Running Start AT HIGHLINE COLLEGE
Guide for Prospective High School Students
Running Start is a dual credit program for high school juniors and seniors to enroll in college-level classes tuition-free. Students can earn college credits that count toward both a high school diploma and college degree. With careful planning, students may even earn an associate degree or certificate by graduation. Students can choose to take classes in preparation for university transfer or a career in a high demand field. BENEFITS*
n Save money on your college education—tuition for up to 15 college-level credits per quarter is covered by the state
n Students can participate in Running Start fall, winter, and spring quarters; up to six quarters for students who begin their junior year
n Get a “Running Start” by earning an associate degree, transferring your credits to a 4-year university, or preparing for a hands-on career through Career Start
n Challenge yourself academically by taking rigorous college classes from a variety of subjects with students of all ages and backgrounds
n Flexibility to enroll part-time or full-time and take morning, afternoon, evening, or online classes
n Meet with a Running Start Advisor who can help you plan your classes based on your high school graduation requirements and your future goals
n Get involved with Highline’s diverse campus community by participating in events, activities, and clubs
n Access free campus resources and programs such as tutoring, counseling, honors, cultural learning communities, and more!
CONSIDERATIONS*
n There are costs to participate—students pay for fees, textbooks, supplies, transportation, and additional tuition costs (Fee Waiver and Textbook Assistance is available for qualifying students)
n Parents and families have limited access to student records in college (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)
n Students should continue to work closely with their high school counselor on meeting high school graduation
n Students are responsible for class registration, space in preferred classes is not guaranteed
n College classes are taught at a faster pace than high school classes
n The college academic calendar and class schedule may differ from the high school. Students are responsible for knowing important dates/deadlines and to plan their schedule accordingly
*Students and families are encouraged to attend a Running Start Informational Session or contact the Running Start office to learn more about the benefits and considerations of Running Start at Highline College.

ELIGIBILITYn Be enrolled in a Washington State public high school (home schooled and private school
students should contact their local public high school/district for enrollment procedures)
n Be a high school junior or senior (determined by your high school/district)
n Placement into college-level English
