NEXT WEEKEND’S MASS SCHEDULE SUNDAY SALESIAN PERSPECTIVE
Today, Jesus is telling us that a personal, intimate relationship with him is essential if we are to bear fruit as his disciples.
As branches need a vine in order to bear fruit, we need Jesus. Jesus is very clear: “Without me, you can do nothing.” The opposite is also true: with Jesus, we can do everything. Jesus reveals his great desire for us: “Remain in me, as I remain in you.” Our efforts to remain in Jesus each day give glory to our Father.
One of the ways we remain in Jesus as he remains in us is that we love in our deeds, and not merely talk about loving. St. Francis de Sales offers us some practical advice about how to do this each day. He encourages us to begin our day by being conscious of God’s presence and love:
My God, I know that you are here with me. You are loving me today. Help me to be conscious you are with me in everything I say and do today.
Then, as we begin each new activity of our day, he encourages us to be conscious again of God’s presence and ask for the help of his grace so that we might do this activity in a way that is pleasing to God.
All of the activities of our day are part of God’s plan for our salvation. God graces them, making them holy activities, no matter how ordinary they may seem to us. Eating a meal, shopping for food, listening in class, working at a job, meeting with friends, washing clothes and pots and pans – each of these activities can be holy when I choose to do them as God’s will for me right now, and I ask God for the grace to do them in a loving way.
When we make this short prayer at the beginning of each of our activities and trust in God’s presence and love with us, we are better able to accept any difficulties we may meet in an activity and possibly see them as God’s way of pruning us so that we can bear more fruit.
De Sales’ advice helps us to remember that we are branches on Jesus, the vine, as we go about the tasks of daily living. It also helps us to do our actions and speak our words in a way that is loving.
Let us pray that his advice may help each of us to deepen our friendship with Jesus and to love one another more as Jesus has loved us.

Chapter 2 of Pope Francis’ third apostolic exhortation, Gaudete et Exultate, tackles two central challenges to holiness: contemporary gnosticism and contemporary pelagianism. Pope Francis describes the modern gnostics as people who think that their expla-nations can make the entirety of the faith and the Gospel perfectly comprehensible. They absolutize their own theories and reduce Jesus’ teaching to a cold and harsh logic that seeks to dominate everything. The pope goes on to warn believers to avoid these people: “When somebody has an answer for every question, it is a sign that they are not on the right road." “Even when someone’s life appears completely wrecked, even when we see it devastated by vices or addictions, God is present there”. St. Francis de Sales’ had an utter optimism in the power of God's love. DeSales believed that the goodness of the person is larger and stronger than any capacity for sin. Thus, his ever-simple Direction of Intention prayer brings each of the believer’s actions, no matter how small or significant, into the presence of divine love. The second threat to holiness is pelagianism, which is the tendency for one to “ultimately trust only in their own powers and feel superior to others'". Here, Pope Francis discusses the many limitations of shortcomings that every person possess-es, even himself. These shortcomings, he teaches, are opportunities to experience the grace of God that can advance us in holiness—charity—as we experience the same grace that God gives to those in our lives whom we may judge, dismiss, disrespect, or dislike. Indeed, all are part of the same human family, blessed and redeemed by Jesus." Pelagianism, deprives the Gospel of its simplicity, allure and beauty. Pope Francis has elsewhere frequently spoken against rigidity and legalism. DeSales’ repeated calls to be gentle and patient with others and especially our-selves directly counter such narrow and corrosive tendencies. In The Introduction to the Devout Life, DeSales reminds the reader that, after sin, anxiety is the greatest challenge for the soul. With a foreshadowing eye on the anxieties that the pope outlines here, DeSales' advice is spot-on.

Thir-teen is President Ann's lucky number. It is the number of years she has headed the 50+ Club. Lucky for all who have seen this vibrant group grow in the Gesu community.

A Sesquicentennial Concert
Sister Krista Benda, SND, is on Sunday, May 6, at 2 pm
at Immaculate Conception Parish (434 Western Avenue).
The Season of the Immaculate will be performed on the
piano and the majestic 1927 Kilgen Organ. This concert
is free, but an offering will be taken to support scholar-
ships to Queen of Apostles School. Mark your calendars!
Our RCIA topic for this Monday is Catholic Social Justice Teaching.
We will discuss our participation as members of the human family. By na-
ture, we are social beings and develop our potential as persons by service of others. In
fact, loving human relationships mirror the life of the Trinity - a community of Persons
bound in love. Our vocation as individuals and as a human community is to be in love.
Our vocations as individuals and as a human community is to be transformed into the
Lord’s image, and to attain the happiness of union with God in eternity. We achieve
this when we love God above all and love our neighbor as our self. Thus, we have to
relate to others to achieve our eternal destiny.
We will, also discuss the central themes of Catholic Social Justice Teaching. They
are: the dignity of the individual person, the essential equality among humans, the link
between justice and love, political and economic rights, stewardship, economic justice,
human solidarity, preferential option for the poor and the promotion of peace.
As you can see this is another huge topic and we can only touch on it importance.
We meet on Mondays at 6:30 in the “Rainbow” room in the basement of the rectory.
