MESSAGE FROM THE SKILLS ACADEMY MANAGER
Dear Prospective Learners
In order to meet the critical needs of the country for economic growth and social development, the vision of the Skills Academy Centre is to offer high quality Occupational and Professional training programmes for both young people and adults.
The centre with its various offerings does not only intend to respond to the demands of the 21st century employers seeking a work force with specialised skills, but also to reach into the deep rural areas like Elukwatini and Tjakastad in the Mpumalanga Province to offer skills training to the unemployed. Programmes identified by the various Sectoral Education and Training Authorities and registered by the South African Qualification Authority are utilised to train learners to gain a qualification. A certificate will be issued by the relevant Sectoral Education and Training Authority when the requirements of the qualification or the skills programme have been successfully completed by the learner.
These programmes are either funded by the National Skills Fund, or one of the various Sectoral Education and Training Authorities or the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport running programmes such as Extended Public Works Programme and National Youth Service and the Department of Rural Development running a programme called National Rural Youth Service Corpse. Recruitment for these programmes is mostly done by the various Departments, Local Municipalities, Department of Labour and Employers.

Dear Prospective Student,
The prominence of FET Colleges has risen drastically over the recent past. FET Colleges are now seen as institutions of choice for vocational and occupational training. Colleges have been placed at the centre of the skills development agenda of the country and are regarded as key role players in addressing unemployment, poverty and inequality.
MESSAGE FROM THE COLLEGE COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON
AND CEO TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
Gert Sibande College has become renowned as a centre of excellence and is regularly placed amongst the top performing colleges in the country. Innovative use of technology, strong student support services, high academic standards and well-resourced facilities are some of the factors that enable the college to excel.
The college developed a Skills Academy and Artisan Development Centre to complement the NC(V) and Nated programmes offered by the college on behalf of the Department of Higher Education and Training. The Skills programmes offered by Skills Academy respond directly to the skills shortages of South Africa in general and Gert Sibande Region in particular. The college provides most of the programmes in partnership with other government organisations such as the National Skills Fund or one of the various Sectoral Education and Training Authorities. These programmes are offered by highly competent and dedicated staff members in modern infrastructure and an environment that is conducive to success. The primary objective of the Skills Academy is to provide occupational skills to students that will enhance their opportunities to become employed or start their own entrepreneurial ventures. Consequently priority is given to preparing students for the workplace with a strong emphasis on practical training.
Gert Sibande College promises to help you realise your full potential by providing you with high quality vocational and occupational training that will adequately prepare you to enter the world of work.
ARTISAN DEVELOPMENT
A unique model for Artisan Training has been developed by the college to enable a learner to qualify as an artisan. Three aspects need to be fulfilled:Theoretical training provided by the College, off-the-job training provided by the College or a private provider and on-the-job training provided by the Employer.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGAMMES
As part of community development programmes unemployed youth is equipped with a specific skill, for example paving, and then utilised for projects at various sites of the College. Using this model trainees are granted the opportunity to refine skills to such an extent that they can contribute to the economy either through permanent employment or self employment.

The Skills Academy, known as the “skills wing” of Gert Sibande FET College was launched on 14 May 2010. The initial number of 175 learners registered at the Skills Academy has since grown to over 2 800 learners and it is anticipated that these numbers will carry on increasing due to the quality and responsiveness of the programmes offered. The centre focuses on Artisan Training, Learnerships and short skills courses. The area is conducive for training. It comprises of 22 000 square metres under roof, 14 hectares of land and various state-of-the-art workshops for conducting “off-the-job” training.
Sleeping facilities are available to trainees enrolled for long-term training programmes in order to accommodate them for the full duration of the training programme.
Learnership training completed at the Skills Academy and Artisan Development Centre indicates to employers that 60 - 70% of the training is completed at a suitable workplace, adequately preparing the learner for the work place environment.
