In John, Chapter 18, Judas

betrays Jesus. How could this

happen? Judas walked with Jesus

for 3 years. Judas saw all the mir-

acles.

Judas heard Jesus’ teach-

ings. Judas ate with Jesus. Judas

lived with Jesus. How could he

not believe in Jesus? It still hap-

pens today. People know about

Jesus. They here His name. They

hear the testimonies of His believ-

ers. They see miracles. They

here of the grace and mercy and

love of Jesus. But they still don’t

believe.

In Chapter 18, Judas comes

with a group of men carrying

weapons to seize Jesus. Jesus

asks who they are looking for and

they tell Him they are looking for

Him. Jesus acknowledges that He

is the One they are looking for.

Peter takes out his sword and cuts

one of their ears off. Don’t you

love Peter. He doesn’t always do

the right thing for say the right

thing, but he’s always going to do

or say something.

Jesus tells Peter and the oth-

ers to put away their weapons, and

He heals the man’s ear. Do you

ever think about this soldier? He

was nearly killed with Peter’s

sword. He loses his ear (tem-

porarily). And then Jesus heals his

ear. Do you think he believed?

The group of men take Jesus

before the priests to be tried and

they question Him. Jesus answers

by telling his accusers to talk to the

ones He preached to—Jesus says

ask them who I am and what I

said. It is at this time that Peter

denies Jesus. Again, it’s easy to

love Peter because I think we see

a lot of us in him—we see our

humanity, our flaws, our weakness-

es. We relate to Peter. .

The group of men then take

Jesus before Pilate. Pilate sees

no fault in Jesus—because there is

no fault in Jesus—and Pilate offers

to release Him. But the crowd

insists that Pilate release Barabbas

and crucify Jesus.s.

This is a story we are all famil-

iar with. It is a story full of plots

and twists. There is Jesus—the

perfect Son of God—willingly giv-

ing His life up for all of humanity.

He could have called 10,000

angels to destroy the world and set

Himself free. But He chose to

humbly sacrifice His life for all of

us—for you and for me. There is

Judas—the betrayer. No one

could have been closer to Jesus

than the 12 disciples. Eleven of

the disciples believed and they

changed the world. One disciple

did not believe and he lost his

soul. There is the Roman soldier

with the ear injury. Did he believe

after Jesus healed him? There is

Peter—you have to love Peter.

Peter is one of Jesus’ greatest fol-

lowers, yet he denied even know-

ing Jesus in His most difficult hour.

There are the priests and Pilate.

They had the opportunity to free

Jesus, but they chose to condemn

Him to death—even death on a

cross.

The story doesn’t end here,

however. There is one more group

of people in the story. This group

of people includes all those who

would come after Jesus. This

group of people includes you and

me. What does this group of peo-

ple do with Jesus. What do you do

with Jesus? What do I do with

Jesus? Do we accept Him or

reject Him? Do we deny Him or do

we proclaim Him to the world? Do

we betray Him or befriend Him?

Do we set Him free or do we cruci-

fy Him? We must choose wisely.

Most do not choose wisely.

We must choose Jesus as our

Lord and Savior. We must accept

Him. We must proclaim Him to the

world. We must befriend Him. We

must set Him free. We must each

choose today. As for me and my

house, we will serve the Lord..
