Closing date: 20 March 2014 On the last day of NUMSA’s bargaining conference in Pretoria on Wednesday 12 March 2014, deputy secretary general Karl Cloete said the union would be demanding a double-digit wage increase for its members, who are subjected to the high cost of living and a heavy social economic burden. Cloete referred to deepening poverty and widening inequalities while unemployment is increasing, saying unemployment among Africans have grown from 40% in 2008 to 46% in 2012. He said NUMSA had to recruit the 71% of workers who do not belong to any union, 54% of whom never receive increases at work. Union president Andrew Chirwa said nothing had changed since 1994, and that the country’s poor are worse off than ten years ago. He called the past twenty years “a fairy tale”, saying that while the freedom struggle got rid of apartheid, capitalism remained and white capital had been replaced by black capital. He said the working class was under siege. Chirwa also said while the ANC government were dishing out grants, the unemployed wanted proper jobs, equity and a living wage. The trouble at home started after COSATU’s suspension of its general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, who NUMSA wants reinstated. NUMSA is a founding member of COSATU, but has called on CO- SATU to pull out of its alliance with the ANC and the SA Communist Party. The union’s demands will be handed to the employer next week and negotiations are expected to start in April. The double- digit increase over a year, inclusive of the consumer price index, in- cludes paid time off for shop stewards, free solar geysers for Eskom employees, and allowances for shifts, service, housing, transport and tools. The union plans on embarking on a protected strike on 19 March, demanding jobs for the young. “This is the first of a series of rolling socio-economic strikes that the union decided on at its special na- tional congress in December 2013,” Chirwa said.
