircraft can be trailered. Among many German sailplane makers is DG Flugzeugbau. One of their models is shown, soaring above the clouds!
